    This is incredibly crisp and a wonderful reminder of just how great Phil's voice could be. And how while he wasn't exactly Peter, his own style made a lot of the early songs "fresh" and just as good imo.

      Great musicality in Phil’s voice, but sorry Peter owns this song. Is that still Steve Hackett on guitar? Whoever it is mangled The guitar solo. One of the best parts of the song . Tessitura seems a little high for Phil in the last chorus...

      Shaun Kelley Phil is struggling with tessitura in a few parts of DWTMK, it should of been keyed down but Genesis refused to do that at this time, later on in years they came to realise some songs would never be performed again unless they dropped key lol. Phil had some titanic struggles on the 2007 tour with vocals and drum parts, there was a particular part of dukes travels that he couldn’t cope with anymore and they dropped trying it, you probably know the bit I mean, age catches up with everyone in the end.

    As great guitarist Daryl Stuemer is, he often over elaborates where as Steve Hackett always played just the right notes without displaying virtuosity. If anything, it's now only on the Genesis Revisited versions that he expands the guitar parts far more than the original recordings. I am a traditionalist, and like the guitar parts as they are on the originals. Still, give me Hackett any day over any other guitarist. Pure genius.

    • @stephenpaulharper
      @stephenpaulharper 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Agree that Stuermer overplays. He's an excellent guitarist, and I liked him with Jean Luc Ponty, but he never played well in Genesis. Overplayed on guitar, and was at a loss on bass.

    • @hpatss4966

      Stephen Harper I think he was a great fit for genesis after Peter and Steve left. He wouldn’t have fit at all if he was there originally. But I think he plays this very well for playing the songs his own way. And he’s very good on bass. He was hired as a bassist and “Second Guitarist” That just sounds like ignorance.

    • @frk75
      @frk75 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I agree. As much as I love Daryl's own solos with Collins, I absolutely hate the way he took the famous hackett taping technique out of the way in this and replaced it with a generic speedy chromatic picking , all of this under the big thumbs up approval of the remaining members of the band. There was clearly a "we don't give a f*** about Hackett" attitude , at least in the early trio days

      His voice peaked 82, still didnt fall to below this performances level until the end of the Invisible Tour. His ability to lay onto a perfectly in tune vocal fry was amazing from 1981 to 1982. He trashed his voice in the name of music, and his ears and vertebrae to.

  • @twominutepianoman9868

    Gabriel’s voice was so unique in that he could “reach” those high notes in this song (without necessarily hitting them). As amazing as Phil was, it sounds here like he’s really straining to hit those notes. Peter was somehow able to pull it off. Tough to sing live for sure.

  • @crunch6161
    @crunch6161 4 ปีที่แล้ว +18

    Wow! I've never heard this song sung by Phil, what a fantastic recording! Although he struggled to hit certain high notes at times, I thought his tone was really good even though a little polite for my taste. Peter sung it with more force and authority and has a fuller tone which suits the song slightly better. Although Darryl Strummer is technically a very good player I think his musicality is lacking because his solo completely ruins it for me. Steve is a true artist who knows how to craft perfect solos that raise the songs to higher emotional levels. Just because you can play fast runs doesn't mean you have to. Finally, another example of how incredible Phil Collins was as a drummer, Chester cannot equal Phil's playing throughout and especially in the closing section of The Musical Box. Listen to Chester playing it here and then listen to Phil playing from the first Genesis Live album and you'll see what I mean. Also listen to the Dancing With The Moonlit Knight version from the Genesis Archive 1967-75 and you will hear Phil's Drum mastery!

    Love this version but my sincere listener's critic is:
    -Sublime keyboards. Tony's set between 1976-1980 is one of my favorites. Love the CP-70 and the organ, plus Mellotrons performed for the last time in this tour.
    -Generally the band is very good.
    -Phil Collins does a great job singing the song in his style. Of course he's not Gabriel but his rendition is very powerful.
    -Loved the transition to Musical Box including part of the original finale, not performed in the Phil's version of Musical Box in any tour since 1977, only as part of the complete track with Peter and Steve until 1975.
    -Only bad thing about this version is the Stuermer's efforts to play the song in his own. The variations doesn't sound good. In Musical Box he does a better job, but Dancing... was a very difficult song for him. It's one of that few songs where you can think "Is Hackett or nothing". That may be the main reason this song was not played anymore since that day.

    • @Eleventhearlofmars
      @Eleventhearlofmars 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Same with Firth of fifth, stuermer totally blows the feel of that solo with the constant over playing and noodling, less is more imo.

      Gerry Berry there’s a solo by Rutherford that I love on his (alleged) first crack at lead, Many too many off ATTWT. I love that solo at the end but it should of carried on for longer because it was just getting interesting when it was faded out. Rutherford played some great solos like home by the sea pt2 and the Abacab one comes to mind.

    • @jeffreytaylor6257
      @jeffreytaylor6257 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Gerry Berry Interesting reply but not unexpected. It is safe to say that Collins' presence in the band resulted in more improvisation (he was playing with Brand X during that period). While this occurred in the studio ("Waiting Room" on TLLDoB), once recorded, these tunes were played live as close to the recording as possible. Hackett probably looked at his solos as written parts to be played like a recital. That's all well and good. Their style and execution resulted in one of the best live albums in rock history.
      One more thing for consideration. The mid to late 70's was a time for guitar shredders. That Genesis went in that direction was no surprise Heck, they picked Steumer for his versatility and skill set. How long would he have stayed in the band had they not liked his contributions. Funny that we don't hear negative comments about Chester Thompson.

    I'm a bit surprised that Tony and Mike didn't request Daryl to calm down a bit. Just because you can play lots of fast notes doesn't mean you have to. But then again this is about the time that Eddie Van Halen showed up so I reckon these guys had to show off as well as they could. '78 in particular was the year of nifty guitar solos...just about every song on the radio had one.

      As a brilliant and technically excellent guitarist Daryl Stuemer is, he often over elaborates. For me, less is more, and Steve Hackett's style and economy of playing suited the songs better. On these versions of Dance with the Moonlit Knight, and the Musical Box, there is too much flashy overplaying. It is something that Hackett never could be accused of whilst in Genesis. The band really lost out when both Hackett and Peter Gabriel left. However, it cannot be denied that Banks, Rutherford and Collins did write some great material as the trio.
      Thankfully, there seems now no hope of the classic line-up reforming and playing again. Their time was then. Everything was recorded for all time, and that's where it should stay.

    • @marcoc.s.2372
      @marcoc.s.2372 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hackett style is not economy, he that couldn't play that fast :). Stuermer obviously did things in its way because that's his style. And he's american. Imagine a player have to play the exact same shit night after night without changing a note. Not everyone is available to do that. That's what Hackett did and probably Stuermer tried to mix up things in order to not go crazy.

    • @marcoc.s.2372
      @marcoc.s.2372 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      There's no hope I agree. First Phil is in bad condition physically. Second Peter would as always be uncertain to perform badly. Hackett already saturated the market with 20 years of tribute bands to Genesis

      Not really, they knew they couldn't find someone to replace Hackett, and they never wanted Daryl to do that. He has a completely different playing style and the band wanted that difference to be heard. Of course, getting someone who was a Hackett rip-off would've set the old fans to go "this guy is trying to emulate Hackett too much", there's no winning in this situation. You people would've never been happy.

      Sloppy? Mike has said repeatedly that Daryl is a technically superior player to himself.
