*About Aruna Sairam*
Aruna Sairam (Padma Shri) is a Carnatic vocalist, composer, collaborator, humanitarian, and speaker. In addition to her performances in India, Aruna has taken Carnatic music to the global arena, at prestigious venues including the Royal Albert Hall and Carnegie Hall. Currently Vice Chairperson of the Sangeet Natak Akademi, Delhi, she was appointed in 2008 by the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu as Advisor to the Department of Culture. Aruna works towards the musical education of underprivileged students, through the Nadayogam Trust, which she founded in 2011. Aruna is grateful for the training she received under her mother Rajalakshmi Sethuraman and the legendary T. Brinda, and the mentorship from several masters throughout her musical journey. Her music erased geographic borders when she was the first to incorporate Abhang, a Western Indian musical form, into a traditional, South Indian concert.

I don't understand why they call abhanga a north indian music form .
Why would someone throw a Brick and make them stand on it? He might have as well stood on the floor. I am unable to comprehend the meaning of this act.
Even I did think about it and browsed, this is what I found: He throws a brick outside for God to stand on and wait for him until he finishes attending to his parents. It is the first day of monsoon so it is wet and muddy outside. If Lord Krishna stands upon a brick his feet will remain clean and dry.

This and other abhangs have been immortalized by Pt Bhimsen Joshi. It is near impossible to envisage someone else singing it, however valiant the effort it may seem. Some things are best left untouched.
That is oddly facetious. Such comments are more disrespectful to Pandit Joshi than anyone else. What is the use of a song that someone else cannot sing? Music is a form of story telling, a way to communicate and no one person can have a hold on the way a song is sung.

Disagree. Justl like there cannot be another way of playing a Beethoven or Mozart symphony.
fh downtheline classical music's improvisations cannot be bound. we have something called as an 'Upaj ang' and a 'Bandish ang'. Every performer practices 'Upaj' that is- The way he perceives a raga or a composition based on it and how further he improves it by his intellect or inner instincts and personality.
However, Mozart or beethoven cannot be played differently is because they made Symphonies.... not compositions. They made it as their own and stamped it with their tag which makes it untouchable. Classical compositions have every person's personal way of presenting it. Taans, Aalaps are not prewritten anywhere. All that is given is notation of that Raga and that is what you imbibe to develop yourself into an artist. So what goes on up here is a more devotional version of Bibhaas and how Aruna didi perceives it to be.
