- In this video, Adam Shafran, of Flying Fox Fruits, is joined by the "Godfather" of Jabuticaba, John Kimber, and John Travis Morton, a rising star among jaboticaba collectors in the USA. In this first part one of two videos, we discuss the history of the growing jaboticaba (Plinias) in Central, FL, and some of John Kimber's experiences, growing this wonderful, underused, rare fruit tree, which could be planted in gardens around the world. Stay tuned for part two, where we will showcase John Travis Morton's amazing collection, which is filled with so many varieties, you may lose count.

What a great legacy he gives the world. Thank you for introducing us to John Kimber, and to his fantastic trees. It is people like you both who will see us all through whatever is to come. I wish I had known of this 20 years ago, but I am now too old to spread the love of these magnificent trees. I applaud you and all who work so hard to preserve and build on this legacy. It is such important work.
I'm from Brazil and Jaboticaba is really important to us, it's even one of our symbols. When sth is very peculiar from Brazil (especially in politics), we say ironically it's a Jaboticaba. My father grew one jaboticaba tree for each one of his kids. It's a shame we had to move when the trees were fruiting. Now a whole neighbourhood feasts on it.
Maybe that was your Dad’s legacy to leave there on your behalf a sweet tasting (memory) fruit of your families time there and a beautiful tree representing your roots. We had that happen with multiple fruit trees my Dad planted in CA. But then we moved to FL and bought a home with three established fruit trees that were delicious. Grateful, for the original planter. Sadly, my Dad passed and FL finally paid my Mom when the trees were actually very old the Citrus industry cut them down during the time the industry was suffering from citrus canker. But the trees had lived a long good life and were pretty much done.
@@SouthFloridaSunshine do you find that citrus canker disease odd, almost like it was spread deliberately to decimate the orange grove crops of Florida?

I purchased a small one in a 4 in pot, it lost all it's leaves, got from guardino's nursery. It looks dead, but don't want to give up on it if it might come back. Should I get another one, the price has gone up quite a bit.
We have one for 6 years, good size and fruited once really well but since then just a dozen or so fruits per year nothing. Costa Rica.

I just started, red one, it's in a 3 gal pot, but leaves are not green as the ones in this video.
Epic video. I just got some grimal and have been growing 5 other red jaboticaba for over a year. I have picked up from your I videos that drainage is very important but what would you recommend as a organic fertilizer? for instance would blood and bone be ok..
i just use espoma products really, but u want something that is low in nitrogen and higher in P and K

My Gma SurinamCherrys was growing in buckets an busted out after rooting into the ground they are giant now. I have some Pomegranate that will probably do the same thing in big pot's they rooted into the ground.

Those trees look so cool. Fruit all year. Love mamey, jackfruit,mangoes. I love homemade mamey ice cream tastes insane. I use 50 % raw organic cow milk and 50-60% mamey fruit. Well if you put more mamey it will spoon out decent with like a 60 % mamey & 40% raw organic cow milk and tastes insanely good!!

Ohh wow this is awesome. I traded some dragon fruit and this guy in California gave me some "red" from seed. I'm in southeast central Florida. Definitely appreciate the length you guys went through to save this tree. And excited to grow it.
This question is for godfather. What is the best way to prune the jab and should all the limbs be cleaned off of the little twigs? A lot of the pix of jab trees I have seen loaded with fruit all the limbs appear to be very clean of small twigs. Tku

I think he's mixing all sorts of premade mixes that are on sale, he uses pro mix and peat moss and other stuff, I'm sure...I see some sand in his pots, I think he using compost too
What is the best soil mix for blue jaboticaba?
peat moss and perlite, use about 95% peat moss the rest perlite and whatever else u wanna throw in, mycorrhizae and Fert
What about ocean minerals for fertilizer ? I mean organic gardens love ocean minerals. Maybe in Brazil Colleges have information for the best soil composition.

My daughter bought one and the leaves are turning brown on the edges. Do you have any ideas we need to do to help it? We live in Texas and have it in a 14” pot, zone 8B
sounds like heat or water issues, the water maybe hard...give it shade and try to improve water quality, making it acid or less salty and give the tree a dish to reduce the needs for watering, and keep in shade for hottest time of the day, morning sun is good
Me: sees a Jabuticaba video and immediately start to salivate - even before the video is open.
It has been over 10 years since I last had a jaboticaba fruit and I’m dying to have some again.
Jabuticaba trees are heavy thirsty plants. The more they drink, the bigger and healthier their plants will be and bigger and sweeter fruits will be. They start producing after 10 years, although hybrids can produce earlier or if they are cuttings from mature plants. I had a Sabará, the one with larger near dollar sized fruits on my backyard. My grandpa had a few, and this is the best memory I have from childhood: to stick around hearing his stories and eating such delicious fruits, sometimes on the top of 30+ ft tall trees.
Also, avoid gripping the trunk or branches since that’s where the fruits come from. You may wipe off the still nearly invisible stems and reduce your crops.
Seeing the other fruit trees also brings me memories. Carambola, Atemóia, man… add a Cajueiro (cashew tree) and I will find a way to become your neighbor!
For the record, restinga is not a plant but a biome of sandy, acidic and poor nutrient soil from the East region of Brazil, with different species of shrubs and trees and none are called “restinga”.
Kudos for keeping a tiny portion of Brazil on your backyard.

That’s amazing!! So how do you recommend pruning these ? In the winter to a pickable height or just let them grow ? Also do they prefer part shade ? I’m in zone 10b . Thanks !!!

I’m in Grant. On a coastal sand ridge. There’s an area of the property that is low with very rich, black muck soil that stays nice and moist year round. I have a guava and a jackfruit seedlings that are phenomenal
They’re only about two years old and the guava has already fruited. The jackfruit is just now flowering with male flowers. I have young live oaks that run perpendicular to these trees that partially shade them.
My question would be if this would be a good area for jaboticaba? There’s a large 4 year old rainbow eucalyptus in the southeast corner that provides dappled shade in the spring.
But in summer, there’s more direct sunlight
The soil is slightly acidic. About a 6.5-7 closer to the eucalyptus.
