  • Hello! o/ Back in 2011, i created this video, which is combination of various live footage from 1978 (Mostly from Montreal and Osaka) and the soundtrack is taken from a pre-fm source of a radio broadcast from a show in Houston.
    Looking back 5 years later, i am not satisfied with this video anymore as i used to be in 2011. However, many people still enjoy it, so keep it on this channel.
    There are still lots of plans in my mind, one of them is to complete my project "Genesis Live in Concert 1978", which can be found here:
    • Genesis Live in Concer...
    Haven't worked on this stuff since more than two years. :O

      I know, wouldn't we all kill for a Blueray quality video version of Seconds Out, maybe with a Steven Wilson 5.1 remix. I don't care if Varilights weren't invented yet... the sheer energy of those performances still blows me away. I would metaphorically give my left nut for that live concert experience.

    I often wonder if artists know how much meaningful happiness and long lived memories they provide. Does Phil or Steve or Peter go to sleep at night satisfied that their work continues to thrill some of us even now? They should. They did a good thing. It sounds trite and silly to some but music and art is the gift that keeps giving, more so than any “thing” else could. There is no physical possession that can last through the ages like the music we grew up with. I saw this show at Berkeley Greek Theater-one of the best nights of my life.

      yes, artists know. We were made to think again and again, Dan. But - maybe - this can change. As we learned not to need religion, we're about to learn, that this single one person to love, "just to hear your call", does not exist beside the own brain. I would like to talk to you and me and all of those great musicians about that. Roger Waters asked for the live we really want, and imagined a woman at the stove... "I would be afraid to find somenone home..." I want to travel to where a guest is welcome only. Sorry, if I did not match memories - I can't anymore. Want to get ready for different quests.... but, posts as yours will be always a very good start, so I decided to post here, now, and with my honest devine, not beeing able to give a better start to somenone like me. Finally: I'm a musician too, who switches between playing and listening, getting more and more respect to me and anyone who plays live on stage or in the streets... yes, artists know! look: th-cam.com/video/9ThB1n6ay1Y/w-d-xo.html

      How can you forget to mention Tony Banks. The king of chord progressions. Many people don't realize how much of the music was actually written by him. Afterglow being one. Aside from the later writings of Phil Collins, Tony Banks was the heart of Genesis. He's one of the greatest all time keyboard players.

      I hear you! I saw Genesis a few times in the 70's. One of them was the Seconds Out tour - in Oakland Coliseum. Tickets cheap. Absolutely fantastic show. All I did was walk around on the floor buying loose joints and hit off them, then pass around etc... I did this the entire concert. Walk though the crowd passing around joints. LOL I don't think I even looked at the stage once. The sound was great and I kept running into people I knew. Those were great times I must say. Afterglow stopped me dead in my tracks. I remember it to this day. Thank you Genesis band for all that.

    The secret to Genesis is the epic sweep of the compositions, there is so much drama and buildups in the music, they are unlike anyone else in that regard. Mostly due to Banks, but not solely. Often, the actually musical materials are really very simple, very simple lines, but it's so brilliantly constructed. And great drumming, great vocals and fun complicated time signatures always helps with the fun

      I will go for a straight out sacrilege: although Bill Bruford is my favorite drummer, especially during his Bruford and UK years, I prefer 100x having Phil Collins on the drums over Bruford, when playing Genesis songs... Collins is unsurpassed! Of course, Phil is the original and the true member of Genesis, but the real reason is the Collins is way better when the matter is Genesis songs!

    To all the haters of the post Gabriel era... watch this video ! Showing the magic of gifted musicians and singer... Phil Collins at his absolute best !!
    Ok he was overexposed during the 80’s with commercial music, videos and movies.
    But he always been one of the greatest drummers in rock and a great performer !
    I cannot choose what gave me the biggest goosebump: the keyboard solo ? The 12-string guitar riff of cinema show ? The bass pedals ? The short but very intense drum duo ? The mellotron/choir of Afterglow ? The drum fill at the end of afterglow that sounds like a machine gun ? Of phil Collins singing « I miss you more » at the very end ???
    Yes they were great and mystical during the Gabriel years... but from 77 to 92, they were part of the best live performers in rock !!!
    Thank you Genesis !!!

    The first time I (knowingly) heard Genesis was when a friend introduced me to their music, back in about 1983. He played me an excerpt from the solo part of Cinema Show, and I loved it on first listen. The very next day I went out and bought the album, Selling England by the Pound, just to hear that again. It took a few listens to come around to the rest of the album, but come around I did. However, that solo still sends shivers up my spine, and I never grow tired of listening to it. I always liked when the Mellotron "Choir" came in, but in this version, it really hits you.
    While watching a Genesis video a few years ago ("Live from Wembley Stadium" i.e. the Invisible Touch tour), my son asked me which was my favourite band. I answered, without the slightest hesitation, "This one!"

