    We have the BMPCC4k and it's fantastic! Another great thing about it is that it can record straight to an external drive (we use a samsung T5 1TB) which is by far the most cost effective way to store things. Also, the USB-c connection is so fast, you can edit the raw video straight off of the drive.

    I was a newspaper photographer for 35 years before I retired. Now I shoot our church videos and if there is one thing I have learned, stealth is key when shooting in a worship environment. The Blackmagic URSA is not stealthy. It's heavy and expensive. But, to each his own.
    My feeling is I do not want to interfere if someone is contemplating giving their life to the Lord. If a video camera is going to intimidate them, then I need to be invisible. I use two cameras: 1), the Sony A9. It is a low light monster and shoots incredible stills in poor light. And, 2) the Sony A6600. It's small form factor making it ideal to move about and capture great video. I'm not concerned if it looks cinematic. We've been conditioned by many that this is the way to go; not necessarily. The idea is to bring God's word to those who can't be at church, illness, out of town, etc., but I still advocate we go to church and have fellowship with other Christians, always. I use a Rode Wireless Go with our Pastors and it is awesome. Preachers move around a lot and with this audio setup, it doesn't matter where they walk or which direction. The Rode picks up their voices without a hitch.The two cameras I use track beautifully, especially the A6600 which still can focus track using an Atomos Ninja V. Also, with these two cameras, we can livestream to TH-cam or Facebook using the Elgato 4K Cam link. I do appreciate you sharing, thanks.

    The Panasonic g85 is really good as well due to its ability to do 4K and 1080p with no time limit for a dslr/mirrorless camera this is unheard of for a camera at just $700 with a kit lens. And only $150 for 45-150mm lens or 25mm 1.7 lens. An entire setup with tripod and everything can cost around $1000-1100. It also has in body image stabilization. I personally use this camera at our church and love it. If you feel like the options are to expensive in this video this is a great alternative.

    I recommend the C200 over the BMD 4.6k. When It comes to livestreaming Autofocus is so important with so many moving pieces. Also It can use a rather small battery(compared to BMD 4k) that lasts a very long time, so it is great for B-roll. Also the C200 dropped in price like crazy recently(bummer for me because I already had it) I bought it at $7500, and now it is at $5499 on B&H.

    Great review for these cameras! I use the Pocket 6k, C200, and the EOS R for all of our content, photo and video at Midwestern Seminary. The 6k is a beast but is an absolute data hog. One project or event can easily get up to 300-500gb no problem when shooting in BRAW 6k, so if you are considering this camera, be ready to have a solution for storage. The R is an absolute beast and I was very surprised that it is now my favorite photo camera. I also agree that if I need a project done quick and clean, I will absolutely lean more towards the R over the BMPCC6k or the c200. However, if you want the look of a cinema camera then the BM6k is absolutely worth all of the bulk that comes with it. Image is sharp, clean, and very usable, even at 4K proress 422. Just some thoughts from a 6k owner and an R owner. Keep it up and no matter just remember to keep making content.

    Brady, love your stuff, and maybe I am wrong here, but I think most churches, at least initially, are more focused on putting services on the internet rather than shooting video spots. Only one camera you mention is really useful for that.
    Being a smaller church, we use the same cameras for recording on Sunday as we do for shooting interviews and other footage. Since we are 80-90% live services and only about 10-20% special shooting, we erred on getting something that would meet that need. Also, our sanctuary puts our cameras about 70 feet from the stage as to not be a distraction. This means long zoom lenses and para focal is a huge plus.
    We have been very happy with camcorders, in this case, our XF400/GX10 Canon cameras. 4K is great and low light with 1" sensor looks nice without lots of graininess. These run about $2k and work out of the box with no lenses. A great choice for churches without a higher-end videographer. They are simple to use and once configured work reliably every week. The connections to the BMD TV Studio 4K make IMAG and recording easy for our team. Combine with a Bescor PT mount and a remote Lanc and we have found a decent way to shoot high-quality video in a live setting that works well for our periodic for spots. Hopefully, we can do more spots in the future, but it requires lots more time and effort.

    • @prochurchtools
      @prochurchtools  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're correct. Churches are certainly more interested in broadcasting their services than storytelling and social media content. I couldn't disagree more with that approach and have been quite vocal about it for many years.

    • @grantmerickson
      @grantmerickson 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@prochurchtools Totally agree that live streaming is of dubious value. However, after watching this for a year, we have found two benefits of recording a sermon video.
      1. Posting the sermon Monday morning helps to engage people who aren't able to attend and also (as a surprise to us) has been a factor for new people coming in the door. People know what to expect and often watch several videos before attending. This could just be our demographic.
      2. We take a short clip from the sermon and share it on social media. This has had significantly more reach than we expected, again boosting first-time visitors.
      Before, we had no content. Now that we are recoding, we have some content to work with and the ongoing cost of support is low. Feels like good bang for the buck and we can grow into other strategies as we get better at doing video.
      We are seeing strong growth with this as one of our primary strategies.

