I haven't watched kalki yet but as an Indian i can confirm that jokes in Indian movies are mostly carried out by the way they are delivered in the language. That's what makes them funny, but yes I can see how that wouldn't get carried across through subtitles.
As an anime fan of over 25 years, this is why I understand why some don't like English dubs. The wordplay in the original Japanese can be incredibly dense at times, and that becomes near-impossible to translate when that happens.
I am an Indian, i watched it in Hindi The jokes in the movie were absolutely cringe-worthy. Without them the movie would've been much better than it is. First half of the movie should've been 30 minutes and the rest of the time should've been dedicated to the rest of the movie
They focused on details too. My fav detail is when in mahabharat flash back of ashwatthama, while he was walking we could see blood dripping from his shoes, as it was mentioned that there was so much bloodshed there that the soil turned red.
Also when Ashwatthama fell there was an elephant as well, could it be the elephant named Ashwatthama who died so Yudhishthira use the elephants' name and spread a rumor that Ashwatthama has died but it was actually an elephant named the same, the reason being Yudhishthira never lies but he found a loophole but he still in fact went to Naraka for half lying but eventually sent to Swarga.
yeah but they ignored the most important details . Krishna vowed not to fight ,yet they showed his in fist fight with aswathama . Krishna wears yellow dress not white , arjuna wear silver dress not blue . Ashwathama didnt invoke brahmastra , nor did he sent it to uttara's womb in the first attempt , nor did it happen in the battlefield.

Karna killed Abhimanyu, Arjun's son, when he was defenceless. That's why Lord Krishna said that it's right to use adharma against adharma and told Arjun to kill Karna when he was lifting the wheel.

Very subtle Karna links. 1. Armour. Cute. 2. Bujji's wheel taken out. Like Karna's chariot. 3. Rough relations with his Teacher. Could be stretching. But hey! It makes the movie more fun.
In the interval block, he holds back a wheel like structure, like how he does when he dies. The parrot shows a sun card, karna is born through the blessing of the sun god. He’s a bonded and found by a stranger, and he says that he didn’t cry…as if he was habituated to war…very well done. The Easter eggs about him being karna were sprinkled throughout the movie.
The whole movie is too meta. That's one of the reasons the story doesn't involve the audience like a grounded depiction would. The main reason why it is a hit is because of the expansive world and characters like Ashwaththama, Baani & Yahskin. It deserves a re-watch just to appreciate the details of the visuals. The utter disappointing thing can be we might not even see the face of Kalki. The part 2 may end with his birth. As of now, I don't think they'll make a part 3 with Kalki's story as they must cast someone even bigger than Prabhas in terms of stardom and the chances are low unless Nagi has some other plans.
22:17 I think what happened is, immediately after that, we see him making a deal with the Complex claiming that he is the only one who can fight Aswathama. It makes sense that they would have returned the units probably even given some more to him to help him.
I wish the movie was WAY darker. Like, borderline R rated. you have this terrifying animation (and beautiful song sung by Ashwatthama's actor, at least in the hindi dub), and a pretty dark first 5 minutes, and then you have some random bounty hunter calling Bhairava a goddamn frog for refusing to fight? the tonal whiplash was SO weird. I wish we focused on a character like Sumati or generally how depraved the people of Kashi have become. i also kinda wish it went more in the cyberpunk direction, but that might just be me liking cyberpunk as a genre.
I suggest watching the movie 'Bhramayugam', its a historical fantasy horror movie. Indian cinema is pretty diverse depending on the respective industry, Bollywood is still overrepresented in the west, South Indian cinema is now gaining popularity.
I have never heard about Kalki before. But just based on the brief description of him being the final avatar of Vishnu at the end of days sounds like he’d be an interesting inclusion in a post apocalyptic urban fantasy story I wanna write.

In the final war he will save the good people and Destroy the evil forces mainly personified by the 5 bad qualities like lust , anger, greed etc . The Demonic personification of these qualities that corrupt human society since ages is a demon called Kali who takes his physical manifestation in Kali Yuga or 4th age itself. Kali started getting powerful after Krishna left the earth and dwapar Yuga or 3rd age ended. According to Hindu calendar we are currently at the initial stage of the 4th age .

