It is rare to see a game where the lead keeps going back and forth the entire game. Immense respect for NZ, last 10 minutes was some of the most intense rugby ever. Most penalties was for offside, tackler not getting out of the way after the tackle, making it difficult for tackled player to release the ball on the ground. I recommend watching the 2019 RWC final and also Japan success at the 2019 RWC. Promise it will not disappoint

Also, the games between SA and NZ are more important to both teams than winning the Rugby Championship itself, it's a friendly rivalry though, they don't hate each other (NZ and SA are historically the two best teams in the history of the sport)

  • @SafferPOV

    Not sure if commented on:
    - Although the ABs had already won the championship, the #1 world ranking was on the line. After the win the Boks moved back into the #1 spot
    - The penalty at about 73' for not releasing in the tackle was actually incorrectly given. While a tackler has to release the tackled player before playing the ball Frans Steyn actually stripped the ball before the tackle was completed (player's knees/body or the ball touching the ground). This was why Steyn was so glad for the last penalty to the Boks, he thought he had cost the Boks the match.
    - As to Barrett's kick pass for the try, part of the #10s job is spatial awareness as they are normally the playmakers and they will scan the field before they even get the ball to evaluate their options. In this case he saw Sevu Reece out wide with the Bok defenders compacted more infield, giving Reece a potentially clear run, which was why he went for the kick pass. These guys gave secret signals, known only to the team, and in this case either Reece signaled to Barrett that there was an opportunity or Barrett signaled to Reece what he was going to do, if the opportunity remained

At 6:36 I clearly heard the ref say, "We are going back for the advantage."
Advantage is something we've not discussed before today.
In American football, after there is an infraction, the ref will ask the non-offending team, "What do you want? The penalty or the play?" That can be done because play automatically stops every 3-10 seconds.
Rugby is different. Basically the ref decides for you. Say the other team knocks the ball on and you scoop it up with clear space in front of you. The last thing you would want is for the whistle to blow, stopping play and allowing the erstwhile offensive team to organize their defense just so the ref can give you the ball that you already had.
When the ref sees an infraction he will say "Advantage (non-offending teams color) Black." He also points towards them. He then allows play to continue to see what develops. The more egregious the offense, the non-offenders need to gain a larger advantage before the foul is forgotten.
Teams hearing that they have an advantage know that now is the time to bring out the higher risk/higher reward tactics because if they eff it up they will still get a do over.
When the ball is kicked anyone that is in front of the kicker is offside and must retreat to an onside position before entering play. Being offside isn't the penalty. Interfering with play while offside is.
What puts a player onside is when an onside player gets further upfield than the offside one but that is only if the offside guy is making an effort to get onside. Usually the kicker will chase his kick but anyone that is onside can do this. You can often see the wing far away from where the ball is headed sprinting upfield to do this.

Once there is a penalty the ref plays advantage and if the attacking team cant score from it or isn't making any ground the ref goes back to the penalty advantage on the mark where the penalty took place. So when you were trying to figure out what the penalty was for it was actually a few phases before that ruck.

@9:25 Yes correct, the tackler and the tackled player should roll away once they're on the ground. But in this case the referee made an error as the green tackler ripped the ball from the black player mid tackle. So the green player was trying to place the ball he had stolen from the black player and the black player was at fault for playing the ball. But the referee didn't see this and penalised the green player in error. That is why the green player was throwing his arm out in protest after the call.

When Barrett cross-kicked at 3:46 that was his reaction to the fact that the AB's had a three man overlap on the right, he would have to a be a really unobservant fly half to be oblivious to that!

    @dusty7933 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Best matches to watch AB vs the Boks. So a try is 5 points and the kick after is 2 points. A penalty and a drop goal is worth 3 points. Most penalties are for offside play as a match is so fast that its difficult sometimes to stay onside. If the for instance the flyhalf kicks the ball the chaser must be behind the kicker till the ball left his foot. I can explain a lot more but it will take very long.

5 points for try, 2 points for conversion, 3 points for penalty (place kick), from wherever the penalty is committed, 3 points for drop goal (ball must hit ground first before being kicked), off-side rule applies at all times (attacking player can't be in front of the ball), the penalty given to SA, which you queried, was because AB defender was lying over the ball (he must roll away, if he can), likewise another one you asked about: the tackler must release tackled player, before going for the ball (but he can rip it off the player if he is not on the ground). When the ball is being contested in the air, you can't tackle the player who is catching the ball whilst he is in the air, (he must land on the ground first.) For the third AB try, SA had a line out near their own goal line, but the AB forwards contested the ball which was spilled, then bounced into the hands of the AB who scored in the corner. This also raises the question of the knock-on, you can't do this, if you do, the referee awards a scrum to the opposition. The scrum is a 'grey area' (because it is difficult to see what is going on!), this is a good example of the role of the referee: how he interprets the rules, which leads to many arguments about whether it is a penalty or not. This is just the tip of the iceberg, but I hope this is of some help to you with further broadcasts. For an American AFL man, I am very impressed with your efforts. Keep it up and good luck! (PS. In my opinion the greatest game of rugby in modern times was the final one between SA and the ABs in 2013 Rugby Championship. You can find it on you Tube.)

