Also never ever give up the can throwing it lets of steam and adds a certain disrespect for things that may go boom.

Based on my experience as a former owner of that generation Impala rotor warpage will be back, the only way to get rid of it is upgrading to the police package pads. Wagner Severe Duty or Raybestos PPV are good aftermarket options. There's a TSB addressing this issue.

There was a comment about this awhile back. Aftermarket complete shafts can sometimes be as cheap as the boot replacement labor. It's an argument, is a rebooted OEM shaft better than a complete replacement assembly? Another consideration, if you reboot an older unit, does the mechanic eat the repair when it comes back?

Where I live school kids between 13 and 15 get to go out and experience rea l workplaces a few weeks just so they will have an idea of what to expect from working in whatever business they have an interest. Some companies report an interest in taking on a few kids a year, but often it's parents who has connections that call up and ask if their kids can get to come spend a few weeks.
Some years back a customer asked an my boss agreed to have his son come and have get some experience working as a IT technician. Now I have to say I didn't remember how insecure kids can be when they come into a shop. Selective memory is definitely a thing. But he got to help with everything from servicing broken machines to building and installing servers.
Any way, at the last day of the two weeks we had a talk where he could ask any questions and we could get an idea of how his thought his experience had been. I still remember one of his questions that simply was, did we really always have so much fun at work?
Where his parents worked "fun" was a dirty word. They were always supposed to be professional and joking with collogues were not "professional behavior"...

At the assembly plant all the fluids are put in just before the car is started and driven off. Sixty cars come off the line every hour. For the brake system a vacuum is put on the master cylinder. If the system holds a vacuum there are no leaks and brake fluid is injected. All of this happens in 55 seconds. By applying a vacuum to the fuel tank while injecting fuel, 16 to 20 gallons of fuel is put in the tank in that same 55 seconds. Just a little FYI how the factory does things.🙂

Hey Ray, just a few things. First I love the sound effects when you first introduce a brakleen can and the I love it when you chunk the empty can down the shop. Ignore the haters and keep doing it. Second, I noticed when you were replacing the brake fluid that you did not use a fender liner. Since brake fluid eats the paint off of surfaces, may I suggest a fender liner on future brake fluid changes. Also everything you stated about brake fluid is absolutely correct. I am an Acura and Honda technician of 29 years and I just thought I would inform you and everyone else that Honda recommends brake fluid change every 3 years regardless of mileage. Last point I would like to make is I noticed you installed those brake pads in the calipers dry. I would use a molykote grease because as you are braking, the friction material going across the rotors vibrate at a high rate (not causing a vibration in the vehicle). This vibration actually cause an audible squeal noise. The molykote grease actually dampens this vibration and keeps inhibits the squeal noise. Keep doing what you are doing brother. I find you to be an excellent technician and I love the content you put out.

Biggest mistake GM did was stop making the 3800! Instead of improving the 500k engine they made a boat anchor called the 3.6VVT. The early versions the check engine light comes on at 100k plus miles and costs around $5k to repair because of the timing chain tensioner. You never hear of any of those engines coming close to the the 500k+ miles of the 3.8 litre. Keep throwing your break cleaner cans!

In our shop, we discovered that cleaning the bore of the caliper was helpful in removing old lubricant. Eric O on SMA uses these bore brushes and long Qtip devices to clean the bore. In addition, we also discovered that pistons were hanging or unevenly applying pressure due to pitting. Pitting was caused by contamination of the brake fluid. Many shops don’t promote brake flushes or power steering flushes, but they’re just as important as replacing your other fluids.

Great 10:15 explanation on reason to grease calliper slide pins. I have been telling people for 10yrs+ exact same thing...to aLwAyS Lube calliper pins when doing brske job, so the brake pads can re-center on disk/rotor for even pressure every time you step on brakes, and release both pads when foot comes off brake. If slide pins are not 14:52 well lubed as you show, your new brake pads can drag/rub even when foot is off brake pedal, causing brake pads to wear out un-even and MuCh faster.
(It is surprising the number of people who replace brake pads but give No Thought to greasing slide pins)
Sometimes those rubber cups on tip of those pins will trap air on hole, and want to push pin back out.

Realize you're just replacing parts, but WHY were the inner pads worn down as well as the inner surface of the vented rotors so much more than the outers with the slide pins still in a sliding/non-stuck state? . The outer surface of the rotors looked almost untouched?

Working on my own cars, all 6 of them, I don't put the little rotor bolt back in. If I can get it out the first time without rounding the head or breaking it, I thank God and leave it off. Some people say it is safer to have it. I say if that is the only thing holding your rotor on while driving, you have other issues.

You convinced me to buy one of those caliper compression tools even though I'm just a DIYer. I did my front brakes on my truck on the weekend and used it. Much easier than the C clamp - I need to remember you trick about using the brake pad to space things out a bit. The threads were maxed out by the time I compressed the pistons enough to fit the caliper over the new pads.

  • @LeewardStudios
    @LeewardStudios 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Also that old fluid in the brake lines and components will corrode them from the inside out. Once again, failure just when you need it the most! Regardless of the moisture, hydraulic fluids, like oils break down from heat over time. The dirt will tear up seals and boots at the pistons. Yes, I 100% agree that brake fluid must be changed.

The coating on those rotors is really good. My last set had it, no rust so far. I don't know if it's the strike, but just went Autozone and they robbed me for $120 on a front set of "copper free" ceramic brake pads. Might need to start ordering online, not as convenient but about a 1/3 of the price.
