I absolutely love this symphony! I cannot get enough of it. I could listen to this magnificent work every day and not get tired of listening to it.

I've loved it since I first heard it in the 80s. If it had been given a name by someone I'm sure it would be a lot more famous.

Haydn's minuettos are like chocolate bonbons, the trios the creamy filling.

I feel this is one of his grandest minuets, the first part of it anyway.

This is superlative Haydn. IMO, it could not be surpassed. What I really love is the incredible enthusiasm of the orchestra. For some reason, most orchestras seem to love playing Haydn. That is definitely the case here.

    Papa Haydn...
No one ever wrote a better Symphony in the Classical Period than Papa Haydn at his best.
(Mozart, on balance, always equaled his mastery of the form, from about the age of 15 until his own death, but he never surpassed Papa in that mastery.)
The Second Movement may be the most sublime use of the "theme and variations" technique ever composed; the Third Movement, one of the most beautiful, and beautifully orchestrated, minuet and trios ever composed.

Apart from his later symphonies - 35, 36, 38, and the final three, 39, 40, and 41, Mozart never really prioritised the symphony as a form into which he poured his more profound thoughts.
Apart from these six symphonies, none of the earlier works could really be said to approach, never mind surpass the symphonies of Haydn.
Mozart’s earlier symphonies whilst never less than engaging, beautifully composed, and invariably attractive, are in truth rarely programmed in concerts apart from 25 (a formulaic, one-off attempt at a ‘sturm und drang’ style symphony), 28, 29, 31 (an over-rated, noisy bag of tricks and special effects), and 33, which do occasionally appear.
The symphony became more important to Mozart in the 1780’s once he got to Vienna, and had met Haydn; from that point - particularly with the last six symphonies - Mozart indubitably wrote six of the greatest Classical symphonies of all.
But from being a 15 year old - absolutely not.

Rustic menuetto. But how delightful. As another person wrote, no one, but no one wrote a symphony like Papa, not even Mozart.

Probably because, for just about the first time - along with the works I mentioned previously - Mozart was actually trying his best with the symphony.

Great friend of J.C.W.T.Mozart; you don’t need all the baptismal names - they were *never* used during either composers’ lifetimes; it’s plain Joseph Haydn.

One thing that irritates: the contrast between f and p. Haydn oscillates hugely and it does feel at times as though he is bashing me over the head with his f's. I'm not at all sure that modern orchestras have this right. Post-Beethoven and pre-Beethoven. I find it's the same with many Mozart symphony performances. Constant oscillatiions between f and p and modern orchestra read them more as ff and pp all the time. It becomes incredibly wearing.

Mozart and Haydn shared a common musical language so superficial similarities are inevitable.
Beethoven inherited this language, along with all the forms and structures, but then moved music into a new age which is clearly evident from his early works; the reminisces of his two great predecessors however are clearly audible as you point out in Beethoven’s first symphony.
However, reference my second paragraph, in many respects I think Beethoven’s 1st symphony in more of a new beast than it is often credited to be.

@@elaineblackhurst1509 eh. Beethoven had a lot of studying and advancement to do. Which is why after his first set of symphonies and mediocre piano concertos, he started to take his time. His remaining 3 piano concertos took an average of 3 years and his symphonies about the same except for his 9th which took about 15 years lol. Then if you are to study them deeply, you hear many "borrows" from Haydn and Mozart in everything he did, including his 9th.

    • @beethovenlovedmozart
      @beethovenlovedmozart 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Just because Mozart and Haydn only have like 5 or 10 second "daring" key changes and Beethoven made them more obvious for longer periods doesn't make him revolutionary. I bet if I studied Haydn seriously for 5 years, I can hear a ton of Beethoven in his works. .
Mozart brought the ingenious melody and chromaticsm, and Haydn brought more daring harmonic tones, and loudness. To be honest here, Beethoven hopefully eventually thanks Haydn for what he gave him. Their skill sets Match each other, and I don't think Beethoven becomes Beethoven without his teaching. Haydn taught Beethoven how to write irregular, daring harmony, with loud and soft bursts when you don't have any melodic talent whatsoever. Beethoven thought he could make up for it by copying Mozart for the melodic parts. Unfortunately he needs 3 years to work on it because it takes time to study thousands of Haydn and Mozart works. Haydn and Beethoven were a perfect match so Beethoven could have a career besides piano playing.
