      Richard D Hall is an tin-foil-hat-oxygen-thief-parasite and not fit to be mentioned in the same sentence as Richey.

    The album "this is my truth, tell me yours" played a MAJOR PART In me surviving 3 months in a rehab for my heroin addiction and I still treasure the album to this day and I have 4 copies just in case. The reason for my love of it is the song "be natural" which made me want to feel natural again but all the songs Are great. I would have a bath every evening and I had smuggled a Walkman in and would listen to the complete album whilst lying in the water. To me it was a very therapeutic way to adjust my mental set. Thanks for that guys.

      I feel you, these songs had/have healing power. I particularly love 'rebuild the void with flowers, sad eyed destruction build around sand and sea'. Wow. That helped lead me to a better future, in the same way as 'petrified for the millionth time, slowly my soul evaporates' summed up my then present. For you getting clean, for me coming out, but lives were changed for the better. I love so many other bands and artists and albums and songs but there are only a few albums I could name that have the emotional resonance of TIMTTMY for me. Shivers up the spine territory still...

    This album saved a depressed closet case 18 year old back in 1998. Every lyric resonated so much, particularly im not working, the music had such grace, and lyrically Nick was writing about depression from such a different POV, so real, naked, direct. Felt like every nerve ending was exposed, which is how I felt. To the point where ever since I’ve often found it painful to return to these songs. And indeed listening to the reissue 20 years on was pretty overwhelming, and I’m not ashamed to say I cried a lot. Very few albums mean as much to me. What more can I say, I’m so glad they were there. They’ve saved lives these men.

    How reassuring it is that Manic Street Preachers have such a huge fan base!!! People are drawn to the their truth as much as they are their astounding skills as musicians and songwriters. (Don't know bout the fondness for communism briefly mentioned though)Their authenticity is true beauty. How can you not love these guys?!!!! What would we do without them, especially in these dark times! We need them!!!

    The everlasting is one of the most beautiful songs ever written. Slightly better than black flowers in the sky.
    It is a song that never fails to make me want to cry.
    It's whistful, and whilst I don't know for sure, it must be a kind of requiem for Richey.

  • @grocerjack
    @grocerjack 5 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    A fascinating insight. This was the album that REALLY switched me onto them. I had liked Everything Must Go, but had reached an age where music had gone down the priorities (wife/kids/mortgage/work...life etc) and then I heard Tolerate and wow.....I get the disappointment of the original fans from The Holy Bible (which I also like) but a slight mellowing as you age is inevitable, and acting the angry young men can't go on forever. Life has a way of smoothing off the rough edges. I've loved every album since, including the oddly decried Lifeblood (I love that album). But the band have balls, and they try new stuff and lyrically and musically I think the last 3 albums have been comparable to this one. Long may they continue.

    JDB could put a tune to any lyric, he’s immensely talented and matched to Wires ability it’s just other worldly.
    Richy Edwards lyrics had some insane quality about them and James always managed to conjure up a riff that sounded like it was born for the words.

    I haven't heard any bands since the late 90's early 2000's write any truthful, meaningful and thought provoking lyrics. In some ways the Manics predicted the future and where we are headed with their songs. In this consumer, technological driven era, it is slowly killing us more than we realise. We are becoming meaningless and obsolete, we don't speak to each other any more, we shout, we scream. Art mirrors life and we are losing the simple things that make us human.

    • @issyjas3309
      @issyjas3309 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s an interesting way of looking at it, their body of work is like a time capsule. Looking back, going forward, constant reinvention.
      Their lyrics have spun me off in so many different directions , I can’t think of another band that gets close to an education.

    It's great, as is the band, but the fake distortion is a bit of a shame. The opening Ready for Drowning rendition is available in HD quality on the millennium concert DVD. Not sure why they would deliberately reduce the quality of the footage to fit an 'aged' aesthetic like this, and then say in the intro it's the only quality that exists. 🤷🏻‍♂️

    I feel that this album when I heard it at 16 just left school was the last time I was truly honest to myself. After that was just bullshit machismo and dishonest braggadocio. Maybe some glimpse of my true self from time to time but I just feel like there's been so many missed opportunities. Beautiful music though. A truly wonderful band. Probably the best that the 90s had to offer.

    I'm not well acquainted with a lot of their music. I wonder did they ever consider recording or writing in the Welsh language? I know it has had a resurgence in recent decades and a lot of other bands from Wales seem to have embraced their native tongue. Maybe it has to do with where about in Wales you were brought up.

    Another nicely made film, but there needs to be a definitive Manics 'movie' made, covering everything, from the start to the present, giving every period a fair amount of time and not just focusing on the 94 and 96 years. No Manifesto was good, but I feel something epic can be put together, and should be.
