    About:
Jason and Lorraine. In 2016 we sold most of our belongings and left the city in southern California to start a small homestead in the mountains of North Carolina. We left the city in search for a more minimal and intentional life. We became passionate about growing our own food and knowing what exactly is in our food after I (Jason) became diagnosed with cancer. Now 8 years in remission we as a family are on a journey to live our passions.
We document our life on TH-cam videos to inspire others to get out of their comfort zone and not be afraid of change. We started our own online general store where we have available the things we make and use in real life. Thank you for following us on this incredible life changing journey!

fireflies are a special evening gift! We were drinking out coffee early one morning...about 5:15 (we just woke up, no reason for that early!) and there were still 1 or 2 blinking around the yard. Just special.

Here’s a very old fruit tree trick to get rid if bugs. Around early October cover the trunks with cardboard so the bugs will lay the eggs there. In November burn the cardboards and repeat the cardboard protection for the cold season. The following summer you will have very few bugs.

Because of the gravity in the rain barrels, you can add a hose and spray nozzle and not walk back and forth with a bucket.... Just saying.

The garden really looks good. Nice with the new wood chips squaring up the garden. Agree with commenter suggestions for hooking a hose andbspray nozzle to the rain barrels to save you steps. Owl is checking out your flock-scary.
I hope you’re mother really enjoys her visit and extra snuggle time with Penelope.

If walking is a priority, you might consider using a garden hose as a pipe connecting multiple water jugs. I mean, wouldn't it be nice to be able to just get the water from all the water jugs using only a single jug? Sure, there will be some water you cannot use, because it's in the garden hoses, but realistically it won't be much, considering you will have multiple jugs to fill.
Also, you could even half-bury the hoses, to not be a tripping hazzard. If you want to use rainwater inside the house (i.e. toilet sink, maybe also shower), you could have a mini water-tower outside the house, harvesting rainwater into a few interconnected barrels. You could even have shaded area for cold water and a mini greenhouse for for the hot/warm water, with tinfoil or metal sheet or even whitewash (or white/bright paint) on the inside of the walls, to reflect more light onto the heated water jugs.

I always throw a small amount of grain at the opposite end f the tractor to distract the birds to the back. Prevents any running out and allowing some walking room. Just a thought, love the channel!

Could you add wheels to your chicken tractor? Placing the wheels on a cam and then adding a lever arm to move the cam wheel into position. It may help your wife move the tractor if you are out of town, on a quick job, or down for whatever reason.

Looks like cedar rust on the apples. I planted some apple trees 3 years ago and noticed rust as soon as they developed leaves. Yeah be found some fungal spray that prevents it if I spray biweekly during the early spring when buds start growing. Not organic but the leaves are green this year 🤷‍♂️

Did your greenhouse bucket overflow? It’s amazing how much rain you can gather. Maybe you could flag the wild berry bushes and move them in the fall so you can pick them easier. Your homestead is beautiful!! Such a precious family! Don’t forget to feed your heavy feeder plants like tomatoes etc every week to two weeks to get the most out of your plants. I had to put it as a reminder on my phone. I bet the owls are checking out your flock.

Hopefully the young one gets interested in filming, for I'm seeing TH-cam, with its common people teaching common people, as a center-point for teaching the world to pick up the pieces and start again . . . but in a sustainable way for everyone this next time. . ..

@@SowtheLand You're so welcome, and thank you so much for showing me, showing everyone, there are life-staining ways to live with nature and not against it. Living 'with' nature is one of the reasons why we humans evolved, so my guess is that we should keep doing it, for to do the alternative is to . . . not do anything anymore ever again, everyone everywhere. . ..

Yay for apples!!!!! Quick question, when you do a rain barrel on the other building if you set it up on a platform like the one on the greenhouse could you hook a water hose up to the spigot and let gravity do the work of getting the water where you need it? I've never worked with a rain barrel myself bu I'd like to so I'm curious what options there are. Good shot of the lady bug and the garden looks awesome!

  • @gianetta4195

You probably already know this tip, but my friend uses fixed copper spray on his apple trees when they are dormant and it seems to help to cut down on those spots on the leaves. He'll also sometimes has actually used a hand held hole punch like what you would get at Staples on young trees that are just starting out to punch the brown spots out so they won't spread, but that's a very tedious task I'm sure.