The penalty at about 9:15 was actually a mistake from the ref as the green player dispossessed the black player mid-tackle. So the penalty should've gone the other way. Just clarifying as you learn the rules. It's tough sometimes cos even refs make mistakes.
The rule is you can't play the ball on the ground, so the ref assumed thats what the green player was doing, but by the time the 2 hit the ground, green was in possession of the ball... You can see him pleading his case to the ref after whistle was blown

If he holds on too long the opponents aren't being allowed to compete and its a penalty. On the other hand; if he can keep posession and jerk loose, and get to his feet he can keep bulling forward and even score.

Also a penalty is 3 points and the distance also is not always the sane depending on where the infraction happened on the field. And the penalty that you refured to, if a tackeler, tacjeks his opponent he is not allowed to play the ball on the growned... But he is allowed to play the ball if the tackeler stand up on to his feat after he tacjeled if ge us quick enough. Hope that helps.

Your query about offside - it IS an infringement of the laws. And that wing was half a step onside, if the flyhalf (no. 10) had taken a quarter of a second longer, the try would have been disallowed. Any player in line or behind the kicker is deemed on side - any ahead of the kicker are offside. luckily, the 22m line was right there to show that the Barrett was marginally ahead of Reece when he kicked the ball.
The game wasn't just for pride, the world's number 1 spot for international teams was up for grabs, the winner of the game holds the title. Sure the actual tournament was out of SA's grasp, but there was still a hell of a lot on the line for them to play for.

A penalty kick (and free kicks) are taken from where "it is awarded or anywhere behind it on a line through the mark and parallel to the touchlines." The reason a kicker may choose to take it from further back is to reduce the angle to the posts but he/she has to stay within range.
For the penalty at 7:29 I wish they had shown the referee's reaction because from the only available angle it was not clear. If the ball was out and the scrum half played it then I cannot see any reason to give a penalty. But these things can be really split-second decisions.

Is he has his arm outstretched behind his back then he is playing advantage and may bring back play to the spot of the foul if he deems there is no advantage. Sometimes this is a minute or so later and when he blows the whistle the ball might be many yards away from where he is bringing play back to.

When someone kicks the ball during game play (like the 10 did in the first half) only someone who was behind him when he kicked it would be on side.

7:45....when you slowed it all down and tried to figure out what the penalty was for.
You wasted your time because the penalty was awarded for something that happened before that.😁
Try to catch the ABs v USA next weekend bro.

@@BlakeHC Algood bro. The only way to get to know penalties is to watch a full game. Usually explained and replayed, but some are very obvious.
USA v All Blacks will be a rout..but a good way to learn.

Yeah the winger can run at the ball as long as he was behind the kicker when he kicked it.

    Rugby Terminology
    ADVANTAGE
This is yelled by the ref to make it officially known hes spotted and infringement (a cause of a penalty)
"ADVANTAGE" allows the play to continue *if it is in favour of the non offending team. Once there is no progression or the offense infringes themselves, the ref would take the ball and play it back at first infringement.
This is where the Offense would opt for (1 of 3 decisions) but in these cases, went w a penalty kick to snag 3pts. *At these initial points on the field where the penalty occurred is where the penalty kick is posistioned.
One of the other penalties you were unsure of is when the tackler is unable to play for the ball. Once the tackler has completed a tackle and successfully brought the ball carrier to the ground, the tackler must release the ball carrier. To be eligible to play for the ball, (*either) Player must get back to their feet. Easier said then done cos most likely theres a ruck over you.
    Big Ups from NZ mate.

Ja, many of the penalties are against guys trying to slow the ball down on the ground illegally ... impeding the flow of the ball .... naughty hands in rucks....obstruction in a sense .. exct. exct.

Players behind the kicker are onside. Those not behind need to be 10 metres away from the player who fields the ball unless the kicker puts them onside.

Penalties are always taken from the spot where the foul was committed, so obviously they're not always the same distance. Conversions are always taken from the 22 metre line, but in a line with where the try was scored, so they are equidistant from the goal line, but not necessarily the goal itself: a try scored next to the touch line presents a harder target than one scored behind the goal. I hope this clears this issue up a little, and furthermore I'd have to say the USA has a respectable record in international rugby, bearing in mind it's very much a minority sport there. Countries like South Africa regard rugby union as their Number 1 sport, and have done so for years. It's always disappointing to see your own country being soundly beaten in a sporting contest, but it's certainly no disgrace in this context. Personally I admire the US football (soccer to you), and the USA Eagles for consistently performing at a higher level than almost all foreign observers expect. The future looks good for both sports in the USA - look at the success of the American women in soccer! As an afterthought, I forget his name, but the USA had a winger, a black lad who ran Olympic times as a sprinter, and I watched him trashing Brian Habana for speed, he left him for dead...

You see even great teams like South Africa, England, France, and Australia rarely get wins over New Zealand, any win against the All Blacks means so much for any team.
I'm pretty sure only 7 countries have ever beaten them.

I wouldn't try to understand the refereeing in this game... the standard was atrocious (fairly normal for the current crop of northern hemisphere refs) and I think both sides were getting frustrated.
I saw this video (th-cam.com/video/M8wOJNzK90U/w-d-xo.html) gave a really good breakdown of a number of the calls and it helps to explain many of the laws for those who don't know them.

We should've won both those games, if not for our poor coaching decisions. The South African public called for his head. Then we won this game after the 100th. Sometimes the wise guys need to get a reality check from the public.
