  • Huge Jaboticaba Trees in California are Rare. This Seedling Sabara, was started from a seed 22 years ago and now loads up with fruit after a long period of zero fruit.
I’m using a new fertilizer this year and the results are excellent !

Any issues with die back? And how would you fix that? I have an 8 year old tree that died back 2 ft last summer and half the leaves are yellowing. I heard worms could be the culprit, tried acidifying fertilizers and more watering no effect.

What’s the name of the new epsoma fertilizer you are using?

They are resistant to some frost as they are native to colder areas of Brazil where you have frequently frosts, but you must be careful when they are still small as they are more sensitive to cold.

my from seed sabra is about 12 years it fruited in the container and now that i transplanted it into the ground it stopped again. hearing how long it took for you gives me hope it was flowering due to container restrictions. and i just need to be patient again till it adjusts to the bigger home. Your tree is going ballistic!

I just planted two little trees (they look like little bushes at the moment) last year here in Costa Rica. From what the nursery told me, I can expect fruit in 3-4 years. Hopefully they weren't just trying to make a sale. If they need 2 decades I think they might get replaced with something else before then. They aren't a common fruit here. Most people don't even know what they are or have even heard of "jaboticaba".
On the subject of the one branch not flowering, is it growing above the others and shading the flowering branches? I could imagine that a branch that is getting full sun might be in vegetative growth mode, while the shaded ones might get triggered to bloom. Or maybe the other way around?

Depends on the variety you have. Mine is a seedling Sabara, There are other varieties that fruit in less than 5 years!… Happy Growing!… Jeff