    One thing to note about the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera (both the 4K & 6K) is that battery life sucks. You'll need to purchase a portable power solution to use it for a lengthy duration.

    @ariad7452 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Considering that the ultra-thirsty BMPCC uses the same sort of batteries that could make midrange Canon cameras last 2ish hours, I think you also need to get at least a massive DTap battery just to last the whole mass
    P.s. I can tell that my rampant camera review binge brought this video to my feed...because I’m not a Christian :|

    • @StPetersFL
      @StPetersFL 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you're recording, the batteries last about 45 minutes (at least with RAW video), so yeah...either an outlet or an external pack are needed. There is an external pack that can be had for about 100 (not a v-mount - I think the Make Art Now channel did a thing about it as well as Gerald undone). You do need to rig the BMPCC4k out a little more, but it is possible to use it without rigging it out - it's just more limited.

    so quick question then - is the ursa the only camera you referenced in this video for production/live stream ? we have a atem 4k-me1 switcher and want to add 2 new camera's on stage decks in the back of the room. we currently have a canon xc10 and a sony pxw-x70. as far as I want to liquidate the sony and get 2 more canon's. I was looking at the xa55's but the eosR keeps coming up, but then in this video you say its not really a live stream/production option. i have watched several other church's and the are using gh5's and the likes. just trying to figure out if i need an eosR or the xa55 or something else.......... thanks in advance !! love the vids and glad Jake had you on.

      I can see that for the Pocket 4k and R... But the UMP? It's compatible with B4 lenses, has 12G-SDI, has an optional CCU panel, studio viewfinder, tally lights, integrated intercom, etc. Several large churches use them for broadcast.
      It may not be as good at multicam broadcast as a purpose built $30k studio camera, but it's far from unusable in that scenario. Especially in churches.

      The GH5 is an outstanding camera! But the Pocket 4K is much better for live streaming. It has tally lights, natively integrates with all Blackmagic live streaming hardware like their line of ATEMs, has pro-level codecs, and XLR inputs. Great review, thank you Brady.. although I don’t agree that the bmpcc isn’t a good option for streaming.. I understand it’s most likely the lack of sdi that may be the reason for this statement. But the hdmi can be converted to sdi with an inexpensive adapter.. also a lot of smaller churches, like my own, may opt for the ATEM mini which is hdmi only or the ATEM tv HD, which has both sdi & hdmi.
    We couple the ATEM mini with the inexpensive Epiphan Webcaster X2 encoder for streaming. This makes just about any camera with a clean hdmi output an option for streaming. The bmpcc 4k or a GH5 would be wonderful streaming options in our configuration.
    Currently we’re using a Sony pxw-x90 and a lumix S1 as our cameras.. they work perfectly.

      That's helpful to know, Jake. I'm not an expert with live production by any means - so when a camera isn't made with that usage in mind, I tend not to recommend it. But it's true that the lines between broadcast and narrative are getting slimmer as more tech is released that allows for wider uses of cameras.

      Pro Church Tools with Brady Shearer We looked at the BMD mini pro for a recent camera purchase. We went with Sony FS7 although I liked the BMD cam and have owned one in the past. One thing worth mentioning is the superb metadata management that the BMD has. Most churches do little in the way of keeping a video library. But that can be valuable in promoting various events in the life of the church. Use this years footage to promote next year’s events. BMD CAMERA makes it easy to keep up with your footage through an insane number of tags recorded on the footage itself. SONY doesn’t hold a candle to BMD.

    • @prochurchtools

      The Blackmagic cameras can record indefinitely. The biggest thing holding you back would be recording space on your cards and as long as your card is able to sustain write speeds. But we're talking hours and hours.
      As for the EOS R, there's a 30-minute record limit. And like I say in the video, using an external recorder can bypass this.

    Although these cameras are really good there is a very big issue when you recommend cameras like this. Most churches don't have professional cameraman. And your cheapest camera which is the Canon EOS R with the lens runs about $4000. A better solution is a Nikon Z6. A cost about $2300 including a lens and it has image stabilization. It can be used to do professional cinematic shoot as well as live streaming. And the color science that comes out of it is much better.

      The Nocturne Brain When my Canadian church plant launched we spent about $2K on our first camera. We were a church of about 100 at the time. That’s the cost of the body for #2 and #3 on this list.
      Not saying that every church can afford every camera, but it generally comes down to priorities, not ability.
