  • The Job Market in 2023 - What To Expect and How To Take Advantage Of It. Welcome to 2023! 2022 was very eventful for the average job seeker and employee. Now we face a possible recession and with it an unstable job market. What can we expect this year? In this video I give my opinion on what will happen.

I work in a very large enterprise. As the economy continued to deteriorate, I paid close attention to keywords and phrases that the CEO and senior executives repeatedly used during employee meetings (restructuring, being responsible with the budget, finding efficiencies, etc.). In the last two quarters, I saw that the IT budget (development and enhancement) was cut, and with it, a significant portion of IT talent was let go. Active hiring slowed down, and it was clear (to me) that Q1 2023 would be when the deepest cuts are going to occur. So, in Q4 2022, I began to test the hiring market and - and I happy to say - that I acquired a more senior position with an increase in salary and - more importantly - in a company whose corporate culture and values align to my own. As I depart my current employer for this new opportunity, I wish my colleagues the very best. But, as things look right now, the next three months will be uncertain.

There are still a _few_ companies that like that -- but they are extremely rare. I worked for Disney for nearly 9 years and at the 5 year mark, someone told me "ah, you just got here." - they were celebrating 30 years with the Mouse. Anywhere else, at 2 years - I was considered the old timer. Either fortunately or unfortunately, the world ended and Disney put me on furlough for a year - covering my side of the "benefits" but not able to pay me a salary. While I could get by for a couple months without an issue, I wanted to keep current with my skills so I worked for someone else while also on furlough (no rules against it). When Disney finally called me back, they offered me a different role (same pay) but the technology just wasn't as cutting edge - so I remained with my new company. I was fully remote with no expectation to return to office (still the case) and got a nice raise out of it too.

I don’t think employers are going to get most of what they want out of employees at this point. They want employees to work for the lowest possible wages and morph multiple positions into one, force them into a brick and mortar building that they have not sanitized after 3 years of sitting and sacrifice their all for them when year over year they get minuscule raises, no real bonuses while they watch the C suite get richer and richer?! Employees are not rolling over to be used like that now. Companies cannot exist without employees. Even Elon Musk had to try to rehire some of the people they laid off at Twitter. I think Employees getting some of what they want is just going to escalate even more.

You raise an excellent point about needing to cautiously interpret the BLS jobs report findings! I'd add to that as someone who until recently worked in the BLS as a survey enumerator that one reason the job numbers are misleading is because the sample sizes are incredibly small and only becoming smaller. Obtaining data for a voluntary survey was always difficult but now with so many companies short-staffed response rates, esp. for the companies that are struggling the most, have fallen off a cliff. Response rates for the Job Openings and Labor Turnover survey (what people are citing when they reference # of job openings) went from 60% at the start of 2020 to 30% today. That's having an effect as we're seeing with the reliability of the data, since it just came through the quarterly census of employers that BLS overshot job growth in Q2 2022 by over a million jobs! Beyond just misinterpreting the data, we need to consider that without a representative enough sample size the underlying data is itself useless.

Since the boomers are retiring soon in these years, companies should keep hiring. Overall, world population will retract, and things will get rough for the world as millions of Chinese retire at 55. The takeaway is that if you lay off employees now, you will see trouble in the future. These are the years boomers are retiring, and there is no generation just by the numbers to replace them. The boomer generation was highly productive, and it will be very interesting to see how bad the labor market is going to get for employers.

I have a fully remote positions now. Even before the world ended, I had a hybrid model before that was the name for it - I simply negotiated the ability to work from home 1-2 days per week so I could actually get work done, then I would go into the office for meetings and collaboration. This has been a fairly common thing in IT for the past 15 years. I'm actually considering relocating, but it is _possible_ I won't be able to keep this remote gig forever, so I'm looking for a place about a hour outside a major metro in case I need to return to a hybrid model if I absolutely had to. I'm actually working on a side gig that might turn into a fulltime deal - if I can only figure out how to get health insurance. If the "remote bubble" finally bursts (I hope it doesn't) - I hope to be independent of the labor market.

