An introduction to George Washington's foreign policy, including his Neutrality Proclamation, the Citizen Genet Affair, the Jay Treaty, and Pinckney's Treaty, as well as the conflict between Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton concerning the French Revolution. This lecture was designed chiefly for AP US History (APUSH) students, but is good for anyone with an interest in foreign policy, diplomacy, or early US History.

Thank you for the excellent way to explain the sometimes complex history of the US. You keep it simple and at a level that anyone not only understands but enjoys.

It gave the US the Ohio River Valley territory and pushed Native Americans off their land :)

Hamilton RIGHTLY argued that the French help in the Revolution was from a French government that no longer existed at that time.

Something else to add, at this point in history, US Senators were selected by state governments, not through direct popular election as they are today.

The Jay treaty was more controversial than simply unpopular and there's a difference.
The Jay treaty was unpopular with the Democratic-Republican sections of the public, but with the more Northern states there was a greater tendency to support the treaty.
Washington campaign strongly for the treaty and put his prestige and reputation behind it. Hamilton organised papers and counter protests in favour of the treaty and did see success in the Northern areas. The violence of the Democratic-Republicans was also linked to the the violence of the French Revolutionists, which made the anti-Jay sections of society lose favour in many eyes.
The thing was that those who opposed the treaty made a greater fuss about it than those who supported it, which made it appear that more people would be opposed to it than for it. Todd Estes points out that Hamilton and Washington were more effective in rallying public opinion than Jefferson.

The video was good but the American Revolution was supported by the monarchy of France, not by French revolutionaries. King Louis drove France into bankruptcy with his support for the American Revolution, as he was competing with the British Empire, which was a huge contributing factor for the French Revolution in the first place. You do not acknowledge this as being one of the reasons the US did not support the French Revolution and you make it seem in your video that the Independence movement was supported by French Revolutionaries rather than the French monarchy.
