    One thing I disagree on that you mentioned was about the manual trucks, learning how to drive a standard transmission is important, it’s safer, you have more control of your vehicle, the school I’m going to won’t let anyone pull a trailer until they are shifting properly. Canada has changed the laws so that if you do your road test with an automatic transmission you are restricted to only driving automatic. There are still plenty of standard transmission trucks on the road so you WILL be losing out on job opportunities… and to be honest it’s really not that hard to drive standard… you’re getting skilled trainers to teach you so go for it! There’s no reason for anyone to make a big deal out of having to learn on a standard transmission. If you’re paying these high prices for your license, get your money’s worth and learn everything you can, do NOT be restricted to only automatic.

    I have wanted to be a truck driver my whole life. I was a carpenter at about 20 when I talked with a cement truck driver who had a class 3A license and I could believe he got paid to drive. I finally got into the industry and it is my favorite thing in the world. I operate Hydro'Vac truck and I love it.

    I became a trucker in the 70s... back when you could get away with "outlaw" activity that would enable you to actually earn a living. I was in the industry for 40 years. Even with all of the freedoms that I had during my career, I would give anything to go back and choose a different career path! I can't even begin to fathom the mindset that would lead someone to want to become a trucker in the modern era. If I could give each of you prospective truckers a single piece of advice it would be this...DON'T DO IT! And this coming from a man that had a pretty damn successful career.

      I'm 19, recently licensed and just got a job. I'm not in long haul but I still work 14 hour days for effectively no pay. I adore trucks, I love the feel of pulling 63.5 Tonnes. Trucking is both the best and worst thing that's happened to me. The only thing that keeps me going is the waves from my fellow truckers as well as the end of the day when I get to go to bed.

    132$ for 6 months classes. Includes the licence for Manual transmission.
    Some insurances companies in Québec will consider this class to be worth 2 years of experience, but only CFTR Schools. (Helped me alot)

    I'm sure that some schools are charging an arm and a leg to get your CDL. I got my CDL December 2021 and I didn't have to takeout a second mortgage on my house. I paid $3,800 US Dollars for a Class A course through an accredited community college. I was certified in a manual transmission truck which allows me to drive an automatic or a manual shift transmission. Was it a little more involved having to up shift and down shift...yes, but it's doable. If you have some experience with a manual transmission truck or car, I would recommend testing with a manual transmission semi truck. it certifies you to drive both automatic or manual transmission trucks. the instructors at the college went out of their way to help each student, out of four students, only one failed. classes are purposely kept small to focus on the students. They want as many to pass as possible, but just like not everyone is destined to be a Doctor or an Engineer, some people are not cut out to drive large trucks! it is what it is...

    Do you know perhaps whether some Canadian trucking companies hire foreign truck drivers with experience, like me from South Africa, and then sponsor the licensing and training fees once they arrive in Canada? Based on my research, ive seen that the companies do take on foreign drivers with international licenses, but its not clear to me whether its normal practice for them to cover the licensing and training fees. I am trying to research fees and procedures as I have no idea where to start or who to ask for advice.

    I became a truck driver last year. I paid 3000 for my CDL school in the US. However I don’t know if the cost for school has gone up since they are now requiring us to go to CDL school as opposed to before where you did not have to attend school but were able to get your class a license as long as you had a truck and trailer to use for your exam.

  • @west2401
    @west2401 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    9:15 if you plan on doing flatbed, tanker, oil field, heavy haul, and oversized trucking work when you 1st get your CDL, it is NOT advised that you avoid schools that offer to train students to use a manual transmission. I Dunno how it works in Canada, but in the U.S. if you pass your CDL road test with an automatic you will have a restriction on your license thus legally you can't drive a manual. Where as if you pass your test with a manual you can legally drive stick + auto. Driving a manual will open more doors for you within the industry as some small or medium size company's want you to know how to drive stick or only have stick shift trucks for company drivers. A good school will take their time with students teaching them how to shift correctly and possibly have an in-class simulator training you on how to shift b4 you go out on the road. Also if you go to the "free" mega carrier schools they will only train you on an automatic. A professional driver will adapt to drive both transmissions.
    Yes, auto's are more present in newer truck's. And for most new drivers who plan on doing van/reefer for the rest of their career there is less of a need to drive manual. But don't think that new manual trucks will COMPLETLY stop being in production because some small carriers + owner ops still buy them. As a new driver you want to leave possibilities open for your trucking future and being taught at a school the right way how to drive a manual (and getting endorsements) is the way to do it.

    • @690_5
      @690_5 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's the same way in Canada. If you spent anything more than 10 hours with Autos in training, your Manual ticket would be invalid, I guess.

    I was paying very close attention to every single word you said until the nine minute mark, if you’re afraid of a manual transmission, you probably shouldn’t be behind the wheel of a big check.
    If a driver can’t handle a clutch and a stick shift, I don’t think they should be hauling big weights
    Still giving this video a thumbs up 👍

    I am US WA state local truck driver with one year and three months after the school. I've never been involved in trucking industry before. Found old school with good recommendations. It cost me little more than $6000. For local positions I recommend remove all restrictions from your DL. Recommend to go to school instead of sigh contract with company, because this is chain on your hands, no freedom. For local, you can get license for straight truck or bus. After pandemic bus driver get more by hour. First year was taught, I did everything what they wanted. After one year switch to other company from semi truck to straight with raise more than $4.

So yo will need a manual truck and even if the truck is auto but manually chifted with no clutch pedal because of sloppy roads you wanna hold your truck with lower gears slowly down without to much of the brake pedal and more of ENGINE AIR BRAKE we call it here freno.

    it cost me just a little over $600.00 us to get my Class A license. I went to a community college though. The most expensive I've seen in the States was $4500

    In BC it cost me 15,400 for the melt program and ICBC first requires you pass an airbrake/class 1 knowledge test.
    My school trained me on manual transmissions and honestly I enjoy it more after working for a carrier now with all autos.

      That's great to hear! More experience under your belt. $15k for the MELT program is definitely pricey, but sounds like it was worth it for you!

    In Manitoba you have NO CHOICE but to take your test in a MANUAL truck. I am thinking of leaving this province BECAUSE of this stupid rule.

    • @itsumonihon
      @itsumonihon 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      come on now, driving stick is not that bad and manitoba is the easiest place ever to learn it...there's nothing but flat land from horizon to horizon. i get that automatic is convenient but surely you could put up with it just to do the test and give yourself options in the future..! and if you ever buy your own truck, you better think long and hard about whether an automatic is a smart choice. i am not a trucker but i do manage parts of a trucking outfit and the autos have been very frustrating on the entire fleet which is made of mostly low mileage leased freightliners. aside from the emissions problems (incessant) the transmissions fail to some degree every few months on almost all the trucks.

      @TSARMOTAF 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@NorthAmerican-Trucking-News I didn't finish my driver's training here b/c i am finding so few places that have manual trucks. I have plenty of trucker friends but they are all in automatics. So you are training on a manual just to go and work for a carrier who has nothing but automatics. I am frustrated and don't know what to do.
