Anyway...you'll be happy to know I just got my first Hinderer (Gene XM-18) and I like it a lot. I almost bought a Firetac yesterday because the action made my heart skip a beat. When my XM-18 Gen 6 arrived, the blade was extremely dull and it was way too tight to deploy. Fortunately, these were easy enough problems to fix. After a proper sharpening and tuneup, I really like it. I asked around, and got mixed responses. Some said they had never had any issues, and others said it was pretty normal for Hinderers to have poor QC. I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt and noting that people are much more likely to comment when something is wrong. I'll have a chance to find out if I can ever pick up an XM-24 from a retailer.

      My 3rd Hinderer was a bit rough, back in 2019. I decided to take it apart and clean it out and re-oil it. Screw stripped taking it apart. Bearings were pretty gross. DLT sent me out a new screw and pin since it stripped in it. Fixed it, cleaned it, sold it. I'll get a 4th Hinderer at some point, but it soured me for a little while. I do love them overall, though.

    Still a huge fan of Hinderer knives, largely thanks to you MC. I have 14 that I alternate carrying. Never had any issues with any of them and I usually carry my 3.5 running on Teflon washers. It does have to be just off center in order to still flip open right, but that doesn't bother me. Here lately though I've been carrying other knives. I haven't really been a fan of how Hinderer is handling the whole Transparent Knives thing. I still think they make great knives, but that whole situation has me looking at other brands more than I normally would.

My buddy has one and holding them side by side and there are noticeable size tolerance differences in both knives. Nice to see another Hinderer XM-18 fan. I just wanted to point out I also didn't like the free spinning pivots on these, so coming from a 35 year jewelery repair and diamond setting career I worked out a simple mod that's worked out great. I'd post the direct link, but sometimes the post disappears so you can do a simple google search under:
    "Folding Knife Pivot Interface To End Free Spinning Pivots".
    There are LOTS of clear photos and descriptive text to follow along, and I've done this mod on 3 of my 3-1/2" XM-18 and a few 3" XM-18 knives also.
    Once done, there is NO need for ANY thread lock to be used, because most of the loosening force that tends to loosen the screw is caused by the pivot moving, and the shock of excessive flipping. 🙂 But one this simple small ball bearing mod is done, your thumbnail can adjust the pivot tightness when necessary, and I've found that's only needed after a few hundred or so opening cycles.
    A few other things I've regularly done is remove the flipper on ALL of mine, as it's surely in the way and uncomfortable on the 3" versions,... always digging into my hand in use! It makes the 3-1/2" version more pleasant to use also, and I don't miss it at all. The thumbstuds open the knife plenty quick, AND the knife is "cleaner" and less cluttered without the flipper "erection" left on! 🙂
    You don't often find them new without the flipper, so making them that way is just more practical for me. And truthfully, I can spend more time on them than a factory ever could. So all edges get nicely beveled, and on the finger choils I round them over and polish the choil as comfortable as any high grad "trigger" on a firearm.
    Another "must" for me is once I've taken the knife apart for any of the other mods mentioned, I shorten the pivot screw length to stop flush with the base of the screw slot. So no special tool is ever sgain needed besides a screwdriver (on those examples without having the pivot mod installed and for which you've probably used a bit of thread lock). If you install my ball bearing captured pivod mod, then you can leave the pivot screw full length because your thumbnail will get it apart if ever needed to clean, since again you won't need any thread lock on the screw.
    Anway, if "you" (Metal Complex) would like one of your Hinderer XM-18 knives to have this mod installled, I can do it for you and I'll even pick up return Prioity Mail Insured shipping cost. I'm not looking to make this a business, as I alsready have one. But I've enjoyed your videos, and this is my version of an affordable payback for me. 🙂
    Just google "Ti Rod Tactical" and you can find the contact info on my website if you'd like to have it done. You can check my feedback on ebay also, by typing "Ti Rod Tactical" there. (currently I have 1867 100% positive feedback showing, and I've been on from about when ebay started.)
    Oh, BTW, my current favorite is my DLT exclusive 3-1/2" "Skinny Slicer, NO Choil', and I modded that one by removing the flipper "erection" so now non-flipper. I bought it new several years ago and just took it out to use about 3 months ago. The cutting geometry is about the best that Hinderer makes, and I now use it regularly in kitchen food prep and eating apples daily.
    Cheers,
    Joe T

    Love my hinderer's I've owned 6 great knives for the money. I end up putting all mine on the pb washers and I've had the same trouble getting it adjusted is nearly impossible. they all have eventually worn and have become satisfactory but the bearings just feel better and feel more solid. I really wish they where better bearing not running straight on the ti scales to many downsides to run them over the annoying washers in my opinion. Taco bearing look to fix all the issues I'm just not sure if there worth the cost. Overall hinderers are definitely worth the money they just require some time to get adjusted and customized.
    p.s. on a side note watch out for light detents I have rarely seen it but I have handled and owned one hinderer with an awful detent so light it wouldn't flip it was more of a gravity knife than a flipper. most of the tri ways are dialed in but some are so bad they need to be avoided like the plague.

