Please, no mind-numbing Bob Ross background music. Your genuine insights and process details are far more interesting to listen to than cheesy bg music.
I just put together why I like these videos so much. As a 13 year old in 1968 I started hanging out at my neighbors race shop. He was a Plymouth factory drag racer and I became the shop gofer until 1972. I loved staying out of the way while watching the mechanics work on those beasts for hours on end. When I was 14 he started sneaking me into the drag racing pits in New Jersey where you had to be16 but I could pass with my brother’s drivers license. There was nothing like the sound of Super Stock and Pro Stock Hemi’s shaking the ground under your feet, and I got to watch the legends of drag racing run during the golden age of factory drag racing. An amazing time and the start of my racing career at the ripe old age of 13.
Another great story of a kid getting involved through a race shop. The number of kids brought up around guys who loved their work who worked hard to achieve success. I'm one of those guys also but the race shop I hung out in raced sprint cars.
You should have gone 100% Bob Ross on this one. The calm piano in the background, the soft whispers, you should have called it a Happy little gasket. Then described how it doesn’t like being alone so you add a happy dot of sealant.
I enjoyed the background music. Didn't realize what was different then realized it was the relaxing, almost subliminal music. Helped me concentrate on your presentation and kept the days events at bay. Thanks for sharing.
There are a lot of comments about the piano music but, would you believe me when I say I was paying so much attention to the work being done, I never heard it. Ray throwing the empty canister of brake clean and Dave hiding behind the pilar had me in stitches.😂
Oh man! GM’s best motor ever! The venerable 3.8! I had a few Buicks that had this motor, and loved them! One was a wonderful Regal with the M90 supercharger! Man that big brick moved! I always wanted to stick one of those superchargers on a 3.8 Camaro or Firebird. It’s a cheap junkyard pull, and with the right parts, 500 hp is easily achievable! Nice work, and nice video! Though the music was a bit odd…
I absolutely enjoy watching your videos! I imagine that TH-cam decided the music in the background from your radio was a copyright infringement but please do not replace it with massage therapy music! Your videos are far too enjoyable for you to have to employ that music!
The valve cover gasket sequence reminded me of the old claymation stop-motions shows like Wallace and Grommit, Davey and Goliath, and the Rankin-Bass holiday movies. edit: Fun nostalgia blast!
Thumbs up for the background piano music. Soothing and hides noises in the shop that would otherwise distract from what you are doing. Thanks for another good informative video.
You my friend can think outside the box. So very many people and techs that I have come across over the very many years just cannot do this. Just has to be the book or nothing, or in their closed minds they are scared to take a short cut that's perfectly acceptable. You have a lot going for you, your chosen talent, your own shop and have a ton of experience and most of all an honest approach to your work. So continue to ignore all the nay Sayers and and the itty bitty nit pickers. Most of us that follow you around the world are either mechanics coming up on the trade, old techs such as myself, weekend or backyard mechanics and just people that love you for your personality and the way you make a simple job shine. I think I speak for most of us here on your channel, please, keep up the good work and you, have a great day!
Long, long ago, in another life, I worked at my dad's accounting firm and he required us to wear a tie. Couldn't understand why because there were never any clients in the office with us. However comma we'd have clients in the office on Saturdays during tax season. And we were not required to wear a tie. 🤪 I didn't last very long in my little office. Ended up in the gas fields out west working on gas turbines. No ties required. Just Nomex coveralls, steel toes boots, hard hat and safety glasses. Much better than a tie.
As a former original owner of both a '97 WS6 Trans Am and a '99 Formula, I know what one's lower back feels like after working under the hood of these 4th-gen F-Bodies -- much respect to you Ray for undertaking the deep dive on this V6 iteration to keep these Ponchos on the road (I rarely see one anymore here in SoCal). Thanks too for using fender covers to keep that Navy Blue Metallic paint looking its best! P.S. Congrats on having a functional parts washer once again, and your choice of suitable blood pressure lowering meditation music. 😉
Rays been working on his camera skills today, getting good at that! The meditation music is also a change from the normal, hope no unhappy customers are causing you additional stress my man.
