      @MrHoppers002 I think the issue is energy efficiency. Since antimatter-matter reaction is 100% efficient, in comparison, nuclear fission is merely 0.1%, where as fusion is about 0.8%. Warp core is over 100 times more efficient (assuming energy conversion is always 100%, otherwise every single starship will be cooked by the waste heat, even if energy conversion efficiency is 99.9%).
      Considering the square cube law where internal volume grows cubically compares quadratic growth of surface area of warp bubble. To move that amount of space at speed FTL will require significant amount of energy.
      In canon, starship does have fusion reactor that can power warp drive to travel at warp 1 (exactly speed of light) when needed.
      But considering inefficiency, should Starfleet enlarge fusion reactor to similar power source, they will suffer seriously from square cube law; where the growth in size and weight out paced growth in energy production and, counter-intuitively, resulting in a slower starship.
      I have seen others argued they can power starship with microblack hole. This indeed was canon, however, to create a microblack hole in the first place, they need massive amount of power to create it, and since tiny micro blackhole evaporate way too fast to be useful, they will need a lot more energy to enlarge it so that it does not evaporate right away. All of this implies micro blackhole manufacturing is energy intensive, requiring power similar, if not more, than typical warp core. When all the dilithium are gone, this meant micro blackholes can no longer be maintained, and will eventually evaporate, stranding the starship powered by blackhole (assuming they were not destroyed by the massive amount of energy released by collapsing micro blackhole: th-cam.com/video/8nHBGFKLHZQ/w-d-xo.html)
      What limits Starship is not design, is power.
      So far, in Star Trek universe, except mycelial reactor, currently there is no alternative power source that is as powerful as warp core.
      My wild guess is mycelial reactor may play a role in season 3, at least get mentioned once.

      @tekcomputers 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @MrHoppers002 Well to be fair warp isn't actually the issue at play, but rather the fact of how limited dilithium is since the burn. Warpdrive, transwarp, and slipstream all rely on power output from a warpcore even if some (slipstream) isn't specifically "warp drive". Whereas Discovery's displacement drive does not rely on high plasma energy output from a warpcore to function. The Burn isn't like the issue with an Omega particle explosion. Subspace isn't destroyed, it's just there is little usable dilithium left to sustain widespread FTL by system that rely on that kind of power. As such ships have to severly limit warp, keeping at low warp speeds at best interspersed with sublight to conserve dilithium. OTher things like the graviton sligshots are that basically it's a one way benefit, as you would need slingshots at your destination to get back in the same time. Also they may require warp-core type power as well for operation which would take us back to the issue of the dilithium shortage since The Burn.
      The last type, the tachyon based solar sails that the Bajorans benefited has its own issues, as you can't move large ships with it and would just be confined to small ships. As much of what STar Fleet is doing these days is maintenance and supply runs that makes that technology pretty much useless.

      @MrHoppers002 - Apparently as part of the power source, since they attempted to install it on Voyager, which lacked an alternative for generating that much power.
      That said, I do wonder why a civilization that can convert matter into energy (as the transporter does) can only achieve full conversion using matter-antimatter annihilation. You would think that they would be able to generate and control the energy in other ways.

      Same, I was shocked that Saru asked for assignment. Even more shocked by the facial expression by attending officers. Their reaction and facial expression implied they were not briefed about Spore Drive; thus it can be deduced that Spore Drive was supposed to be a secret and Saru blew it.
      In highly structured organization, blurting out random information and asking random questions are taboo. Saru violated both of them. Imagine Trump (after he's no longer the president) blurts out something like "We can shoot down ballistic missiles in blink of an eye". He will get into big trouble.
      In fact, Trump had already blurted out two US secret:
      1. USA's development on hypersonic missile (AGM-183)
      2. USA's state of the art Keyhole spy satellite's resolution
      Information 1 helps potential opponents deduce US's progress on hypersonic weapon.
      Information 2 helps potential opponents (including terrorists) to accurately disguise themselves thus reducing effectiveness of Keyhole satellites.
      Experts may deduce even more information from two leaks provided by Trump.

