I think it is wonderful that you, along with Dr. Leo, are teaching natural beekeeping methods that have stood the test of time. I am certain, like myself, many people did not have this knowledge, as it has been replaced over time. Catching swarms of local bees is the correct path. Why buy bees when you can go out and catch some already acclimated to our own area. It makes perfect sense. Please keep the beekeeping videos with Dr. Leo coming! Thank you so very much!

THANK YOU for this. I am so frustrated with my beekeeping. My two hives died over the winter 2023-2024 and I bought two more NUCs and am just absolutely struggling. I considered just giving up because beekeeping has turned out to be incredibly expensive and I have spent over $2,000 already. I saw this video and heard what you had to say, and I think I might try catching a swarm next spring. I have two NUC boxes that I am thinking might good swarm catchers. I already have the frames with all the honey, propolis, etc.....it is just a matter of putting it 10' off the ground...This is my thought process anyway...trying to not have to spend more money.

Hello from Canada. We live in the heart of farm land in Southern Ontario, the mite load here is high with lots of hives used for pollination of crops. We also have winter that confines the bees for months to the hive. I have yet to meet a beekeeper who doesn't treat for mites. I've been told that natural beekeeping won't work here. Has anymore had success keeping bees without the use of chemicals in such conditions? My bee supplier raises them less than 20 minutes from our property, so they are local aclimatized strains, just not wild. Much love and respect Stacy and Doug for everything you share. Thank you in advance 😊

Buying bees is not a scam but free bees are always great! Overwintering successfully has more to do with the management practices and health of the bees than it does with bought vs caught honey bees. There are so many ways to manage bees and this is just one.

The problem is that people need to take a weekend class from a master beekeeper before getting bees. I am a second year beekeeper. I took a weekend class and then did a one year mentorship...Bees die over winter usually because they were not treated for varroa mites prior to going into winter. Colonies shrink during winter so if your mite count is high and the colony is small they will not be able to control the mites..They also need to be feed sugar water or pollen so they don't starve over winter. You don't have to feed sugar water if you leave frames of stored honey in the box. The biggest problem is that people think they put a box in their yard, and that's it done... That's not the case... So now you catch a swarm ... Does anyone here know what to do next? When do you add a second box, when do you make a split, when do you feed them, what does the brood pattern look like, do you see eggs, do you have hive beetles or mites....ect ect. Take a weekend class, people, before getting bees..

    Swarm relocation tip:
I have done this to every swarm i catch and it works. Take down the trap at night with a screen taped over it. Put the trap right next to the hive they will be transferred to. Put branches with leaves on them right in front of the trap totally covering the trap entrance, then remove the screen from the entrance. This will force the bees to realize they have been moved and they will reorient themselves to that specific location. This method allows you to move a trap any distance close by. It always works for me except for maybe a dozen stragglers at the old location. I learned it on TH-cam as well while i was researching this problem of relocation.
Leo, you’re the best! I started keeping bees following your advice since 2020. Everything is going so well! And no chemicals or expenses. Thank you for everything!!!!

    • @Alkarasu
      @Alkarasu 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

Well, if you never saw any bees or swarms it might mean that you're in luck and may actually exploit it for your benefit (and even some nice profit if it goes well). Due to your isolation, you'll be the only source of drones in the area, which means you can choose who your new queens mate with, and that would enable you to do some good selective breeding. Isolated places are naturally valued among beekeepers for that purpose.

I’ve rescued 2 colonies last week. I feed mine a lot of sugar syrup when I catch a new swarm to build them up. They need it to build comb for the Queen to lay eggs and build up strong before winter hits. They do better in a big cluster. The second year I don’t feed them sugar. I’m in hot, dry Texas and once summer hits there’s very little food available for them.

Spray the box twice a day inside with the mix, starting in March. No feeders needed.. Never have I had to buy bees, but I do give them away, when they swarm out.

Stacy I've been watching you for 4 years. Love watching y'all. I have a problem. I have a UTI and am taking Doxycycline. Doesn't seem to be be affecting it. Please tell me what you would do for it. Thank you so much for your videos.

Makes sense. I have minor bees, pollinator bees and possibly honey bees in a tree nearby and huge bumblebees living happily in nature and pollinating my verges. I love the natural way of working with the bees they are amazing creatures!

This is fantastic. I've always wanted to keep bees but the thought of buying them every year was enough to keep me away. Having local swarms finding their home with me just makes sense.

I only feed bee's one time when I get them and only one court a year of sauger water in winter for this I get 2 gallons of honey per hive in central North Carolina

That’s what we do. Native bees do so much better at defending the hive from pest.
My mentor beekeeper taught me to use EO lemongrass, too.

Absolutely the best and by far the most informative video i have seen on bee keeping! He explains to perfection how to assemble the kit. I can't wait to start my own. Honey has been my go to sweetner since i was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and I dont like using artificial sweetners. Honey does not raise my glucose levels and its a blessing to have. Thank yall for the video and thank you to the bees for being so damn sweet😊

I got Saskatraz bees 2022, they didn’t make it over the winter and they were supposed to be the hardiest for my location. I did all the things, spoiled them, fretted over them, drenched them….😔 I’m going to try capturing wild bees now! Almost gave up my hive dying made me so upset. Thanks Doug!