I don’t think the job market will skew towards the employer side completely because there has been a rise in unionization and worker organizing due to poor corporate practices. My job situation is up in the air. I may or may not have a job within a few months or by the start of next peak season. There aren't any other companies I want to work for in eastern PA since they're all the same and require their slaves to live to work. Eastern PA does seem to be a slave mentality environment. Working a salaried job for 60+ hours a week is expected as a minimum and if you do less than that because of family, then you're not a "team player". I was in engineering management before I got let go because I had an ailing Father-in-law on hospice and I was let go just a week before my approved FMLA kicked in. Sadly he has passed away, but now no one seems to want to hire anywhere. I see the same job postings get reposted for months as they cannot find a workaholic.

I'd probably have cross-trained over to mechatronics since I do believe that is about to become the next big thing. I'm in the trucking industry and based out of the West Chester area. The slave mentality seems to be way too common east of the I-35 corridor. The union companies out here are slave drivers as well. What good is a high paying salary when one's sanity and physical health are on the line? Yeah, the free healthcare is nice and all but we both know that when an employee starts using it a bit too much, the insurance carrier will tell the company to can the person since they've become way too high risk.

IDK if there's any truth to this, but sometimes I feel like these buzzwords are a bit akin to the millennial-bashing the media used to love to do, but a bit less directly. Like "Quiet Quitting" already had a word -- Work to Rule, or sometimes just Doing Your Job. "Quiet Firing" is a rebrand of constructive dismissal. Maybe I'm just cynical because I feel buzzwords take away from addressing the problems themselves.
Being in tech especially, I definitely feel nervous about taking a job at a different company. For a lot of industries, the reality is Boomers are retiring, or going to in the next few years. I expect there will be less of an "employer's market" than we had pre 2020 when the dust settles. But tech is one of those industries where a lot of jobs aren't, or are only needed until they're automated. My guess is senior-level rolls will still be in high demand, but it'll be even more rough for folks early in their career.

Seems like I picked a terrible time to try and relocate. I'm averaging 2 recruiter calls a day in the last 2 weeks and everyone goes silent. Most of the positions show on sites that its been hanging out there for months and months. We've agreed on everything the employer is looking for and then nothing happens afterward. Is this all just resume "banking"? Building up an inventory of resumes so when the job market does pick up they have some "back fill"?

"Company loyalty" isn't something entirely on the employer. Back in the day, it wasn't as easy or convenient to change employers because job postings were not as easy to find as it is now, so employees do take some of the blame.
Having said that, it's kind of nice. Layoffs get rid of poor performers, I don't know about you but I hate working with unengaged people who don't pull their weight. Nowadays you can also quit your job and come back. Back in the day, moving to another firm would have you branded as a traitor and it wasn't likely that you'd be hired back if things didn't work out with the new company.

I live in the San Francisco Bay Area and company loyalty is not really a thing here. This is hustle culture and everyone is looking for the next cool thing to chase or to be a part of. The exception is if one works for a big sexy company like SALESFORCE or Google. It’s unusual to meet someone who has been at the same job more than 2 or 3 years, especially if they are under 40 years old. The free agent mind set is alive and well. Come here if you want to hustle and make a lot of money but I have to say there is a reason it’s called the Salt Mines. It will wear on you deeply after 15 or 20 years. By the way, when you said getting laid off just before Christmas was sad I personally thought it was awesome. It gives you total free time to not worry about that big project. And you have a great job market to go hunting in. You may not get you number one pick but you will not go hungry if you are in tech. Job openings are alive and well here, if you can handle the dog eat dog, high rent hustle. You will have roommates even if you make over $100k. If you are still reading my rant I sincerely wish you the best. We are all just trying to make a nice life out here.

It's despicable to see all those employees acting so desperate and @ss kissing. If you are valuable and have skills then you should not care about losing your job because you can always get another one or start your own business. If employees accept low standards or toxic work culture then they don't have much value or skill as they are willing to sell their dignity for a pay check.
