  • This is the Perfect example of what happens when you save bean seeds that are cross pollinated. Jung Seed did replace the seeds with a new Lot number. Let's see if they produce Yellow Wax Beans.

I love mullein. As a medicinal herb type person, I have used it a lot. It’s
good for asthma, coughs, tuberculosis, and related respiratory problems.
The plant has also been used to treat hemorrhoids, burns, bruises, and gout.
As a kid we would take pine tree sap and smear it on the dry heads to make
torches. Lol, youth. Like you said, “it can also be used for toilet paper.” Some
call it cowboy butt wipe. Lol, Bless Ya'll.

    • @rainspringing

It's fine if the beans are all different families. That or you have no preference about them crossing. lol I've done so with a few varieties of basic green pole beans, where they were all much of the sameness, with no standout qualities, during their trial year. Saved the best specific pods/plants of each. They still produce mutt green pole beans, none of the trialed were objectionable in any way, or I wouldn't have saved their seed. Each year those mutts come up in the rotation they are better able to handle our weather, so make better plants and beans. If you are planting all kinds in the same year of Phaseolus vulgaris then it would be easy to get a crazy jackpot of weird with serious pollinators.
The easiest way is to have one variety of each family, per year, for seed saving in a garden space. So, as an example, a variety each of: pole, lima, field pea, chick pea, and mung bean might be one year's summer line up. Next year all the bean trial varieties and known favorite excess seed for eating/canning/storage/fresh comparison meals only, and one each of the other families. Next year back to only one common bean to eat fresh a bit but mostly save seeds from, and so on. Bean seeds/dried beans last a really long time, and canned last long enough to get through to the alternate year. Blanched frozen tend to start losing perfection sooner. If you decide you have a new favorite variety, those previous variety seeds eat just fine as dried soup or chili mix too!
      This may help:
Common beans- pole, bush, black, shell, dried, etc. (P. vulgaris) can cross occasionally or wildly often, with each other, depending on pollinator behaviors
Yardlong beans (Vigna sesquipedalis) will cross with each other and sometimes with Southern peas/Field peas (Vigna unguiculata)
Southern peas/Field peas (Vigna unguiculata) will cross with each other and sometimes with Yardlong beans
Runner beans (P. coccineus) will usually only cross with each other, very rarely with common beans
Lima/Butter beans (P. lunatus) cross only with each other
Garbanzo or Chick Pea (Cicer arietinum) cross only with each other
Soybean (Glycine max) cross only with each other
Mung bean (Vigna radiate) cross only with each other
Fava/Broad bean(Vicia faba) reportedly cross only with each other, but are grown through winter here, and protected during rare 15-20F nights

Too few pollinators around my area. I've taped cheap paint brushes to my containers for hand pollination when I see blooms on my squash. I'm growing 2 varieties of summer squash. Everything in my garden, so far, are from seed. I haven't had to purchase any plants this year!! Stocked up on Dollar Tree vegetable seeds. Container gardens don't need huge amounts of seeds. I want another fruit for containers. My little fig tree is growing well. My happy place!!

I too have struggled with a few seed suppliers. (Baker Creek in particular. I understand things happen but they deleted my review stating the cross pollination issue, I had proof. Ugh!)
I’d say those beans were crossed the generation before. If this was the first generation of hybrids they ALL would be the same. Since they are showing so much variation, I think it’s pretty safe to say this is an F2 generation.

I noticed many of the seeds in your 2nd New package looked more like my purple pole been seeds than the black seeds I've previously had for yellow pole beans. After seeing your experienceS with Jung Seeds, I'm not at all impressed with that company. Never a dull moment at Deep South. So nice to see your beautiful property!!!

I had the same problem with Zuchinni seeds this year! Only a few are Zucchini and the rest are either a gourd or pumpkin, all out of the same seed pack. On another note, one way to preserve the over abundance of yellow squash is to pare the outer part down to where the seed starts but use only the firm flesh then grate or put in processer and chop fairly small like pinky size then cook until barely done with preferred seasoning and freeze. It doesn’t get mushy that way and you just thaw and heat. The seeds can be used in soup or stock or for the chickens. It’s really good this way and taste almost exactly like fresh!

Good morning DSH Danny & Wanda!
I’m in NW Maine and about 15 miles from Quebec, it’s been raining here and very chilly 🥶 lol.
I love watching your channel but I’m wondering if your friends in Canada have a channel so I can watch what they do for gardening in Canada.
    Blessings and thank you!

We have mullein growing wild all over the place on my farm. My momma used to call it Indian tobacco.

Just want you to know that you are both an inspiration!!
Thank you for your transparency. Life is never perfect, and despite the yellow bean seed company issue, you shared the bountiful blessing of other crops. I appreciate what you share so that I can glean more to do better here in NH.
    Love and care,

Thanks for sharing your knowledge - beginning gardener here with lots to learn. How frustrating about the beans. Mullein is an awesome medicinal plant for coughs, and you can smoke it too. They get huge here in MA. You can use the seeds too, Didn't know you could use the leaves for toilet paper - let's hope not!

I got bush snap beans from a reliable supplier who I have bought from for years. Tendrials started on some of the plants which was weird. Now I can see that they are crossed with lima/butter beans. I wasn't going to tell them about it but your experience has changed my mind.

Mullein !!! I need to grow that too! I learned about it a few months ago when we were having respiratory problems. We got it from our herb lady. Wonderful stuff!

Sweet relish, use the brine from bread and butter pickles, chop fine. Add mayo and serve over fish.

Wow... That seed pack looked like floor sweepings to me... Like where they dropped seed all day as they packaged orders and at the end of the day sweep up the floor and package it up for the last order of the day...

zuchinni idea: grind zuc in blender, drain juice. Mix zuchinni with ground turkey for awesome, tender turkey burgers. Season as you like.

I didn't know I had mullen on my property! Thank you! I'll let a few grow out to make sure, but how exciting! I definitely have lambs ear, but didn't know about mullen.

So glad I watched this today; we live in Florida and are going to be taking down a good-sized cedar tree very soon. We are going to save the wood; some of the limbs will be used to make canes; we will be sure to get them stripped of bark ASAP!!! I so love watching your channel and I'm so glad I found you recently. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with all of us. God Bless You Both!!!
