  • 2006 Toyota Corolla B1811 Air Bag Code - Clock Spring Replacement
I start out by confirming complaint. I scan for codes and find an open circuit in the airbag system. (SRS) Code found: B1811 "Open in Driver's Squib (Dual Stage - 2nd Step) Circuit"
After determining that the fault is associated with the steering wheel airbag circuit, specifically an open circuit to the airbag in the steering wheel, I set out to determine which of the two wires sets going to the airbag, is the one causing the problem. For safety and redundancy, there are TWO plugs to the airbag. What I want to do prior to "just replacing" the part, is test the circuit to determine exactly where the fault is. I semi-succeeded in isolating the fault to being between the clock spring input and the actual airbag, but failed to prove if it was the actual airbag itself, or the clock spring. I THINK I saw microcracks in the ribbon! (The fault was confirmed to be either in the clock spring itself, or the BLACK connector at the clock spring, as I have driven 5000+ miles over 5 months and it's still behaving)

I do most, if not all repairs, with tools that I carry around in my overloaded 1997 Crown Victoria Police Interceptor. I perform "On-Site" braking and suspension repairs, amongst other diagnostics and services. My tools consist mostly of Craftsman, a few Stanley, Snap-On, Husky, Pittsburgh, and S&K tools. Scan tools include hand held Actrons, DVOMs, and test lights. I also currently use a Zurich ZR Pro, for advanced and bidirectional diagnostics as well as a Snap-On Verus Pro, for more detailed diagnostics. I'm always expanding my collection, based on need and convenience.

Almost took this back down, as when I previewed it, it looked like really poor resolution. Everyone seeing this ok?

Excellent job, the resolution looked fine to me. Thanks for sharing! I like to put a 2ohm resister instead of jumping it together and see if the code goes away.

Hello! Cool fix!! My 02' Corolla has 215k miles. Changed my upstream O2 sensor, but of course it's a downstream one that needs to be changed. I've tried several times but couldn't. Just not enough room. I'll be taking it to a shop for help to break it loose 😊! Thank you very much, looks very good! Enjoy!😊

Might be time to change my downstream sensor again. The one I put in not that long ago, is starting to run out of normal range

@@HouseCallAutoRepair passed emission test a month ago the light didn't come back on in three weeks after disconnecting the battery. Engine hesitates sometimes on idle. Runs fast with premium gas! Thank you!

I'm glad it turned out better than Initially thought it would. I didn't think it was going to clear up, but it must have been on my end...