Okay so guy from India here. I share the same sentiments towards how they portrayed Bhairava, and tbh I think his car Bujji was funnier than him(So did most of my friends). And yeah I agree, I am more invested in Sumiti than Bhairava, and Kinda wanna know more about the little girl that woke Ashwatthama up and keeps following him, cuz she maybe some sort of avatar as well.... or felt kinda built up that way. As for the Villain who is named The Supreme Yaskin is not a character I know... People in theory videos here theorise him to be an incarnation or a version of Kali (basically the villain of the kalki Puran). But I don't think he is that, because the next movie is where Kali would be born, and I don't think the infant is gonna defeat Yaskin. In the movie, there was a stray dialogue saying some people say he is a Rakshasa, but that could just be a throwaway line. Lemme know what you think in the future, love your videos btw

The mythological villan is supposed to be Kali (not the goddess Kali), who is a spirit type of thing . He transfer from one body to other to control people's minds. And when the reveal it's true form it will be of two heads.
The movie was pretty accurate, the only part I found to be inaccurate was the karna pushing back arjuna’s chariot part, as well as him being stronger. In the original Vyas Mahabharat, the original oldest version, this incident actually doesn’t take place and Arjun is constantly mentioned as the stronger bow wielder. It makes me think that this is more of a legend that was added in newer writings of the Mahabharata actually, not the original intended one.
Arjuna did push back karna's chariot thousands of meters, Karna while moving Arjuna's chariot a few meters, was stronger because of lord Krishna sitting on it. I think.

Ashwatthama is the most interesting character to me in Mahabharata because he is said to be an incarceration of Shiva and had the most potential among his peers. If you know that there is a classification of warriors in Hindu mythology, especially in Mahabharata. Every incarnation is classified as Atirathi, which is the second-highest ranking of a warrior. Only Ashwatthama had the potential to become a Mahamharathi which is the highest raking of a warrior, as a human. But without his gem, he can not reach that level.
Nah. Ashwathama was ranked Maharathi in the Mahabharata. He has to be able to defeat atleast 207,360,000 warriors simultaneously to become Mahamaharathi, which would be unlikely even with the gem. This rank is usually for the gods like Shiva, Kartikeya, Shakti..etc

I never said, Karna wasn't skilled, just not as great as Arjuna. The fact is Karna is defeated by Arjun, Satyaki, Bheem and Abhimanyu many times.

He didn't turn in the kid because he heard from him that he was from Shambhala. And he heard the Complex guys saying that they must have taken SUM-80 to Shambhala, so he knew that the boy is his way to get there.
you mentioned getting into the Ramayana and the Mahabharata, and I thought i'd give some extra pointers (aside from reading the original texts) back in the mid 90s, there was this anime adaptation of the Ramayana that was SO GODDAMN cool. It's on youtube and it's called Ramayana: The Legend of Ram. Nitesh Tiwari is making a two-part movie series on it too (coming out 2025 i believe), so yeah. but whatever you do, stay a MILE away from Adipurush. it's legit as bad as the Avatar live-action movie. if you want a twist on the story, check out Amish Tripathi's Ram Chandra books. Mahabharata is a story which i don't think i've really seen in much detail. There have been a few TV serials that came outa while ago, but no really good summarized versions (aside from childrens' books, but i could be VERY wrong). The movie Baahubali (featuring Bhairava's actor) takes a lot of elements from the Mahabharata, so if you can read between the lines, you can see a fair bit of the story. It's also just a BADASS movie, and it had the same effect as LoTR did to the rest of the world (i don't compare people to aragorn. i compare people to Baahubali).
totally agree with you...i mean yeah i get it the character bhairava is supposed to be a good for nothing bounty hunter who just slacks around and dreams of getting a permanent seat in that triangular structure/the complex...but the jokes are really way off the track...like come on he's a bounty hunter man..they should have added a bit more serious tone to his character...but again..the 1st half was just an introduction to the world building/the near end of kaliyuga world..so no complains there
Note: karna is most powerful after Krishna and good person but since he was with bad people side in Mahabharata time he got killed and he did not get respect he should get. So, god wanted him to take birth in ‘future’ i.e, kaliyugam. He will behave in same way but he changes his mind eventually and fight along with good guys against bad people and save the world. That is the concept.
So there is a theory that says that Bhairava(name of an aspect of shiva) the main lead , who can be considered a interpretation of shiva will give kalki a white horse(aka bujji) and a sword(may led to weapon in next movie) to fight his enemies . So it could be like that too.