    Steve Hackett is the most underrated musician in history! His contribution to Genesis was immense and his solo career over 35 years has proved he is the most accomplished guitarist in so many styles. His iconic solo on Firth of Fifth is one of rocks greatest moments. He alone has flown the flag for early Genesis pre Then there was three era with Genesis Revisited 1and 2. Don't forget Peter Gabriel in the classic line-up as well. Their respective departures weakened the progressive left-field element of the Genesis output.
    Daryl Steumer is a great technician and my only beef with him is that he over elaborates on the stunning simplicity of Hackett's guitar solos. Firth of Fifth a case in point. Chester Thompson is just awesome!

    • @FukiMakai
      @FukiMakai 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I don't like most of Daryl's renditions over Steve's stuff, but listen to 1981-1984 Firth of Fifth versions. Daryl makes improvisations with a very 1978-1980 Hackett-ish guitar sound. The improvisation makes some noise in the people which wanted to listen to the original, but it's better improvise than try to imitate the solo or... "rock it" like the 1992-2007 versions. The guitar sounds it's more like the chorused Steve guitars in between 1977-1979 fashion

      @@FukiMakai I think he plays a good homage even on the "rock it" solo versions. In fact as a hard rock solo (1992-2007) it sounds pretty amazing and doesn't lose its soul and delicateness despite the hard rock style. The sustain climax is still so moving on the "rock it" versions like The way we walk CD. Ok he's not Steve, but...

    This is my definitive favorite Cinema Show version, apart from the medleys (1981-1984; 2007). It's played in its entirety and sounds classic but modern and powerful. The 1973 version it's a great prog classic sounding but too slow and a bit hard to listen to. This version is the perfect bridge between the classic version and the modern versions. The lead keyboards are great, different from the previous versions, the Hammond phased organ it's like heaven and Mellotron (in its last great majestic appareance live in a tour) helps Banks to complete the sublime key ensamble.

    Thank you for posting this. Mike's bass line during the finale of this piece is my favorite bass line he ever did for this song. And man, they knew how to make that mellotron sound huge. Doubling it perhaps? I heard a lot of good mellotron back in those days, from Genesis to Yes, Crimson, Strawbs, to Tangerine Dream. No one played it better than Banks, and his strings never sounded as good after he stopped playing the mellotron, imo.

    Tony Banks using an ARP2600 live and changing patches like a boss. Oh the 70's...

    • @truefilm1556
      @truefilm1556 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yesss! I saw the same thing in one of the first shots. Holy s**** what a killer lead synth! The ProSoloist already was awewome in Tony's hands, but the modular 2600 just kills it - just the right amount of detune in the patches, not like the inferior Quadra or any of the lather synths. This is is it!!!

    • @pmoris4405
      @pmoris4405 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +truefilm what impresses me the most is his ability to use the 2600 live as if it were a preset synthesizer. I mean, the prosoloist was acctualy a preset synth but this? Tony is a true badass!

    • @truefilm1556
      @truefilm1556 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah, I wonder how Tony managed this. The 2600 is semi-modular with patch chords - as you of course know. No presets or programmable patches. Very likely some modifications made. Even more awesome: this is clearly an early 2600 - those sounded the very best! It was probably too hard on the long run (or unreliable) and Tony went back to the Quadra (single oscillator sounds were out of fashion for good by 1978) for the rest of the 1978 tour.
      Not preaching to the choir here, just sharing my admiration:
      The keyboard solo part of "Cinema Show" is basically a "walk through" of the ARP ProSoist. Darn, Tony even changes the octave during a run in one place. There's a TH-cam video somewhere (with the virtual ProSoloist) which I think is pretty close.
      I think it was the very best choice for Tony to pick up the Pro Soloist. Nothing more frustrating than being unable to use vibrato, filters and expression etc. let alone changing timbres/patches - when your left hand is stuck on the organ to hold the chords. A Minimoog would have been a bad choice for Tony (although I love that synth - who doesn't?).

      I love the moment near the beginning of part 2 when Tony switches his left hand from the Hammond to the Mellotron, but Mike Rutherford blows my mind on this video. The combination of the Shergold double neck and the bass pedals is just amazing. There's a brief top-down glimpse of his foot on the bass pedals and that terrific moment when he switches from 12 string to bass in midstream. Plus, his bass playing in Afterglow is just killer.
