  • Martin Devlin chats with former All Blacks halfback and Sky Sports rugby commentator Justin Marshall following the All Blacks' 26-10 loss at the hands of the Springboks in Nelspruit. That makes it five losses in six tests and three in a row for the New Zealand men. But Marshall still has hope that this team can play better.

I was walking with my girlfriend when a knife welding man wanted our wallets threatening to stub us. Instantly I run away and my girlfriend lost her wallet. When I caught up with her later, she was traumatised but also angry at me. I said to her: “ I thought that was my fastest run this year. Can we at least celebrate that?”. That’s how these media clowns are defending Foster’s statement.

New Zealand commentators keep bringing up fitness and that the Springboks were 'gassed'. I really don't understand this, the constant line speed and dominating the subsequent collision takes massive amounts of energy. And the Springboks seems to turn that line speed up in the last 15min of every game (so do the Sharks). And for those who would bring up Trevor's first half sub, look at Angus Ta'avao's face and body after the first scrum he won at the end of the first half; he was done too.

Boks have a simple philosophy about their front-rowers specifically. related to heart-rate, % of original fitness level, and other factors. If a player goes below that, off they come. No matter if it's one minute before, or two minutes after the break. Dragging a player to half-time for the sake of it does not make sense anymore. Fittest (freshest) players on the field at all times.

This All Blacks team looks like they have no "connection" with those around them. To watch the All Blacks running into each other while attempting to run a backline move, or 2 guys bumping into each other when going up for a high ball just shows the lack of communication and/or connection between the players. This, I believe, is down to the lack of an apparent game plan, or a plan that the players can play to or believe in. Whatever the reason, I've never seen the All Blacks play so individually. A star team will always beat a team of stars, and at the moment the All Blacks are the latter.

    • @lockk132

The backline need to go off and run on a paddock with no ball.just jog round chatting to each other do sprints in combination.Running off the hip running change of angles develop little subtle signs or words indicating change of direction.then give them a ball and have them do the same ,but practice short short long passing ( same as footy draw in the defenders).practice passing into space for the receiver to run on to(far too much stutter steps to wait for the ball).line up at 30 odd degrees to be able to run on to the ball and run in pairs for short flick balls..have the fullback and wing practice running off each other ,running opposite to the backline movement to change direction of attack.failing all that go and watch the 1986 Springbok backline ...best ever on the planet ever( im a nzer)

Dont think the ABs have ever quite fluctuated down this far before. Even in '98 when we lost 5 in a row there wasn't the furor as now, because then we always looked like it, sometimes losing to a last minute penalty, still were always capable of breaking the advantage line. The ABs have the history they have because they NEVER settle for second best EVER. The players in the past has said they'd never have it any other way, that fear of losing was like the fear of God. @Nicholas Balasoglou The Boks' system is tailored perfectly for their players, or at least for the players the selectors have chosen and developed over the past ten or so years. It seems limited when compared with the more expansive game the likes of France and New Zealand play, but that it is only because it is more fan friendly, not because it is necessarily more successful. If running rugby won you everything, the Boks wouldn't be tied with the ABs on three world cups (with one fewer attempt I should add) and England wouldn't be the only northern hemisphere side with a Webb Ellis to its name. Union would also be a more uniform affair, closer to league in outcomes and approach and less interesting because of it.

In fairness, I understand that it's tough for the AB's fans seeing their team play like this but teams like France, Ireland, SA and even England have been constantly improving at all levels of the game (U20's, 7's & club level). Removing bias, can the new zealand honestly say the same? The NZRU really need to take a hard look at their structures and see if they're still fit for purpose. Yes Foster isn't the best coach for the role, but the AB's dip in form is far from his fault.

Sometimes you have to endure pain for a better overall product. NZ’s impact on the game should not only depend on them winning. Winning alone makes one lazy in thought, decision making, genuine excitement and ultimately results (in the boardroom too). The transitioning of the ball from the ruck and breakdown is predictable to the defence, therefore they are able to target that area. The All Blacks need to vary their attack in this area. The runners needs to be running onto the ball and before they get tackled they need to turn and present the ball to the next runner. We’re going too early on the ground as well. Too many players are running front on and get isolated and it’s too easy for them to get their hands on the ball. Little steps at,a time and protect the ball. Please don’t run the ball from the 22m line, this is basically rugby knowledge but needs to be reminded.