It is believed that Shiva blesses him with a portion of his divine energy, making Ashwathama extremely powerful.

I suggest the first time watchers to chill and dont get overwhelmed , watch the first half with patience and don't keep yourself reminding that it is slow nothing had happened it is slow ,brhu nothing had happened because there might something will be happening in the 2nd half so let that excitement out and absorb the movie so you will know the purposes for that slow build
About seizing the units Bhairava was saying that to gain the trust of the Rebel .Manas gave the work to Bhairava.If im not wrong Bhairava had 50 ,000 units and he wanted one big bounty to enter complex.
Btw, with the spoiler thing. Bhairava is both the avatar of Shiva, and has the memories of Karna. The movie does actually mix a lot of characters together cuz Indian mythology has A LOT OF CHARACTERS. So yeah, you were correct as well. I believe it is more apparent if you know hindi and actually see through the references, but yeah he is both.
@@dumflame ....Umm, no. Kalki is the Avatar of Vishnu. Last of the famous Dash-avatars of Vishnu. Bhairava is also famously a form/said avatar of Lord Shiva. We use those names quite interchangeably.

After a reincarnation, you should have the memories of the past lives to know who you were. And in the scene, bhairava was unconscious when karna was active. Reincarnation is the concept of soul which is the same in all lifetimes but the person or personality comes from memory.

Sorry to say , in Hindu religion, there is never a place where ashwatthama was saved by karna, and there is mistake is ashwatthama is not using bhramastra when Arjun is using, movie writer recreate what not happened in Mahabharata, just to give hype for karna and even according to text no one of people or even kali doesn't know that when kalki will born or where untill kalki will be strong enough to beat Kali ( actually villian) , in text they never said that karna will reborn or his presence will appear in future

You'll be seeing the 7 immortals of the sanatan dharma. Ashwathama is one who's assigned to protect the mother of Kalki, King Mahabali - In the kingdom where kalki will be born, Ved Vyasa- The teacher of Kalki on the Vedas, Parshurama- Teacher of Kalki in the art of weapons, Kripacharya- Teacher of Kalki in politics, Vibhishana- The trusted advisor to Kalki and Hanuman- The devotee of Kalki. As far as the part where Kalki arrives in a white horse from the heavens was explained very well in the movie. Kalki would be concieved when the cosmos is alligned in a certain way, the last time that happened was during the birth of Krishna. As far as Kali goes, Kali would rule all of humanity and would demand the teachings of the Kalyug. There will be very limited humanity left in this world and Kalki would be forced to destroy everything. The world would begin again from Satyug. These immortals would be found in a place called Gyanganj or more popularly known as Shangila. In the second part of the movie, we'll see how Sumati and Bhairav reach Gyangunj and meet the immortals. Kali would be able to corrupt all of humanity by that time and part 2 would be the hope that Kalki would be born and Ashwathama would have completed his task of the Kalyug and would sacrifice himself to save Kalki from Kali. Part 3 would be Kalki's training under the other immortals, the end of Kali, the end of Kalyug and the beginning of Satyug again.
Well I hope the next movies are gonna be baddas cuz the final Avatar of the supreme deity, the 7 Immortals, the demon Kali and the 5 deadly sins of Hinduism and the twin demon brothers are coming, please don't ruin that movies like they did the first half of this one

About the units. He had 10000 from that intro fight scenes. He spent 5000. His units were ceased but he did make a deal with the villain. So may be they just gave him his units back.
No when bhairava got blacklisted after that in a scene he made a deal with complex to find sambhala ,i think there he got the things to modify the vehicle

