the "make good use of what's there between them" approach was great, it definitely needs a better ESC setup. with the "use existing stuff!" approach, I'd stick with the chainsaw battery (is it 3S or 4S and who cares?) and put a smaller sprocket on the rear wheel to give it more top speed... before ever trying to take it into higher voltages, because reliability. not knocking you or your generous offer one little bit, its just my opinion of how to stay with the project theme. the other option is maybe ditch the second reduction box and slap a larger sprocket on the rear wheel... I do kinda think it should top out at 22-25 mph so its fun.
@@modelnutty6503 well I'm pretty sure they bought the chainsaw for the project, so there's that. The battery is 60V max so likely 15-16S. Not horrible and it can be adapted for other 48v controllers (which max at 60v). The chainsaw kit they have is $215, which is a lot. A 2010 motor capable of up to 10kW with a 1.5kW controller is $100. Another $100 for some more batteries and they'll have a much better performance drivetrain.5
You should put something one the gearing like a bicycle hub so that when you give it gas it catches and spins the chain but when you let it of it spins freely
As a big RC helicopter guy, I want to suggest looking into a good quality speed controller. That's the heart and soul of an electrically driven vehicle. Even more important than the motor. There are lots of nice, programmable variable speed controllers to choose from. You can set throttle curves and everything. Check the RC aircraft community.
That looks great! I would love to build my kids something like this. You guys might have better results using the parts from a quarter scale electric buggy to power something like this.
There's gotta be a way to disable the braking when you come off the throttle. It's in the control module.. I know someone around here is smart enough to tell him how to disable it. Would love to see it with a faster gear on concrete where a bike like that would be used... Cant wait!!!!
If you guys don't need that 50cc 2 stroke weed whacker engine I would totally buy it off you guys. I have a razor e100 electric scooter that would love that engine lol.
I would love half of the stuff they throw away. Just the project starting vehicles like those kawasaki ATV's are here 4-6K€ peace, Dirt bikes 1-4K depending condition. Then again guess its that people dont have thumbs to wrench these vehicles into top condition, what leads to getting rid of them what leads to prices dropping.
@@GrindHardPlumbingCo you guys could probably build something pretty rad out of scraps laying around. Old set of snowblower tires. I'm sure with all of your mechanical knowledge you would be able to figure out the whole " remote" aspect of it. Hell you could build a mini camera car that you could use to film. Like the drone but from ground level.
Years back, I had a pocket bike. It was a 2-stroke 50cc. It also had the only cvt I've ever seen on a pocket bike. At 250 lbs., I'm no featherweight, but on a flat straight, the bike would pull me at 35 mph.
If it's a DC motor you can solder a diode between the electrical contacts on the outside to let the motor freewheel forward when you let off the throttle instead of stopping dead like that. Make sure the current and voltage rating on the diode meets or exceeds the current and voltage rating on the motor. If it just doesn't run when you hit the throttle you've soldered it on backwards.
You boys should get a 3d printer. Probably not a s suitable tool to keep in the shed but it would allow you to design and print plastic (even a cheap printer will print PLA well) and allow you to rehouse some of these chainsaw components. I recently used mine to design and create a new mounting bracket for the speedo cluster on a 85’ cb500. Additionally, you could connect the electric throttle from the chainsaw to a spring-return variable resistor to allow you to connect a braided steel cable to a standard motorbike handlebar throttle. I’m an electrical engineer and just want to play in the shed with you guys....😭 I think learning CAD and having a machine would help you guys tremendously
Most consumer electric chainsaws have a safety feature that cuts power if the saw gets hung up and the chain stops abruptly. It's meant to keep people who don't know what they're doing from getting pulled forward onto the saw and kickback injuries. It's built into the micro controller for the motor.
I made a electric razor pocketbike chainsaw powered back when i was 14, dis gives me flashbacks 😟. It barely ever worked but was fast as hell, 60cc gas chainsaw lol
Next, you need to make an altermotor from a 200amp gm alternator. It'll give you a "transmission" of sorts too. 1-5v on the slip ring either gives more speed or more torque.
+1 for the EV content. Hope there are plenty more. Make an AWD hybrid go kart, one chainsaw motor on each of the front wheels and petrol engine on the back to a live axel. Simple and should have a ton of torque regardless of what you strap onto the back.
I bought the cove commuter and I really like it. So does my wife ....so I bought another one. It's pretty nice I take it all over and have my music ready to share
I salvaged a bunch of junk and made an ev gocart for my five year old. After watching this I think I have a new project to build or maybe a electric dirt bike. Then again she does have a Barbie jeep, man so many ideas sense I started watching you guys.
You really shouldn’t need gear reduction for an electric motor. The only thing that you need is a variable speed trigger and a decent/ adjustable speed controller. Keep up the great vids
Not all electric motors are happy at low rev high torque applications. Especially a motor designed for a chainsaw. Keeping the revs high and the wheel torque high via reduction is the way to go.
Just gotta say, I love my electric chainsaw. For big logs, yeah, still want my 2 stroke husky. But for 80% of yard work the quiet n simple battery unit is brilliant. N a lot of my wood comes from… aah… clandestine harvesting. Not screaming to the world HEY IM RUNNING A SAW HERE is pretty handy. Keep it up with the EV’s

Do yourself a favour and buy some quality VESC for this stuff, more torque, more speed, fine throttle control + proper ev throttle. Just make sure you don't get one of those VESC that are just wrapped in heatshrink, those are usually barebone and blow up often from voltage spikes, anything in aluminium enclosure should be fine, like trampa vesc.
Put an O-drive controller on that stat! (Though 60v is pushing an O-drive a little) The bit of extra work fitting an encoder is worth it for the low speed and torque control you'll get. (think trials bike lvl control/responsiveness but better)
