... One of the greatest concerts of my life was 2ish weeks after 9/11... Part of the Chicago World Music Festival... In a room of maybe 250 people... L. Shankar electric 10-string, Zakir tabla, Vikku Vinayakram
Bumped send... Vikku on ghatam and Gingger Shankar electric 10-string... Oh my god it was amazing. The music itself was incredible but also just the fact that here we were a couple hundred of us all tied to every moment, and it seemed like 40% of all the ethnicities in Chicago were in the crowd. L. and Zakir were supposed to play a Live radio show that early afternoon that I was there for but they didn't because, as explained to us, for the first time in all his touring life, L's violin was broken in transit so they were working like hell to get it fixed. I mean, imagine that show... 2 weeks after 9/11, half the American news and populace is pretty full of hatred for anyone it perceives as being from or near "the middle east", and you have a guy whose last name is Hussain in your band (different spelling but anger and hate don't fret over details). But my sister and I still went to the show hoping to god the violin would get fixed. And then this band and this room just felt like they brought the whole world together. God it was amazing. So yeah, I'd be cool with some L. Shankar in Planet Drum too. Also Oumou Sangare.

A great act we brought to play was Sur Sudha, from Nepal. ‘Some very kind people.