I'm gonna say that those who haven't read or seen Mahabharat and aren't familiar with Indian culture will probably not get this movie. Even if you are familiar with it you probably won't understand it completely if you haven't lived in India for a sufficient amount of time and have talked to people from all stages of society. This is from an Indian's point of view to make someone outside understand
I think the sabertooth tiger reference was like Remember some years ago a news came that we have dna of sabertooth and mammoth and we could make a clone in future . I think it was referencing to that
I felt Kalki was a flex film. I felt they didn't foreshadow Bairava as Karna enough and some things in the ending fight don't make sense. Like a character who can break through stones and stuff gets stuck to those same stones via Dr octopus like robots sent by the villain. I wish they'd given Ashwathama more screen time overall and didn't meander with the jokes when people were literally dying. Also nothing felt like I was in a dystopia; anything dystopic felt like a minor inconvenience at most and none of the characters take damage. I get some of them are Gods in human form but what about the other human characters they don't take damage either. also the points made by The Mythology Guy

Complex blacklisted him and seized all his units but he confronted them after he knew that he could get to shamballah. he was then given a chance to bring back sum80 and if he does he can go into complex so they released his units. This way he can prepare and get her back for the supreme.
Also, I totally agree with you about the Bhairava stand-up comedy that was sub-par, I wish the movie didn't try to be as light-hearted as it tried to be, but the movie needed to succeed economically too, and local Indian audiences who don't know the mahabaratham and are watching it only because they were fans of the actor who played Bhairava (or just wanted a normal Indian-Telugu movie on a grander hollywood esque scale)would have enjoyed the bits that you said were dull, and I totally agree with you that they were dull. I would've loved to have seen more of Sumathi or even the other side characters like Mariam and stuff. And I'm not trying to defend the filmmakers choices, but I think it was necessary considering that the movie needed to be a huge success in order for sequels to be possible.
In Original Mahabharata written by Vyas ji, Arjuna was the best warrior after Krishna.. Karna and the others were not close enough of his power or skillset .... Rukmi also had the vijaya movie along with karna and Vijaya Bow was not better than Gandiva... It was stated by many like Lord Shiva, Narad ji, Lord Parshuram and many other rishis that Arjuna was the most superior warrior and better than him was only krishna..
Hope this helps in understanding. from India. It draws from the events at the end of the epic Mahabharata and the Mahabharata war in which the previous Avatar of Vishnu or Krishna is present as the charioteer and projects it to the next or 10th and final Avatar of Vishnu that is Kalki and to the imagined events of his birth at the end of Kali Yuga or the Age of Darkness. As per ancient Indian scriptures Kaliyuga starts with death of Krishna and ends with Kalki who destroys darkness and restores balance to the world and creation. Comparing it with anything else except a few stylisations is missing the point. If you really want to get the context read a little into at least the Mahabharata and the concept of yuga though at most places you will find wrong idea of timelines. The Character of Aswathhama (old man) played by Amitabh Bachhan is a character of Mahabharata who was cursed with immortality for his crime of killing unborn children in the mothers womb. Yes in Hindu tradition immortality is a curse as it prevents you from renewing yourself. Aswathhama lives through 6000 yrs to protect the unborn child that is destined to be the 10th Avatar Kalki and be released of his curse of immortality and bringing his Karma full circle. Madhava is another name for Avatar Krishna. If there is anything else you want to know of the scriptural or historical/ Puranic context pl do ask. Yes Mahabharata and Puranas are part of history in the Dharmic tradition and most Indians believe this to be true in parts if at times not whole owing to distortions of time.
The first half had this effect on everyone. Especially the scenes with that Bounty Hunter. I hated those. Except his fight with Ashwatthama and the final fight when the big reveal happens.
Karana is the son of sun god he is invincible becoz he born with suns armor and earrings no weapon can hurt him which is why Indra father of Arjuna went to Karna as a beggar and asked him for his armor which was attached to his body in exchange he gave him his weapon which is called VASAVI SHAKTI which he never got to use coz he was killed
I loved the parallel of Bhairava stopping the wheel on fire which is echoeing Karna's death when his chariot wheel was stuck in mud and Arjuna had to kill him unfairly.

