    When they say the holy Trinity they actually took that phrase from the watch world. Patek Philippe, audemars piguet and vacheron constantin. That holy trinity has been around for probably 150 years

    • @metal_complex
      @metal_complex  4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I'm gonna say probably not. The term "holy trinity" refers to "the father, son, and holy spirit" originally. It's just applied loosely to any 3 items of "unified glory".

    I love the design of the XM18, but my personal favourite brand of the three CRK, almost entirely because despite them all being at the pinnacle of production knives, CRK is the only one that consistently offers a left hand option across almost all models. As a lefty, I appreciate that, and I honestly don’t understand why Strider and Hinderer seem determined to not even consider a left hand option on any of their models.
    Also, I’m deeply in love with the Sebenza 31; it maintains the clean Sebenza shape, while gaining the upgrades found in newer models (and I especially love that they’re finally using single piece inlays instead of split pieces).
    Also CRKs warranty, especially regarding disassembly, is apparently excellent. Famously, if you disassemble a CRK and can’t put it back together, you can send it back in a bag and they’ll put it back together for you (Spyderco should take note).

      I agree CRK are hands down the better knive. I have an old Hinderer and it is bulletproof. But I bought a new ekipse 3.5 and the quality has really got bad on these knives. My buddy has one and holding them side by side and there are noticeable size tolerance differences in both knives. It seems like their manufacturing is inconsistent with the same knife made at different times.

    • @metal_complex
      @metal_complex  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I have owned 35+ Hinderer knives and handled more from viewers loaning things for channel content. No, the quality hasn't gone down hill and no, it isn't inconsistent. Your experience is just an odd one. Hinderer knives have only become better with time.

    This was an informative and interesting video. I own several Hinderers and Striders, and the Chris Reeve Umnumzaan. I agree that the Strider has the best ergos of the 3. Once Strider became M. Strider, the fit and finish as well as the action improved greatly. I carry either an SNG or SMF Strider most of the time. All 3 are great manufacturers.

  • @Deibodese
    @Deibodese 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Being someone who is too poor to even purchase the replacement hardware of a Hinderer, let alone own all three of these companies’ knives, my understanding of high end knives is purely vicarious. That said, I’m going to put my two cents in anyway.
    You more or less said in this video that these three models are essentially subtle variations on the same theme. I can’t pretend to be smarter or more experienced than the entire knife collector/enthusiast world, but if I were going to dream up a new Holy Trinity it would be Chris Reeve, Rockstead, Olamic Cutlery. Chris Reeve is an undeniable juggernaut in the knife community. The integral titanium frame lock is still considered the gold standard of locking mechanisms, decades after it was invented. I’ve heard people complain that Chris Reeve has never tried to change their design, but I have a simple argument in defense of that: The shark has not changed in millions of years because it already reached evolutionary perfection, and any change just for the sake of change would reduce their ability to survive. I even heard Mike Stewart of Bark River once say that the traditional blade shapes of the early 1900’s work as well today as they did back then. A good design is a good design, no matter how long it’s been around.
    However, the near-universal sentiment regarding Chris Reeve knives is that they are far too classy in appearance, and way too expensive, to put to any actual hard use. They wind up being $450 box cutters. Rockstead, on the other hand, also have a near-universal response. The blade is such a rugged, high-performance design- so completely optimized for the very hardest use imaginable- that people actually want to go out and use them despite their steep price tag. Someone sees a video of how strong a locking mechanism can get, like the Cold Steel demonstration where they literally suspended a junked car from one of their knives and even swung the car back and forth just to add to the stress, but after the initial shock and awe the common post-nut clarity question comes up, “What’s the point in a lock that strong?” Rockstead, on the other hand- go watch one of their cut test demonstrations. THAT, to me, is what a multi-hundred-dollar knife should be able to do. Every aspect of their construction gives them not only mind-boggling edge retention, but the most impressive edge stability I’ve seen in a while. And that’s where most top-dollar knives give me a funny taste in the mouth. You pay for a knife that stays sharp for a long time at the cost of being brittle, which then discouraged use. It seems self-defeating to me. Rockstead supplies the luxury of CRK with the utility you’d be comfortable with.
    Over on the other end of the spectrum is Olamic. I’ve never heard any wild raves about their locking mechanisms or their rugged blades, but on their website they brag that there are over ten million possible customized set-ups. Their slogan is “Never the same,” and their ambition is for every custom order to be totally unique. Olamic cranks up the luxury aspect of high-end knives to eleven.
    Of course, I’m over here speaking entirely from speculation and regurgitation of other people’s opinions. I’m over here at work scraping mineral deposits off of the pipes of leaky toilets, using a $50 limited production run Case knife that I ousted after for two whole years. So I don’t know how valid my opinion really is on the matter. 🤷‍♂️

