  • Nicky Wire of the Manic Street Preachers puts forward the bands picks for the best song from each decade. He explains why Paul Weller was the spokesman for a generation, why they thought The Libertines were the future of rock 'n' roll and their love of Lana Del Rey's lyrics.

Met Nicky and James in the 90s, nice down to earth chaps the Manics. If I was choosing then Motorcycle Emptiness would be up there.

    "- Is James the boss?
    - Sometimes. I like to make him think he's the boss."
    Hilarious!
Nicky is such a sweet and intelligent person, absolutely love the video and his choice of the songs (and it's so nice to see him without the glasses as well).
Really looking forward to the new manics' album!

@@hyllaf yep. Completely agree. And the woman who interviewed Paul Weller was just as good. Used both leading & open Qs in the right ratio. Both clearly did their research re Weller & Wire, their preferred artists and songs, but didn’t flag-wave it - just used the knowledge it to engage and nudge the interview fwd without ever taking over. Great to see/hear this approach rather than the YT vox-pops where the interviewers think they’re the centre of attention…

How Paul Weller wrote the lyrics and songs he did at the age he was with The Jam was pure genious. I don't think the Jam had any bad lyrics but an example of greatness is Private Hell, how someone aged 22 could write that is amazing. Not my favourite Jam song musically but the lyrics are brilliant. Good choices here Nicky.
