Turning my home disc golf course into a permaculture food forests disc golf course! If permaculture didn't have enough to consider... I have to consider the disc flight lines and position plants so they are protected from being hit by a disc as well! lol

Great video! We are currently looking at buying land when we move across the country so I may be coming back and revisiting your videos for how to best use that land.
Really excited for you! Good luck with your search. I only covered general ideas, so will be making more detailed videos for sure. One thing I encourage you to look at is the orientation of the land if it's in hilly areas and you experience winters. You don't want a hill facing North in the Northern hemisphere or facing South in the Southern Hemisphere as the sun is low in the sky in winter and the hills facing these directions will get limited sunshine, so it will be colder there in winter. For me that's the main thing I would look at. If you can get a flat land that's great but a combination of a gentle hill and a flatter land present massive opportunities for harvesting and distributing rainwater across the property in a cost efficient manner.

What is your approach for permaculture in wet climates? I'm in Ireland and it's getting wetter every year. I am on a slope and have 4 springs on a 1 hectare site. I was going to divert it to ponds. And place my veg beds and tree crops 90° on contour.... what do you think? I have clay soils with 5.5 - 6pH
Thanks for the comment! Wow! 4 springs! I’d divert the water to ponds too! And keep fish, lots of fish! Check out the chinampa growing system and its variations.
I’d plant the trees and place garden beds along the contour lines to reduce the erosion. I’d explore native water loving plants as well as those from around the world of the same hardiness zone as yours. Perhaps you could grow something that is demanded but not popular to grow in the area.
Some plants love acid soils, but most will thrive in more neutral pH above 6 below 7. To raise the pH you’ll need lime. If the roots can’t grow well because the clay soil is too heavy, adding organic matter will help, but you can also sprinkle some gypsum, but not too much.

Typically, there are setback requirements that dictate how far structures must be from property lines, other structures, and sometimes natural features like bodies of water. To get accurate information for your specific location, you should contact your local municipality's planning or building department. They can provide you with the specific setback requirements and any other regulations you need to consider when planning the construction of your cottage. Failing to adhere to these regulations could result in additional costs or complications during the building process. If you meant something else in your question, please provide more details so I can offer more targeted assistance.
Super interesting. There is one thing that I miss in your videos, but that is because I am new in this and quite ignorant. This is the distance between trees or in guilds, or one guild from another. Could you help to give me an aprox idea?
Hi Isabel. Thank you so much for watching and leaving the comments. I'd start by finding general plant information. For example, a tree nursery might tell you the maximum width of your chosen mature tree. Or you can find that information online. So, you consider this when positioning trees and other plants around them. To give you a general idea: Standard fruit trees need 5-7 meters space as a minimum. Whilst semi-dwarf verities need 3.5 to 4.5 meters per tree as a minimum. Dwarf fruit trees need about 2.5-3 meters each as a minimum. The guilds can intersect with one another but the each plant space needs to be considered. It's also necessary to consider sun angles and how positioning different trees west to east or north to south would affect one another. Would they give too much shade to trees behind them and is it desirable or not. I hope this helps.

Do you have any permaculture design suggestions for a monsoon tropical northern slope land? I live in India - Maharashtra.

Hi! Thank you for the comment. I’d need more information to provide a specific guidance but here are some takeaways: You have a distinct wet and dry season. Water should be harvested and stored for use in the dry season. The plants themselves hold 80-90% of the nutrients not the soil, and there is a rapid decomposition process because of high temperature, rainfall and humidity. So to maintain soil fertility you’ll need living mulches in wet season and dry mulches in the dry season. To rehabilitate the land, you’ll need leguminous cover crops and trees. The legume trees can be coppiced for nutrient cycling and mulch. The land will need careful selection of plants as there is water competition in dry season. If you have animals, they should be grazed only under selected tree crops and they need to be rigorously rotated between fields. Food forest should have a complex understory system. Crops should be rotated according to seasons. Grains and pulses in the dry season, rice paddies, taro etc. in wet season. There would be also some unique design elements according to the specific shape of your land, soil type and energy inputs.