  • @RedwolfEDC
    @RedwolfEDC 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Hey brother so does the strider you have in the video have any lock stick, lock slip, lock rock or blade play?
    I have owned 6 striders to date and handle maybe 15 more and every single one of them have had one or all of those issues.
    Now I know perfect ones do exist but those are more of a rare exception rather then the rule.
    I have since sold every strider I owned including 2 full customs that costed me well over 2 grand each because the fit and finish was sub par at best and for that price point I just expect better.

    • @metal_complex
      @metal_complex  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Truthfully, this one has no lock rock or blade play, but it does have a hint of stick. I used to really hate stick, but I've recently learned lot more about carbidized titanium locks, (not that I consider myself a pro by any means) and their interaction with the steel tang of the blade. Apparently, some knife makers PREFER a small amount of stick, because it helps prevent slip under heavy pressure. Now, whether or not that's an excuse for slop in tolerances, I don't know. Either way, a small amount of stick has never bothered me, and I can understand the potential benefits. Truthfully, I've experienced stick in knives costing much more. That includes Hinderers, Koenigs, Shiros, etc. To me, this Strider looks and feels nearly perfect. But you've handled more than I have, so you may know better. Hope that helps.

      Metal Complex It was more of a curiosity then anything else, knives are very much about personal preference and I love things that others hate and vice versa so there really isn’t a right or wrong answer , instead there is just “your” answer.
      Striders have amazing ergos and I’m silently hoping for a Reate and strider collaboration because Striders designs and Reates fit and finish would be a incredible combination.
      Thank you for your response and awesome content, I have only ever hit the bell icon 5 times in my life and your channel is one of them.

      Yes yes yesssss.
      I own an SMF and owned a new (last year made) SNG and they both PAIL in comparison to the XM-18 or the 21/25 in fit, finish, and lock up.
      I will NEVER own another strider.
      Blade play, lock rock and detent balls that wear away in year are fucking RIDICULOUS issues to have at $100 let alone $450.
      Not to mention CRK and Hinderer knives have made improvements and innovations to there flagship models... strider knives on the other hand still cant be bothered to carbidize or carburise a lock face, still is plagued by lock up issues , and still have a lanyard hole that has the blade in the path lol.
      It's the biggest, arrogant "fuck you".
      Strider knows he can literally put out the same sub par product and his loyal nut huggers will pick them up like alter boys at a Priest retreat.

  • @hawkshadowoseanacy5171

    Although I agree that these were historically THE three, before kershaw split off Zeto Tolerance and Shirigorov became more well known (I remember trying to get a zt 0777, the Microtech, um.., end around, looking for vids on the knife and having some Russian pretender pop up and feeling like, "damn, everyone's stealing the design", lol).
    Striders just didn't work for me stylistically and the regular CRK design being so popular with rich snobby ppl, I've rearly desired one. Not that a sebenza is a prius (or now tesla) but its kinda similar. "Oh, you don't have five CRK's, well then you have zero idea about what exactly is a quality knife... So, shut it!" No, thank you. And today with Maxace, WE, Reate, etc, CRK's are a harder to justify based on price AND quality (not saying the ultra work person precision isn't worth extra or being made in the USA) but modern cnc machines and pivot bearings, really can take a lot of what used to be long years of necessiry expertise in knfe making out of the equation. Add to that the comparatively slow evolution of these brands and I think they're loosing alot of their 'on a pedestal' status is (has) eroding quickly.
    Now, Id really like to get my hands on a few of CRK's integral fixed blade survival knives from before/as he was transitioning. Oh, that might be wierd, to the US. I like the Insigno blade shape, the not 2x the $, computer graphics and Mnandi. I rairly care for any of the inlays, they, themselves, maybe nice (big oak, meteorite) but the panel design hasn't update and is looking long in the tooth (or is it 'mouth'?).
    About to try my first xm-18 3.5 gen tri way. Have or have had a zt 0562ti and ZT 0560 that bith really impressed me. The internal milling in the 560 was really impressive as was the resale price used after they stopped making them...