The point about Bhairava's character echoing Karna is on point. I noticed that Karna was known for his selflessness which was because of his adoptive parents raising him with love. In Bhairava's case, his adoptive father tried to sell him off which made Bhairva selfish throughout his life. It's an interesting dichotomy

This is the most Indian reaction to a movie I h've seen from a foreigner! Her character name was Sumati/Sum-80. You can read more about 'Kalki' avatar of Lord Vishnu in Kalki Purana. It also mentions (just like the film) his mother's name as Sumati, birthplace as Shambala and him incarnated at the end of Kaliyug era.
The dark theme does not do too well with the broader indian audience so the tonal shift was done to keep the 'indianess' but it would have been sooo much better.

If you are looking for another story from the Mahabharta, there is this animated film associated with Disney but only shown in India named Arjun: The Warrior Prince. I watched it recently and really liked the animation. I couldn't find an englished dubbed version and the subbed version was spotty on translating I'm pretty sure. I got the gist of the story though so I don't know, watch it if you want something like that 😊
I must tell you this movie does not follow the scriptures properly. Many Hindus believe in popularized folklores rather than the actual scriptures. According to Vyasa's Mahabharata (Critical Editions):- 1.) The Gandiva bow was returned to Agni by Arjuna after 36 years of the war. In the movie it is found buried in a desert. 2.) The scene where Krishna curses Ashvatthama did not happen in the battle field, this event occurred near the Ganga river in the presence of Vyasa, Narada, and the 5 Pandavas. 3.) The gem was given to Bhima by Ashvathama himself and Bhima later gave it to Draupadi and later crowned it on Yudhishthira's brow. It was not taken forcefully by Lord Krishna. 4.) Many people like Karna because they do not know the scriptures well. Most of their opinions are based on folklores and legends. Karna is neither a better person, nor a better warrior compared to Arjuna according to the manuscripts (our scriptures very clearly about this). Karna is a straight up villain who was always jealous of Arjuna ever since their Gurukul days. Karna was NOT an outcast in the scriptures. [I can keep going on about this topic] 5.) The story told in the movie about 'Arjuna and Karna pushing back each others chariots in a duel' does not occur in the scriptures. (it is possibly a folklore, but not from the manuscripts) 6.) Karna died in a fair fight with Arjuna. The legend of killing Karna while he was lifting the wheel is not accurate at all. 7.) Krishna always wore yellow silk robes not white and also he wore his golden armour during the battle. (its a minor change)

I haven't watched kalki yet but as an Indian i can confirm that jokes in Indian movies are mostly carried out by the way they are delivered in the language. That's what makes them funny, but yes I can see how that wouldn't get carried across through subtitles.
As an anime fan of over 25 years, this is why I understand why some don't like English dubs. The wordplay in the original Japanese can be incredibly dense at times, and that becomes near-impossible to translate when that happens.
I'm a Hindi speaker, and the jokes didn't carry even in the Hindi dub. I think the dialogues were written keeping only Telugu audience in mind.

They focused on details too. My fav detail is when in mahabharat flash back of ashwatthama, while he was walking we could see blood dripping from his shoes, as it was mentioned that there was so much bloodshed there that the soil turned red.

He’s a bonded and found by a stranger, and he says that he didn’t cry…as if he was habituated to war…very well done.
The Easter eggs about him being karna were sprinkled throughout the movie.

The whole movie is too meta. That's one of the reasons the story doesn't involve the audience like a grounded depiction would.
The main reason why it is a hit is because of the expansive world and characters like Ashwaththama, Baani & Yahskin. It deserves a re-watch just to appreciate the details of the visuals.
The utter disappointing thing can be we might not even see the face of Kalki. The part 2 may end with his birth. As of now, I don't think they'll make a part 3 with Kalki's story as they must cast someone even bigger than Prabhas in terms of stardom and the chances are low unless Nagi has some other plans.

