    Myself and another alumni of his classes called him about a month ago to thank him for still having all of our digits,as well as our meaningful careers. I'm so thankful that he was in all of our lives.

    I really enjoy watching your videos, but have a talk with your cameraman. He seems to be focused primarily on keeping you centered and not giving us a good look at the machinery. We end up being thoroughly familiar with your coveralls but left wondering what the machinery looks like.

    Last shop I worked at had that same polish lathe! We had to change the motor due to a shop flood and it was a big job getting all the water out of the gearbox and getting the electric motor off.

    You've gotten some SMOKIN deals! I've made out at auctions where other bidders were sleeping or yakking. I've also made out after the auction on items that didn't get a bid.

      Wih the exception of a few sheriffs and small towns Who keep in mind the spirit of the law opposed to the exact letter of the law.

    i was at an auction of some equipment . they had some sullair screw compressors 7.5 hp and one bigger one. guys were really interested in the small ones . the big one came up and i bid 500 as an opener. no one else bid . they went silent when i said 500 so i didn't need to fight over it. turned out to be a 30 hp screw compressor with only 2500 hrs on it . i still have it as one of my backup units now 20 yrs later but it was my main unit for years till i needed more cfm .

    • @HOWEES
      @HOWEES  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I ran a Nebel sliding gap bed, I did not like it, it was not rigid & it did not stay straight, as the bed moved out. Most of the time Lathes have been chosen by what was available more than, looking for a certain machine.

    Machining in Alaska makes me wonder something. I'm curious if it's an issue. Do you ever have to be concerned about thermal expansion? I wasn't sure if any of the work you did would have had tight enough tolerances to where hermal expansion might pose an issue. P I'm really interested if there's any change in the process due to acclamation from the elements being that you work in Alaska.

      Most things heat/cool together & the fit is the same, but some materials don't like the cold. Cold is also good to help a shrink fit, if it's the right day. I also have seen problems blamed on the cold, because it was easy to do & kept the blame away from the bad procedure. I observed welds allowed to cool at -50 outside, then the later failure blamed on the weld alloy, the new alloy came with strict welding guidelines on pre/post heat, the pre/post heat solving the problem.

  • @ronblack7870
    @ronblack7870 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

    when you talk about cost of machine vs the work you are comparing apples and oranges. if a machine gives you a $100k of work it only earns you the profit on those jobs so likely 35 - 50% of the gross at best. so whether it makes money should be did it make you more profit than it's cost.

    • @HOWEES
      @HOWEES  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You are correct, this is not a profit/loss analysis. I think this more correctly is an indicator of total volumes vs machines that don't get used.