      But that doesn't necessarily mean that all the people present realize that Discovery is capable of long-range teleportation. For all they know it's just an alternate form of warp drive. Most of the 32nd century Starfleet people think it's an antique starship. That's why the assembled officers looked so shocked when told of it's true capabilities and why the admiral wants to keep that information restricted.

All anybody saw was a weird visual effect and Discovery had jumped away. It's a pretty big leap from that to the assumption that it has instantaneous teleportation with unlimited range. Especially when the starship doing it is, from your perspective, the equivalent of a Viking longboat.

    After hating on STD for two seasons, this year has really made me reconsider my view of the show. With a few judicious edits and some creative reimagination, Discovery could have began with a three episode mini series concluding with the ship pushed into the far future just before the ending credits.
    I really appreciated "Die Trying." It was easily my favorite episode of the series. The CinC of Starfleet is as close to realistic as I could ever hope for. The featured scene from Episode 6 is a very logical follow up, and I *loved* how serious the Admiral is taking blessing that is the 1,000 year old ship in his fleet.
    Damn. FINALLY, Discovery has hit its stride.

      Second season was not good either, but some episodes peaked my interest with this Sphere data, red angel and such. At least we had some kind of mystery,

      @CrimsonRegalia 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @MrHoppers002 My comment was literally about adapting the Spore Drive to the existing (32nd century) fleet. You literally just agreed with me. LOL... That's why I said that at the moment, only the navigation issue is preventing this adoption to the other federation ships but it should be easily overcome with the joint effort of the Federation.
      But since you brought the possibility of a refit for Discovery (which wasn't even the subject of the comment) I would argue that the availability of technologies like programmable matter makes it harder to tell whether or not a refit makes economical sense.
      Think about 3D printing. Just a few decades ago rapid prototyping was very uneconomical. These days, almost anyone can churn out design iterations and revisions because of 3D printing (though still not as economical as mass production processes in some cases). Now scale that up to technology that basically builds itself. Even basic design work could be offloaded AI whilst being overseen by engineers.
      The processes that build technologies also improve over time. Whether or not advancements in manufacturing technologies is linear or more exponential is for people far smarter than I am to speculate. But a will say this; a few decades ago, if you didn't have a wrench to loosen up an oil filter, you would've had to expend so much energy (in fuel, food, etc.) to drive to the hardware store and back for a tool that at best you are only going to need once a year. Even manufacturing this tool took significant energy. I could literally print the same tool in less than an hour today and recycle the plastic after if needed.
      Also remember, we are just talking about a refit here. A boat from 50 years ago may not be as good as boats today but giving an old boat a modern offboard engine and quality of life improvements would really go a long way to at least help it keep up.
      TLDR: The economies of scale that far into the future might be very different from how we evaluate them today. A minor 32nd-century upgrade is not out of the question.

Then also we know how that as tech advances the equipment gets smaller in trek universe so the shields and weapons are a quick switch I would say along with a new warp core as the core is easily removable. So for the refit it could be very fast considering the advancement in dry docks and equipment used. But I would love them to change the necelles to be smaller and change the blue colour to red at the intake and the bright blue from the future trek ships. If I switched out parts I would beam them out and have organic connectivity systems to intergrate through the ship kinda like the Borg infecting a ship.

    Somehow, the 32nd century Starfleet uniforms remind me of WW1 German military uniforms. Don't know if it is intentional or not. If it is, I get the feeling the 'Emerald Chain' might be set up as an allied force.
    Maybe the Discovery and it's crew are on the wrong side of a conflict that's been going on for a couple of centuries and the Burn was an intentional means to an end, namely to stop Starfleet and the Federation from agressively expanding and loosening its grip on the quadrant?

      The ratings suggest this show is not that good. The ratings are horrible.

      Trek fans are noticing the horrible cgi, reused stock cgi (no less), stock effects, stock pictures, too much hologram controls (it's a cheap effect), writing that hates on the old trek fans, and as an added bonus: Round house kicks for everyone!!