Like, borderline R rated. you have this terrifying animation (and beautiful song sung by Ashwatthama's actor, at least in the hindi dub), and a pretty dark first 5 minutes, and then you have some random bounty hunter calling Bhairava a goddamn frog for refusing to fight? the tonal whiplash was SO weird. I wish we focused on a character like Sumati or generally how depraved the people of Kashi have become. i also kinda wish it went more in the cyberpunk direction, but that might just be me liking cyberpunk as a genre.

I suggest watching the movie 'Bhramayugam', its a historical fantasy horror movie. Indian cinema is pretty diverse depending on the respective industry, Bollywood is still overrepresented in the west, South Indian cinema is now gaining popularity.

I have never heard about Kalki before. But just based on the brief description of him being the final avatar of Vishnu at the end of days sounds like he’d be an interesting inclusion in a post apocalyptic urban fantasy story I wanna write.

Okay so guy from India here. I share the same sentiments towards how they portrayed Bhairava, and tbh I think his car Bujji was funnier than him(So did most of my friends). And yeah I agree, I am more invested in Sumiti than Bhairava, and Kinda wanna know more about the little girl that woke Ashwatthama up and keeps following him, cuz she maybe some sort of avatar as well.... or felt kinda built up that way.
As for the Villain who is named The Supreme Yaskin is not a character I know... People in theory videos here theorise him to be an incarnation or a version of Kali (basically the villain of the kalki Puran). But I don't think he is that, because the next movie is where Kali would be born, and I don't think the infant is gonna defeat Yaskin.
In the movie, there was a stray dialogue saying some people say he is a Rakshasa, but that could just be a throwaway line. Lemme know what you think in the future, love your videos btw

The mythological villan is supposed to be Kali (not the goddess Kali), who is a spirit type of thing . He transfer from one body to other to control people's minds. And when the reveal it's true form it will be of two heads.
I think it would be easier to understand which kali it is if we use IAST for devanagari script.

The movie was pretty accurate, the only part I found to be inaccurate was the karna pushing back arjuna’s chariot part, as well as him being stronger.
In the original Vyas Mahabharat, the original oldest version, this incident actually doesn’t take place and Arjun is constantly mentioned as the stronger bow wielder.
It makes me think that this is more of a legend that was added in newer writings of the Mahabharata actually, not the original intended one.
I think film makers wanted to show this from ashwathama's perspective which is biased towards karn

Ashwatthama is the most interesting character to me in Mahabharata because he is said to be an incarceration of Shiva and had the most potential among his peers. If you know that there is a classification of warriors in Hindu mythology, especially in Mahabharata. Every incarnation is classified as Atirathi, which is the second-highest ranking of a warrior. Only Ashwatthama had the potential to become a Mahamharathi which is the highest raking of a warrior, as a human. But without his gem, he can not reach that level.

He has to be able to defeat atleast 207,360,000 warriors simultaneously to become Mahamaharathi, which would be unlikely even with the gem.

you mentioned getting into the Ramayana and the Mahabharata, and I thought i'd give some extra pointers (aside from reading the original texts)
back in the mid 90s, there was this anime adaptation of the Ramayana that was SO GODDAMN cool. It's on youtube and it's called Ramayana: The Legend of Ram. Nitesh Tiwari is making a two-part movie series on it too (coming out 2025 i believe), so yeah. but whatever you do, stay a MILE away from Adipurush. it's legit as bad as the Avatar live-action movie. if you want a twist on the story, check out Amish Tripathi's Ram Chandra books.
Mahabharata is a story which i don't think i've really seen in much detail. There have been a few TV serials that came outa while ago, but no really good summarized versions (aside from childrens' books, but i could be VERY wrong). The movie Baahubali (featuring Bhairava's actor) takes a lot of elements from the Mahabharata, so if you can read between the lines, you can see a fair bit of the story. It's also just a BADASS movie, and it had the same effect as LoTR did to the rest of the world (i don't compare people to aragorn. i compare people to Baahubali).

totally agree with you...i mean yeah i get it the character bhairava is supposed to be a good for nothing bounty hunter who just slacks around and dreams of getting a permanent seat in that triangular structure/the complex...but the jokes are really way off the track...like come on he's a bounty hunter man..they should have added a bit more serious tone to his character...but again..the 1st half was just an introduction to the world building/the near end of kaliyuga world..so no complains there
Note: karna is most powerful after Krishna and good person but since he was with bad people side in Mahabharata time he got killed and he did not get respect he should get. So, god wanted him to take birth in ‘future’ i.e, kaliyugam. He will behave in same way but he changes his mind eventually and fight along with good guys against bad people and save the world. That is the concept.

