    Just a quick video on how I replaced a spiral cable or clock spring on a 2008 Toyota Matrix. The ABS Light was on, and the dealer told the owner that he needed a new spiral cable for around $620 installed.
    This is the same as many other Toyota models, and should be the exact same as the Toyota Corolla. Pretty easy job, just make sure to disconnect the battery before working on or around the airbag.
    Tools needed:
    T30 torx bit
    small flathead screwdriver
    No.2 Phillips screwdriver
    Steering wheel puller (may not be necessary)
    10mm wrench to disconnect negative battery cable
    Thanks for watching!

    Great video!! Really appreciate you taking the time to do this, and it was a huge help. Two things that I learned while doing this.
    1. You’re not kidding about the Torx screws being tough to get out. I actually had to shave some plastic away from the insertion point to finally get them far enough out. One of the trickier parts of the process.
    2. Be VERY, VERY careful when putting the yellow plug on the base of the clockspring. The pins inside are very thin and flimsy and they’re super easy to bend if you don’t get the plug lined up properly. Found that out the hard way. Luckily I was able to straighten things out and made it work, but I should have been more careful.
    Happy to be driving again without the light on!

      Have the same problem, tried to loosen them all the way but the airbag still won't come out, very frustrating. Going to try shaving some plastic away today.

      I just replaced it and the airbag light went off but now I have a check engine light code P2111 "Throttle Actuator Control System - Stuck Open" rpm went up and down So I cleared the code and that stopped. I wonder If I unplugged some wire in there while I was replacing it without noticing.

    GREAT Video! Explained very clearly , no wondering how to take the electrical clips off.
    Also , one of the pitfalls is, you may need a steering wheel puller .
    The dealer wanted 600$ for this work
    Not part of the Takata recall
    A sensor is the recall
    NOT the "spirol cable"; as it is mis spelled in their computer

    Thank you for this video! You gave a perfect explanation and it was far better than the others i had to sit through before finding yours.
    Tip for others about to tackle this: My local dealership wanted $800 for just the Clock spring part but i found it new on Amazon for $17.

    Very helpful, thanks. One thing I wonder is how the ECU knows there is a connection issue with the airbag. Maybe there's a loopback on 2 pins it checks for continuity?

    I'm installing an Aftermarket NRG hub kit, on my 06 Matrix XRS. I won't need to remove the steering column, or put those T screws back in, because I'll have an Aftermarket Steering wheel, and Quick release kit hooked up, to my Steering wheel, but the steering wheel puller was helpful. now I know I might need one, because my OEM steering wheel, may not be easy to pull out.

    The dealer told me that the eBay part I bought used different clips. Now I am going to pull the steering wheel myself to verify what they are telling me. I suspect they were just annoyed that I chose to supply the part myself and not purchase their mega-expensive dealer clock spring. I will know in a few days when I get the time to get into it.

      @davidg5704 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      After market ones are cheaper design but still work. Dealer overcharges for this part, typically 10x more than if you buy on Ebay. Even if have to change many times still less money.

    This is a great resource. What if the code leads to the clock spring, but replacing it does not make the indicator light go off? Do you know any tricks for tracing the second wire (that is not replaced with the new part) to the potential source of the problem?

    Thanks. Gonna tackle this on my 04 XRS. I went and grabbed one at a junkyard from a pretty low mileage matrix. Can't afford new toyota...and figure I'd rather take a chance in a used toyota part than some of the super cheap stuff you see online (literally seen then for $35).

    Great video, how did you diagnose it to the clock spring (spiral cable)? My 2005 Corolla gives me a B1811 code open circuit in driver squib (second stage) . Toyota wants to replace clock spring and Airbag for $1750!! What causes the clock spring to go bad?

    Hello. Nice video. Really helpful. However, I tried to do some repairs in the air condition so to dismount the wheel and airbag was necessary, and now, the airbag light is on, the horn doesn't function, there's a click sound in the spring and the locks take off alone. Do you think everything is connected? Any recomendation? Thanks.

    My yellow connector, on the underside next to the black one, won't re seat. Are the pins misaligned? I've followed instructions here.

    • @DantheFixitMan
      @DantheFixitMan  ปีที่แล้ว

      Will the old one still re-seat in the connector? I would carefully try that, and/or inspect the new part carefully to make sure it’s the correct part.