For anyone curious, the blue end gaskets (12:20) are for early series III engines only. Mainly 1995 and 1996; the design was improved for 97 and onward with the locating pin style.
It seems there are two stages involved in this type of repair. The often comments about the parentage of the engine during the tear down. and the compliments it receives when everything returns to their proper positions. It is satisfying to watch everything come together after the battle to remove them at the start.
I think it's funny how you have a Dave working with you there. I just heard "Alvin" from the Chipmunks again at about 23:50 using the torque wrench. That would be a great episode to where Dave screams 'Alvin!". 😅😅😅
My niece had a Pontiac about this year with a V6 when I saw how far the engine was stuffed in there. Thank god I don't have to work on this car. Watching you these last two days. Making my bad back hurt like hell.😂
It's like you said yesterday it's your choice what you do your car. It's your way of making something unique to YOU not others some just don't get it and that's sad!!!!
If I was editing this video, I would have done one thing different. During the soothing music segment, do a pan over so it looks like the music is coming from Dave playing keyboard. A winner, I tell ya, comedy gold.
If Ray is such a good technician how come he doesn’t have a bunch of parts left over from these operations? He hasn’t lightened up the car one bit! I sense shenanigans are afoot here. 😂 great video as always Ray. Nothing but respect even if he’s a meanie who won’t work on Lamborghinis. Bad Ray, no cookies with his fake coffees.😂
Soo glad to see your shop so busy after a year. It seems like things are progressing well and picking up. Your videos are more entertaining than ever and you and the wife seem to be happy in what your doing. Curious question and you dont have to answer it. How do you like doing taxes as a businessman :).
I like the music. Nice change of pace and relaxing, however I wasn't sure I was watching the correct video without hearing that dang "What's Going On"! LOL I swear that tune has been in 95% of Rays videos for the past year! LOL. This was a nice change of pace Ray!
Good morning Ray and wife unit Dave and new kid just finished watching video as you’re putting back together don’t know how you remember everything but I love watching you short or long I learning a lot and as always you all be safe 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Maybe you should look into getting a vapor blaster. It uses water and a mild abrasive to wash and clean parts, kinda like a sandblaster but less invasive. Works wonders for cleaning parts :D
YES‼️ You’ve got your beautiful new parts washer running, Horray for you Ray🔆 One other new addition I noticed, the background piano recital❓. I know why, but seriously ❓. Much rather hear the sounds of the shop and all.
Most automotive water pumps have a ceramic shaft seal that sets in a rubber cup to hold it in place. The rubber cup is made to work with coolant and water. Oil will swell up the rubber and throw the ceramic seal out of alignment with the shaft, then the seal will fail. I would replace the water pump now before the pump failure.
It’s amazing that all small owners have the same problems no matter what you sell what you fix but 95% of your customers are great people but 5% are just obnoxious
They were great motors. Not as much power as some of the v8s at the time, but super reliable. My uncle had a 90s buick riviera with the supercharged 3800 and he put over 300k miles on it before it finally rotted out
@@ronniemullis8717 we did have it with a supercharger as standard, but not a turbo , that motor in our commodore was in production for a decade, it was super reliable for us here in Australia
Overall the 3100/3400/3800’s were absolutely stout motors. The one shortfall to them was GM running Dex-Cool in them. Had a 93 Bonneville with the 3.8 that never had an issue with the intake gaskets. Upgraded to a 98 Bonneville & 96 Regal-both had the exact same failure as the Ferraribird in 04 & 05. Ran regular green coolant in them afterwards-never had another issue.
Oh yeah, he's got a working parts washer, that pleases me a lot.
Came here to say the same thing but expected others to beat me to it.
Surprised he didn't resort to bringing in that pink cement mixer of his🤭
@@aderi31415 Me too! Good to see a parts washer in the shop.
I had to watch the video in three stages, due to having a couple of naps in between the piano music having an effect :)
My cat eats between naps.

It takes a lot to go from employee to shop owner. Here's to your continued success. Thanks for the video.
And the wife unit, handling much of the administrative end of the business, is a large part of his success. So also are his valuable employees.
Love u but please stop the new background music it takes away from you