The movie does actually mix a lot of characters together cuz Indian mythology has A LOT OF CHARACTERS. So yeah, you were correct as well. After a reincarnation, you should have the memories of the past lives to know who you were. And in the scene, bhairava was unconscious when karna was active. Reincarnation is the concept of soul which is the same in all lifetimes but the person or personality comes from memory.

You'll be seeing the 7 immortals of the sanatan dharma. Ashwathama is one who's assigned to protect the mother of Kalki, King Mahabali - In the kingdom where kalki will be born, Ved Vyasa- The teacher of Kalki on the Vedas, Parshurama- Teacher of Kalki in the art of weapons, Kripacharya- Teacher of Kalki in politics, Vibhishana- The trusted advisor to Kalki and Hanuman- The devotee of Kalki. As far as the part where Kalki arrives in a white horse from the heavens was explained very well in the movie. Kalki would be concieved when the cosmos is alligned in a certain way, the last time that happened was during the birth of Krishna. As far as Kali goes, Kali would rule all of humanity and would demand the teachings of the Kalyug. There will be very limited humanity left in this world and Kalki would be forced to destroy everything. The world would begin again from Satyug. These immortals would be found in a place called Gyanganj or more popularly known as Shangila. In the second part of the movie, we'll see how Sumati and Bhairav reach Gyangunj and meet the immortals. Kali would be able to corrupt all of humanity by that time and part 2 would be the hope that Kalki would be born and Ashwathama would have completed his task of the Kalyug and would sacrifice himself to save Kalki from Kali. I'm gonna say that those who haven't read or seen Mahabharat and aren't familiar with Indian culture will probably not get this movie. Even if you are familiar with it you probably won't understand it completely if you haven't lived in India for a sufficient amount of time and have talked to people from all stages of society. I felt Kalki was a flex film. I felt they didn't foreshadow Bairava as Karna enough and some things in the ending fight don't make sense. Like a character who can break through stones and stuff gets stuck to those same stones via Dr octopus like robots sent by the villain. I wish they'd given Ashwathama more screen time overall and didn't meander with the jokes when people were literally dying. Also nothing felt like I was in a dystopia; anything dystopic felt like a minor inconvenience at most and none of the characters take damage. I get some of them are Gods in human form but what about the other human characters they don't take damage either. also the points made by The Mythology Guy

Also, I totally agree with you about the Bhairava stand-up comedy that was sub-par, I wish the movie didn't try to be as light-hearted as it tried to be, but the movie needed to succeed economically too, and local Indian audiences who don't know the mahabaratham and are watching it only because they were fans of the actor who played Bhairava (or just wanted a normal Indian-Telugu movie on a grander hollywood esque scale)would have enjoyed the bits that you said were dull, and I totally agree with you that they were dull. I would've loved to have seen more of Sumathi or even the other side characters like Mariam and stuff.
And I'm not trying to defend the filmmakers choices, but I think it was necessary considering that the movie needed to be a huge success in order for sequels to be possible.
In Original Mahabharata written by Vyas ji, Arjuna was the best warrior after Krishna.. Karna and the others were not close enough of his power or skillset .... Rukmi also had the vijaya movie along with karna and Vijaya Bow was not better than Gandiva...
It was stated by many like Lord Shiva, Narad ji, Lord Parshuram and many other rishis that Arjuna was the most superior warrior and better than him was only krishna..

