  • Jon, Jon and Tommy kick off 2021 by examining the last ditch attempts by Donald Trump and Republicans to subvert November’s election, including Donald Trump's damning call to Brad Raffensburger that leaked in the Washington Post, and efforts by Josh Hawley, Ted Cruz and other Senators to challenge the results of the election. Then, they break down the latest in the Georgia Senate races between Republicans David Perdue and Kelly Loeffler, and Democrats Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock. Last, they discuss what it will take for Joe Biden to fix the Trump administration’s bungled vaccine rollout.

Crooked believes that we need a better conversation about politics, culture, and the world around us-one that doesn’t just focus on what’s broken, but what we can do to fix it. At a time when it’s increasingly easy to feel cynical or hopeless, former Obama staffers Jon Favreau, Jon Lovett, and Tommy Vietor have created a place where people can have sane conversations that inform, entertain, and inspire action. In 2017 they started Crooked with Pod Save America-a no-bullshit conversation about politics. Since then, we continue to add shows, voices, and opportunities for activism, because it’s up to all of us to do our part to build a better world. That’s it. End of mission.

I have never been so angry with members of my family than I have been over all of this. It is beyond infuriating living with people who laugh off what is happening and won't take it seriously simply because Trump and the GOP are bad at the coup and it won't work.
The amount of willpower it takes for me not to scream at a family member who thinks Fox isn't biased but also didn't vote for Trump is exhausting.

My stepdad literally had a stroke when Biden was announced the winner. I'm not saying Trump's defeat caused it, but he had just explained to me that my fellow Democrats would be rioting in the streets after a 49-state landslide for Trump.
He is now recovering and back on Facebook, posting memes he finds on Parler about how Biden will never be inaugurated and saying "get ready for 4 more years, Commies!" My mother is the same, and both are still mad at me for not spending Christmas with my extended family.
You're not alone, is my point.

I think we all feel like screaming after dealing with this insanity for 4 years. It is rough having people you're close to not take it seriously. Many people don't take things to heart if they don't see it as something they can control or something that doesn't affect them directly. They don't realize we can actually DO something besides voting once every 4 years. This is the first year I have donated multiple times, signed petitions, sent letters to my legislators. Wish I had joined a phone bank. Plus side is at least your loved ones didn't vote for him. My daughter and I went from speaking daily to monthly just to avoid conflict. This has messed up many relationships.

I think that it would be a great idea for all government calls to be recorded from here on out. There was this comment on a late night show a little while ago, I think it was Trevor Noah, but it basically said that the average person shouldn’t know who everyone in the cabinet is, we should be able to ignore details like that and assume everything is fine, but if we know who everyone in the cabinet is and every detail about the current political landscape, that’s indicative of something being very wrong. I live in North Carolina, born and raised, and if I’M nervous about the outcome of Senate races in GEORGIA, that really says something about how terrifying and abnormal this situation is

    • @Ohhelmno
      @Ohhelmno 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

I feel this so much. I used to read the news maybe once a week, I went to Obama rallies when I was younger because I felt like history was happening, in a good way, and I wanted to be part of it and support it... but I never really followed politics beyond the Presidency and maybe senate or congress, but just in my state. Since, maybe the Tea Party movement I increased my reading a bit, because it was intriguing how bad these peoples ideas were for average people, but how much the poorest and whitest among us fell hook line and sinker for it despite the fact that the policy was actively bad for many of them, all for the hope that the mining job or drilling job or factory job would come back for them personally, but they didn’t care about other people in those situations in service industries or other low wage low skill jobs, just theirs. Then Trump came along. I read the news every day, I watch political podcasts, I protest, I volunteer to do calls and texts... and it’s like living in the time of Obama, but the polar opposite. We’re in a time of making history, but it’s tearing the nation apart and clawing at the foundations of our democracy and freedom. It’s so surreal and frightening how close we’ve come to the edge, and had we had the misfortune of a Republican controlled house and senate they would legitimately be able and would have pulled off a *LITERAL COUP* and it scares me to no end that our democracy is that fragile.

Yeah. I too have more years behind me than I have ahead of me and I've watched the slow slide down the authoritarian slope that the Republicans are on and I'm scared for the future of our youth. I'm glad younger voters are starting to pay attention but I have to warn you guys of what the next four years are going to end up being about. Please give the Biden administration the time they need to find everything that the Trump administration has f**cked up or sabotaged. Little can be done to progress until these things are found and fixed. Trump and his gang are vindictive and will leave one hell of a mess behind. So please, please be patient. We will all be shocked but not surprised by what the Trump gang has done. So I say again, in this instance patience will be your best friend. I used to be a conservative but I don't recognize the party anymore. I'm a huge fan of Katie Porter and have more of a progressive mindset. Our turn at bat is over and we freakin' f**cked up. It's the young persons future that's important now and I support them wholeheartedly.

1947 NYC managed to vaccinate most of the population for measles because of one case of measles. It can be done, but you need leadership that wants it to happen and you need to provide funding for the states to get it done.
The military manages to vaccinate thousands of sailors and troops. I am a vet, they give massive vaccinations in basic training (they give most vaccines because they can't be certain the enlistees have received adequate childhood vaccines), and every year they mass vaccinate for the flu where a whole base gets vaccinated in a few days. It can be done.

I lived in SE Asia for several decades and this is right out of the playbooks of Marcos and Suharto. In fact much of what trump has done would have made those two dictators proud. Engineer your personal business interests to benefit directly from your position. Put your children and direct family members in your cabinet. Have an election and if you win fine but if you lose discredit the whole thing and just declare yourself the winner. Ruthlessly attack any dissenters immediately. It’s not a surprise that Trump did all this, but it is a surprise that republicans enabled him and that the Americans most harmed by trump’s policies still support him.

I am a 62 year old, highly intelligent, professionally successful Afro Puerto Rican, i.e., a colonial subject of the United States of America. For over a century, Puerto Ricans have been used to advance America's destiny internationally and domestically. A cursory reading of Puerto Rican history shows as much. (Stop talking about us if you don't know us.) It pains me to hear that once again my nation is being mentioned the answer to some of the problems that Trumpism has cast in bold relief. Shame on Pod Save America for thinking that Puerto Rico ought to be used to protect the all freedoms and liberties that Puerto Ricans have never been fully granted even as American citizens.

Just a bit of cultural contrast here: I'm British and the smartest people where I come from never refer to themselves as 'highly intelligent'. That's a label that other people might give to them, but they'll never give it to themselves. In fact it's customary here to call one's own intelligence into question, because . . . well, we all f**k up.

Anyways I left a comment about don't let the fact that trump just threatened and threw mud for an hour distract from that fact that was an hour he could have been yelling about getting more vaccine shipped, into the arms of Americans and Georgians and saving lives.
that goes along the same thought process of "what does impeaching him again do?" theres something else that demands our attention, maybe we can extract justice after the country has returned to 'the new normal'
Last note, its kinda F'd up that national guard showed up to 'keep the peace' but aren't being deployed for the vaccine, and in that same vein, why aren't the engineering corps deployed for more local projects, put the standing army to use besides training how to blow shit up, a national logistics crisis certainly constitutes
