Since there seems to be a lot of footwork involved, a noble longsword wielder would wind around the controlling second blade and force the dual wielder to intervene or get stabbed. Winding is faster than moving your whole body a full step for the attack in the second tempo. It seems to me, that dual wielding where parry and attack happen in one tempo might be more useful in practice. But that is only a thought experiment as I haven't tried it in sparring.

If the other fighter choses to try and press on and wind there its incredibly risky for them. Trying to wind in is far from a certainty anyway but you can try it in single sword because doing so means the other fighters sword is engaged with yours and you have a level of control over what it does, thats not the case here though, if you dont succeed in winding that attack in on the first motion you are going to get smacked with the other sword and have given up much hope of defending yourself, that's a hell of a risk. That second sword isn't locked in place and can pass off or wind up itself. Intervening to defend yourself as you would with a single sidesword against the same move for example does not prevent you from making use of the additional weapon to strike. Equally if you press in the second sword can go for extended targets such as your hands as you wind very easily. Overall if your winding is not so confident that you can entirely disable the opponent on the first motion I think its probably a death sentence to attempt.

Nice video series! I know that you focus on Hema, but would be awesome to see as well how dual sword here differs from Musashi's dual katana style. Have you ever studied it or know some content creator who had?

I read a few excerpts, but nothing in whole and with a serious approach - too little time, to many interesting sources unfortunately.

@@SchildwachePotsdam even though not very common in history, I recon the single tempo attack+defense nature of the dual wield would be very powerful if mastered.

@@UlissesSampaio I am not sure if these contratempo action were indeed rare. Viggiani for example brings these as one of the main factors why defence is preferable to offence all things being equal. They are hard to pull off well, but if done correctly they will always end the fight immediately in your favor 😊

@@SchildwachePotsdam but you mean with a single weapon? Or using two different ones? Having two would mean two very different actions at once would be possible, which seems kind of OP although probably very hard to master indeed.

@@UlissesSampaio Both :) the second weapon (or a shield, Buckler, dagger etc.) makes it way easier though - quite OP indeed 😁