It draws from the events at the end of the epic Mahabharata and the Mahabharata war in which the previous Avatar of Vishnu or Krishna is present as the charioteer and projects it to the next or 10th and final Avatar of Vishnu that is Kalki and to the imagined events of his birth at the end of Kali Yuga or the Age of Darkness. As per ancient Indian scriptures Kaliyuga starts with death of Krishna and ends with Kalki who destroys darkness and restores balance to the world and creation. Comparing it with anything else except a few stylisations is missing the point.
If you really want to get the context read a little into at least the Mahabharata and the concept of yuga though at most places you will find wrong idea of timelines.
The Character of Aswathhama (old man) played by Amitabh Bachhan is a character of Mahabharata who was cursed with immortality for his crime of killing unborn children in the mothers womb. Yes in Hindu tradition immortality is a curse as it prevents you from renewing yourself. Aswathhama lives through 6000 yrs to protect the unborn child that is destined to be the 10th Avatar Kalki and be released of his curse of immortality and bringing his Karma full circle.
Madhava is another name for Avatar Krishna.
If there is anything else you want to know of the scriptural or historical/ Puranic context pl do ask. Yes Mahabharata and Puranas are part of history in the Dharmic tradition and most Indians believe this to be true in parts if at times not whole owing to distortions of time.
The first half had this effect on everyone. Especially the scenes with that Bounty Hunter. I hated those. Except his fight with Ashwatthama and the final fight when the big reveal happens.
Karana is the son of sun god he is invincible becoz he born with suns armor and earrings no weapon can hurt him which is why Indra father of Arjuna went to Karna as a beggar and asked him for his armor which was attached to his body in exchange he gave him his weapon which is called VASAVI SHAKTI which he never got to use coz he was killed

I loved the parallel of Bhairava stopping the wheel on fire which is echoeing Karna's death when his chariot wheel was stuck in mud and Arjuna had to kill him unfairly.

The point about Bhairava's character echoing Karna is on point. I noticed that Karna was known for his selflessness which was because of his adoptive parents raising him with love. In Bhairava's case, his adoptive father tried to sell him off which made Bhairva selfish throughout his life. It's an interesting dichotomy

This is the most Indian reaction to a movie I h've seen from a foreigner! Her character name was Sumati/Sum-80. You can read more about 'Kalki' avatar of Lord Vishnu in Kalki Purana. It also mentions (just like the film) his mother's name as Sumati, birthplace as Shambala and him incarnated at the end of Kaliyug era.

The dark theme does not do too well with the broader indian audience so the tonal shift was done to keep the 'indianess' but it would have been sooo much better.

If you are looking for another story from the Mahabharta, there is this animated film associated with Disney but only shown in India named Arjun: The Warrior Prince. I watched it recently and really liked the animation. I couldn't find an englished dubbed version and the subbed version was spotty on translating I'm pretty sure. I got the gist of the story though so I don't know, watch it if you want something like that 😊
I must tell you this movie does not follow the scriptures properly.
Many Hindus believe in popularized folklores rather than the actual scriptures.
According to Vyasa's Mahabharata (Critical Editions):-
1.) The Gandiva bow was returned to Agni by Arjuna after 36 years of the war. In the movie it is found buried in a desert.
2.) The scene where Krishna curses Ashvatthama did not happen in the battle field, this event occurred near the Ganga river in the presence of Vyasa, Narada, and the 5 Pandavas.
3.) The gem was given to Bhima by Ashvathama himself and Bhima later gave it to Draupadi and later crowned it on Yudhishthira's brow. It was not taken forcefully by Lord Krishna.
4.) Many people like Karna because they do not know the scriptures well. Most of their opinions are based on folklores and legends. Karna is neither a better person, nor a better warrior compared to Arjuna according to the manuscripts (our scriptures very clearly about this). Karna is a straight up villain who was always jealous of Arjuna ever since their Gurukul days. Karna was NOT an outcast in the scriptures. [I can keep going on about this topic]
5.) The story told in the movie about 'Arjuna and Karna pushing back each others chariots in a duel' does not occur in the scriptures. (it is possibly a folklore, but not from the manuscripts)
6.) Karna died in a fair fight with Arjuna. The legend of killing Karna while he was lifting the wheel is not accurate at all.
7.) Krishna always wore yellow silk robes not white and also he wore his golden armour during the battle. (its a minor change)
