- This video is an excerpt from my concert 'Bandish' held at Tata Theatre, NCPA, Mumbai, in 2019. In this clip, I present the song ‘Rangapura vihara’, the beautiful, timeless composition of Muthuswamy Dokshitar, on Srirangantha Swamy at Srirangam. As I was researching for this concert I found some historic details about the Srirangam Temple which I have shared in the video here. As a preface to the song, I render a viruttam by Vedanta Desikar, which I am sure you will love listening to.
One of the most loved renderings of the song that have inspired me was by Bharat Ratna Smt. M. S. Subbulakshmi. One could feel the grandeur of the temple when she sang this piece.

*About Aruna Sairam*
Aruna Sairam (Padma Shri) is a Carnatic vocalist, composer, collaborator, humanitarian, and speaker. In addition to her performances in India, Aruna has taken Carnatic music to the global arena, at prestigious venues including the Royal Albert Hall and Carnegie Hall. Currently Vice Chairperson of the Sangeet Natak Akademi, Delhi, she was appointed in 2008 by the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu as Advisor to the Department of Culture. Aruna works towards the musical education of underprivileged students, through the Nadayogam Trust, which she founded in 2011. Aruna is grateful for the training she received under her mother Rajalakshmi Sethuraman and the legendary T. Brinda, and the mentorship from several masters throughout her musical journey. Her music erased geographic borders when she was the first to incorporate Abhang, a Western Indian musical form, into a traditional, South Indian concert.

I always enjoy Rangapura Vihara. My mother Tongue being Hindi, I couldn't understand the meaning, so I made it a point to look it up and learn it to better the experience. The version by Agam is my favourite one.
When I first learnt of the history of the flight of Shree Ranganath Swami from Divya Desham SriRangam, how thousands of devotees laid down their lives to protect and preserve their Dharma and how Shree Vishnu had to again live in exile in this Kaliyuga after his years of Vanwaas as Rāma in Tretayug, it was an emotional moment for me. Sadly, today our Dharma and beloved Bhagwāns are again facing a more sinister attacks. It would be a great dis-service to our ancestors and to ourselves if we don't unite and rise up to these threats and find solutions to the problems that plague our Matrubhoomi and threaten Dharma.
In the North of India, where I come from, we don't have much left to salvage, only shadows of a once glorious land remain. But Dakshināvart has been fortunate enough to have retained much of it. Need of the hour is to preserve, protect and rebuild again. Pranaam.

Rangapura Vihara's lyrics are entirely in Sanskrit. Like almost all, if not all, of Sri Muthuswamy Dikshitar's lyrics.

अब समय आ गया है कि अपने समुदाय के लोगों को लडना होगा ताकि मंदिरों की , अपने धर्म की , अपने संस्कृति , संस्कारों की , रीति रिवाजों की रक्षा की जा सके नहीं तो ऐसे ही मंदिरों को तोडा जाएगा , अपने धर्म के अनुयायियों को मारा जाएगा , हमारे धर्म पर ऐसे ही आघात होते रहेंगे । इसलिए अब हमें उठना होगा और लडना होगा ताकि हिंदू विरोधी मानसिकता को समाप्त किया जा सके

Arunamam is like wine,everyday it's getting super,pranaams to one of the greatest legends of Carnatic music

@@venkatvadlamani6323 We can better consider analogy with nectar or "sudharasa vaahini" .wine is an inappropriate analogy for her voice .Although almost all artists' voice is like ambrosia only .She also has melodious voice .I've heard many krtis like ananda nartana ganapatim , saundararajam ashraye , mangalambayai namaste , ...all are highly melodious and soothes the mind .I most often listen these unparalleled compositions rendered by Vidushi Aruna Sairam
Sree Ranga Pura Vihara’ - Muthuswami Deekshitar - in ' brindaavana saaranga' ragam,.actually its Brindabani Sarang of Hindustani ! Its a is a Kafi thaat raga. created by Swami Haridas. The associated mythology being that he brought Lord Krishna to earth by singing this raga who took the form of an idol which can still be seen in Mathura. One of the famous Ragas for the Sarang raagang, it is a popular raag of this family, together with Shuddha Sarang, and Madhyamad Sarangn notes Ga and Dha are not used ! Here, Vocalist Aruna sairam presented a class virutham ...Loved the rendition, especiallly charanam's last lines! Good recital . best wishes...happy Birthday to the Vocalist!
One need not understand the meaning of her songs ,without knowing the meaning of lyrics she takes us to the highest realms of music.
