Performance ROBBING INTAKES! High Flow Hot Air Filters & MELTING Front Struts! 2010 Chevy Tahoe 5.3

  • During Inspection we found the the front struts and bump stops were worn and deteriorating. Ride quality was surely suffering. Due to the age and mileage, it was best to replace the MacPherson strut assembly rather than piecing the units together. The customer states to install a custom high flow air intake system on the 5.3 powerplant to unlock a throaty intake sound by removing the intake baffle that came with the stock intake plumbing. We talk about the benefits and drawback of installing such intakes. Check out the Banks Performance link below to shop for premium level performance parts for your vehicle. Unlike the cheap knockoff units, the Banks Power products are designed with vehicle specific engineering and are made with the highest quality materials.

    That intake sucks for 3 reasons.
    1, You're correct. it will suck in hot air instead of cold.
    2. It is smaller in diameter than the original (hence, the reducer adaptor) and won't flow as much total air but the owner will THINK it has more power because the air velocity will be higher so the computer will richen the mixture (not always a good thing to do). What is the before and after diameters where the sensor is mounted?
    3. It is metal instead of plastic so it will absorb the heat (heat the air even more) especially after hot soaking.

    • @ChristianBelotti
      @ChristianBelotti 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Mhhh some cold intake is ok but need to be specific design for the car and only the intake make no difference at all, you need as well a tuning map to recalibrate sensor end engine to the new air quantity end depend of the type of the car maybe a new intercooler if is a turbo engine ecc.. but people don’t know and just buy cheap part only for the sound 😢

      Doesn’t really change that much on a non high performance car for a high performance car it’s better but since the changes for a non performance car are so negligible it doesn’t really matter as much as people say it’s a vast over reaction by people who don’t really know much and just go off videos

    Way back around 2001, when I was still in the Navy, There was a guy at one of the Auto Hobby Shops on base trying to remove his struts only he was trying to remove the center nut. I stopped him just a few threads before launch and showed him the correct way to remove them. The shop was fairly crowded that day and he could have really hurt himself and a bunch of others had I not stopped him. I give him credit for trying to do it himself and save some money but if you're not sure how to do it safely and correctly just ask questions... After that incident if we were in the shop at the same time he would come over and say hi and he always had questions. I didn't mind giving him pointers but left him to do the work. We became friends after the strut ordeal.

    the factory air intake system has those resonators (what you call mufflers) to smooth out the fluctuations in the air stream, getting rid of them may well decrease horsepower, but will increase noise, but that may well be why the owner wants it.

  • @StevenDaugherty-uo5cs
    @StevenDaugherty-uo5cs 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Most of those after market intakes are all about looks and sound. Very few are actually properly engineered to increase performance. For this one to function as a cold air intake it would need to be extended either into the fender well or grill.. As you found out they're also designed rather generically to fit several car models and therefore don't really fit any of them without some minor modification. On the other hand, the struts fit like a glove.

    I totally agree! Most cold air intakes are hot air intakes! A basic scanner will show you the intake temperatures before and after! And you can feel the less HP with the hot engine bay. I don’t know how they can advertise coke air part when the intake temp sensor will instantly tell you it’s worse! My best mod/repair was to customize my KN Intake…. I made my own lid for it as well as a fender trim so it sealed to the original cold air intake part! My temps dropped 30 degrees instantly with that new sealed encloser! You can feel that difference so easily on a hot summer day! That’s why real good intake kits have an enclosed box! Like volant. Basically if the top is open then it’s junk…. Might as well buy a cheap intake.

    I installed an SB cold air intake on my 2013 Ram Hemi in 2015. Still works awesome!
    It is totally sealed from the engine bay in a sealed hard plastic housing.
    It also has a second air intake that extends down to an area behind the bumper. Care has to be taken in water more than two ft deep. It brings in more air volume.
    I also installed a 48mm throttle body. Up from the stock 46mm. Looking to go to 52mm and an aftermarket exhaust and shorty headers just for laughs.
    This solution has a license approving it for smog testing. Hasn’t set off any lights nor failed smog tests.

    Is this same company as the van you did last time? It's cool you actually get to work on whole "fleet" for one customer. That's some of recognition for your work

    Hope this helps. Having spoken to those who know. Start by fitting the heat shield , and rubber top seal,, then the filter. Next
    the KEY is to ,if required, cut the red pipe to length, then connect to throttle body.😊 stay well stay safe Thank as always for your videos

    Mom's old car had adjustable struts where you could press a button for either standard ride or firm ride. Those required 4 since they were all electronic. The mechanic wanted 800.00 each for them. Mom opted to bypass the system with standard struts.

    Suggestion from an old-timer ;-). Get yourself a set of hand held nut drivers for hose clamps instead of screwdrivers. They are awesome. You can actually ‘grab’ the bolt portion of the clamp and move it at the same time as tightening it. Trust me….you’ll never use screwdrivers again!

    Had wife's Yaris fixed, exhaust leaking (not rust) and the air wasn't as cold as it used to be, called local mechanic, he came, did a quick test drive to confirm issues, then took the car to his shop. Today he delivered the car back, exhaust fixed, aircon recharged and cold. Total cost $35. Very impressed.

      Pretty cool. I wonder where he gets his refrigerant from to only have to charge thirty five dollars for the whole job , including ac recharge, pick up and delivery and still make a profit.

    • @TheStuffMade
      @TheStuffMade 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@stevewhite3424 The exhaust was probably just a clamp that needed tightening. Not sure how he did the aircon so cheap, it looks like he replaced one of the valve cores as well. It's possible he did it at cost to try ensure future business. Must have taken at least 1 hour of his time including pick up and delivery. Anyway, if he is looking for repeat business and some PR then it's working because I'll likely use him again when it's time for new tires, brake pads and oil change.

      Does he work out of a garage on his house ? That price is way low. He had to have lost money or possibly broke even. Maybe he had down time and was bored. Just seems way to cheap.

      @@johnhooton3286 He's got a shop about the same size as Ray's with 2 lifts and a couple of guys working with him and yes it's next to his house. We do live in a rural area close to a small town, that probably helps.