      I can admit to enjoying my Hinderer as well (have an Eklipse 3.5"). But I have to ask, in you last portion of your comment when you mentioned that the Hinderer was a lil cheaper, I think that only applies if you plan to leave your Hinderer in stock form (which almost nobody ever seems to do). Once you get your Hinderer to look like you REALLY want, it is usually more expensive than a CRK, and on par with a Strider. Just wanted to make sure I was following what you meant.

    • @frankiejdwm_edc1037
      @frankiejdwm_edc1037 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bheart4954 yeah you are right there but Striders sell out in seconds and then go for $700-$800 on secondary(or more) and CRK is now $500 for Plain Jane, and $600 for micarta inlays and they drop less often than Hinderer and sell out just as quick. You can get a Hinderer in your pocket for $425, then work on finding all the extras you need.

    • @bheart4954
      @bheart4954 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@frankiejdwm_edc1037 , I hear yah on the frequency of availability (even though I haven't ran across to many XM-18/24 drops in a minute that don't sell out in seconds as well). I was largely focusing on the total cost, and the average Hinderer owner that I know has at least another $200 wrapped up into their Hinderers with aftermarket mods. The only reason I highlighted the CRK option is that most folks who buy one, are done after they purchase it (not a lot of modding) so in total cost they are still cheaper. Just food for thought.

    still humming and hawing over buying an expensive knife with good aftermarket support for modding. Im leaning hinderer especially after the crk price increase pushing a micarta inlay large sebenza to nearly $900cdn. The xm-18 checks alot of boxes but the flipper tab is abit ridiculous, and there seems to be alot of fit and finish issues. maybe ill just grab a zt or another spyderco XD

    • @metal_complex

    • @charvey635
      @charvey635 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@metal_complex blade play and being off centered with the washers installed is a fit issue. It is supplied factory hardware and should be expected to fit without issue. Having to tune the pivot to get a blade centered is one thing but crankingdown on it so your flipper doesnt flip is a bit much. I have seen several people mention in your comments and on other people videos issues with the knives coming dull or atleast not sharp, thats not a huge deal on its own but its an issue with the finish. Maybe im just nit picking cause its $600+cdn and honestly if a harpoon spanto, or 3.5" warnclif popped up id prob just shut up and throw my money at it...

    • @metal_complex
      @metal_complex  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@charvey635 the issue is that "sharp" and "dull" has wildly varying definitions based on who you talk to. All Hinderers will come sharp enough to slice paper, but you won't get specifics from people who yell "dull".
      Hinderer knives come centered from the factory. If you take it apart, you'll likely have to re adjust for centering if you switch out the pivot hardware. This isn't a QC issue. It's just what happens.

    • @charvey635
      @charvey635 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@metal_complex i get sharp and dull is a subjective issue, possibly people just used to pm2's and bugouts and not knives with alot of material behind the blade, like i said its not a big issue. However you yourself, in this video commented on not being able to get the knife centered when swapping it to washers unless you hammer down the pivot. This make it sound and seem like the Tri-way is a gimmick, and shouldnt be a selling point. Does it work, sure but should a knife this expensive , designed to use washers wobble back and forth unless you hammer down on the pivot? prob not. If I owned one would i feel different possibly. But as an outsider looking in, looking at spending this much money on a user it is something that should be considered. I'm not really trying to be contrary, i legit respect your opnion above all other reviewers. It can be frustrating to get it the way you want it with washers in some situations. Definitely. It just isn't a big enough problem for me to let it get in the way of recommending this knife. If it kept the knife from FUNCTIONING, it'd be an issue. It's just a mildly frustrating element of the tri way.

    I think I’ll stick with my 0562ti I just don’t see this knife as offering anything more than the zt not to mention the zt is using 20cv not s35 20cv is a far better blade steel even though you seem to dismiss that. I’ve been seriously contemplating a hinderer but I can’t just justify it in my mind over the zt granted I’m not as big a fan as you but if I ever do come across a hinder that really grabs my attention I will pick it up also the fact it won’t run good on phosphor bronze kind of defeats the hard use purpose of it. Not to mention the hardware store going on…

      Bearings will work fine in a hard use setting. They don't gunk up like people assume they do. Compressed air will fix minor action issues from debris getting inside the pivot.

They go for twice above retail just because you can't find one in store. The swatch ain't nothing more than a plastic watch bearing the name Omega. This doesn't pertain to knifes but...I had a Hinderer xm-18 gen 4. It wasn't sharp out of the box, and had lousy flipping action.