I honestly feel for NZ supporters and the ABs teams, it's not a nice place to be in when u struggle with form and you lose 2,3 or more games in a row, it's sucks big time. Yes it's obviously nice to beat the ABs as a South African, but I would prefer beating a strong AB team compared to a not so strong one, cause we always throughout decades of rugby history between our 2 countries have measured ourselves vs the ABs to see how good or bad we are at any given time when we play the. So now that the ABs r struggling, I'm making the argument how good is the Boks really atm even if we beat the. Are we really that good or is the ABs really that bad and tbh I frankly don't know. Hence we Bok supporters want the ABs back to full strenght hopefully soon. We prefer u when u good as fck måte lol, vs when u struggle. And many South Africans r rooting for the ABs believe it or not seriously, cause we need a strong AB team in world rugby, rugby is poorer when the ABs struggle, it's just a freaking fact guys. I have massive respect for Justin Marshall - he is articulate and knows rugby better than most from a technical point of view. He has served Nz rugby well. BUT, I feel we, the NZ public, are all being shovelled bollocks. If we are all going to tip toe around and be friends with everyone then nothing will change. Someone stand up and make the hard decisions and pull this AB team out of its pity party and tell them to man up. It’s time to get in there. Enough with the sympathy - fozzy has taken us down a path that is killing the brand. When you have 3 brothers in an AB team, and no other people in NZ can fill those positions except these 3 brothers, then all this says to me is that the NZRU is full of NEPOTISM. Get the best of the best, get the best talent and coaching team
And take back our position in World Rugby. Someone please show some leadership and stop this nonsense and make the hard decisions before people stop buying tickets to rugby games.

New Zealand is in danger here of doing what we did wrong in the Rudolf Straeuli era. That ushered in a downward spiral that lasted many years. If they start sacking coaches as we did sooner rather than later the situation will get worse. It took Jake White to steady the boat and even after White we still suffered, but by that time we were kind of getting use to it.

NZ for many years got away under Henry and Hansen combining quality rugby with cheating rugby. They realized this was possible due to pathetic refereeing. Examples year 2017 Albany NZ v SA Nigel Owens allowed NZ to enter rucks from the side 48 times. At Wellington 2018 when SA won Owens allowed NZ to enter rucks from the side 43 times. Now you still have to add, diving in, not support own wait, sealing off, entering behind line-out jumpers back, running past rucks taking out incoming opponents. This is not allowed Foster and present NZ team. So NZ has lost a tremendous lot of scandulous fire power !!! To be back in line NZ will just have to improve on what is legal in the game. Also W.Cup 2019 NZ made 41 penalizeable mistakes versus SA and Jerome Garces only penalized them 4 times. Foster has not got this luxery !!!
Rassie was crucified for exposing that rugby has become the most corrupt sport on the planet. It just became to much. SA will also not forget that NZ-landers decided what Rassies punishment should be for exposing the most scandulous corruption !!!

If Ussain Bolt ran at 9.54 sec. for 100 m the ball could not drift 5.5m forward, and Cody is not that fast. Is there anybody who could do the calculation for us ?

Agreed. But that is a massive 'if', and I think it will come back to bite the Boks when it matters most. Your 12 is not very good. His passing is poor and he lacks the instinct that some of your other backline stars have. If you had a good 12, and if Pollard was the player he used to be at taking the ball to the line, I think you would be number one right now. That 26-10 scoreline would have been more like 46-10. Folks are bagging that All Black backline, but they've been playing behind the gainline nearly every test. Forwards win tests, the backs decide by how much. This Bok forward pack with this All Black backline would put everyone to the sword. There would be no misfiring backline anymore with the gainline won. I'm expecting a worse beating at Ellis Park. It could get ugly, but things will get better should that ugly pill eventuate.