      Aye same i have the ZT Hinderer collab with the phosphor washers and the elmax steel for years it is still my workhorse knife its a beast for the price i got it for about 160 pounds uk about 10 yrs ago. Elmax is one of my favourite steels . Also i think it helps to sharpen these blades on decent naniwa stones preferably the OG chosera stones where they were using all magnesium base and i always take my folders to a lower degree to get more slicey cutting- elmax can be taken down to a literal razor and stay strong as hell . They do come a little chunky on the edge but in my opinion many blades do .

    One down (Hinderer on the way), two to go!!!

  • @5OclockSharp

    Striders weren’t that hard to get. I remember buying two from Bladehq when I wanted to, I didn’t have to jump on them spur of the moment. And then I traded a Sebenza for a third one. XM-18s were hard to get, even for people that could order direct. I remember emailing them and it was always months out, so I’d usually forget or not have the money back then as a young E3. I’ve owned an old lock geometry SMF, a new geometry one (2012), and a mini SJ-75, for CRK I’ve had two large micarta 21s, a large micarta classic, a graphic regular, two Umnumzaans, and a large plain insingo. My only hinderer is an XM-18 3.5 swedged spear point. I definitely prefer Chris Reeve, to me they just work the best for my needs. I definitely miss my first SMF, really wish I never sold that one. I definitely wish I got a hinderer back then. I’ll probably get a strider back here in a bit, going to see if I can get a drop, if not I’ll just pay secondary price for the one I really want. I don’t think anyone will ever fit into this category though. There will be many that try, but to anyone that’s been in the game for any length of time, nothing compares to these three.

    Gareth Bull x Peter Rassenti x Koenig? New holy Trinity?

      Well... you've got a mix of custom and production there, but you can have whatever holy trinity you want 👍

    I own all 3 models, and the best action in my opinion is on the Strider, then Hinderer, and finally CRK. I carry the Hinderer’s more though, not sure what that means. But with all the hype about these brands, the CRK models for me are somewhat bland. No doubt they are well built, they just don’t have that wow factor for me as much as the other 2...YMMV.

    It would probably be better said to refer to your topic as the Trinity of knives just saying in reference to three different knife makers!!!😁

    • @metal_complex
      @metal_complex  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, like I said, the words "Holy Trinity" were the exact words used to describe these 3 specific makers. It's very specific.

      @@metal_complex I just want to hear you speak with authority on the subject - I am not super knowledgeable about the "Holy Trinity" and thought I would hear more solid information. While I appreciate that you prefaced that you didn't know everything, when you say "I don't know" or "Correct me in the comments" so frequently it makes me wonder if its information worth hearing. Some of your audience is quite new to the world of knives. Heck - I don't even know what the Strider drama is. It gets brought up in every video about Strider, but no one ever says what the drama is lol

      @@jeffanderson816 Looking up every last minute detail of the subjects I cover isn't something that I do, because I'm long winded as it is, and people would lose interest MUCH faster. A lot of these small details aren't the parts people want to hear about anyway, so I leave gaps, and ask people to correct me if necessary. Also, some subjects, (like the Strider controversy) are intentionally left out so that stupid people don't start dumpster fires in my comments section. The 30 minutes spent covering this topic was more than enough info for most new and veteran viewers. Anything I left out, as you mentioned, can be found on wikipedia. Thanks Jeff.
