My next door farm neighbor kid, Alex Zsigo, was killed the month I got drafted. My Army buddy, Jesse Carmona, Jr., got killed in '68. I saw 4 men die at the same time in Vietnam and did not know their names. The government people were terrible to us. So, I got all those fancy degrees and found out all about the criminal class.

Arkansas Traveler is a smaller smooth-skinned slicing tomato, and indeterminate . . . so your two taller plants look like probable candidates! Love the apple tree story . . . people have no idea how much information has been lost (or in some cases buried) over the years!

Great apple tree story! The September equinox each year (where day and night are equal in most places on Earth, for that date) is probably the day the lovely lady was talking about. This year it will fall on September 23, so get those cuttings ready ☺ Here in Australia I'd probably have to wait till March 21, 2023 equinox, for the same effect, given reversed seasons. But I'll try both equinoxes as an experiment to see what works. 👍🏻

I don't have the option of raising "true to cultivar" plants as I just don't have the yard to keep plants adequately separated. But that's ok. My mindset is that, if it grows something edible, I'll take that as a win and keep on planting.
Same here ! I buy some heirloom seeds, some to plant and some to save…..just in case we need to just plant one kind to save seeds

Nice black berry. The easier way to find them hornworms is at night with a blacklight. Them things glow in the dark. Pretty kewl. That's terrible on these seeds. We expect to get what we plant.
Mr. Danny, talking about Bonnie plants---- last year I bought a 4 pack of straight neck squash. 2 turned out to be squash, 1 was a egg plant and the 4th was a ornamental gourd.
I have bought very few Bonnie plants this year.
My grandmother on my mother's side was a full blooded Cherokee Indian Medicine Woman. She taught my mother alot of the old Indian ways about herbs and barks from trees and things like that. I wish we had these wonderful elderly women here with us now. God bless you and Mrs Wanda

Years ago, Bonnie plants had an issue with their tomatoes and they spread blight all over the SW. Convinced me to always start my own.
Last year I worked at a local greenhouse, if they didn't have the right tag for a variety, they would use something similar because "most people wouldn't know the difference."

Always good to see yawl and learn all kinds of new things. Your lemon grass looks great! Gardening here in central Texas for 30 years and this year it's been very difficult. Hot and dry and we are doing everything we can to keep the garden alive and producing. Spraying everything with seaweed to assist the plants with the extreme hot weather and it seems to be helping. Temps are going back into the 100's, please pray for us for much needed rain. Many blessing to yawl. Mike & Rochelle
Danny the 3 tomatoe plants you got from town probably what happened was someone put one in the wrong 3 pack, its happened to me several times. People pick over those plants so much and did a switch a roo lol. Love talking with the elderly they are so full of knowledge and wisdom.

We planted Roma tomatoes we got from a local nursery and they turned out to be cherry tomatoes.
I think the lemon grass is trying to tell you it wants to be planted under the apple tree. 😉

Just bag some of the blossoms to prevent the cross pollination. The more round tomatoes on the 2 plants look like the Arkansas Traveler
I routinely bag my tomatoes for saving seeds. Then I'm out there with the electric toothbrush till the fruit sets.
Then I put red ribbons on my seed tomatoes/squash/ peppers etc. So I know to harvest seed from it.
The whole family knows not to harvest my red ribbon fruits/veg.
The birds were on a trip. 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Thanks for sharing your knowledge, I love it.
I loved the apple 🍎 tree story my grandfather shared a lot of his wisdom with me till he passed and I’d say the tree has to do with the fall equinox which happens normally in September but when night and day are equal I loved watching your video lots of wisdom for us younger folks I’m in Mississippi and just love your homestead it’s lovely 😊
I'm thinking that too, about the equinox - he said Sept. 21 for that year, right? And that date does change slightly back & forth. Might be worth the experiment! Wish the lady had told him how she picked the day - but I think you're right about the day & night hours.
I bought a zucchini squash start one year, you only need one here. Well, it grew beautifully and sprouted my first ever spaghetti squash. I had never eaten spaghetti squash, but I liked it so much that now I grow at least four plants per year. Can't be mad about that mishap lesson.
Also, I am often jealous of y'all at Deep South Homestead. You are out there harvesting beautiful veg and I am finally planting in 40 degree weather this week (zone 5). Then I see those tomato worms and I am praising Jesus I live where the evils of the garden die in the winter or just don't exist at all. That smaller tomato plant looks like a mortgage lifter which is an heirloom. It puts out really big tomatoes.

Good morning Minny and Wanda, I have 2 different long beans growing from seeds purchased 2 yr ago. Enjoy your day.
From what I read tomatoes don't have to be as far apart as other plants because they mostly pollinate themselves by the wind. Online it says 10-50 feet separation. I've separated mine by 20-30 feet for the past 15 years and collected seed. Working on adding an additional garden to the front yard so I can separate them further. I live in a rural area but it's a 3 street subdivision on a half acre.
They are perfect flowers. They can be side by side and cross pollination is rare.
It is just so sad to me how much knowledge has been lost and the worst part is that most people could care less as long as they can go to the store.

Those hornworms make great catfish bait. Used to pick them off of our tomatoes and our tobacco plants.
In my town I found that Ace Hardware is the most economical place to buy vegetable plants, but I noticed that when some customers are going thru the plants to pick the ones, they want they shuffle the containers and markers around and could easily mix them up.. I usually start my plants inside from seeds and move them outside when it warms up enough but this year i got lazy ( I'm 74 ) and thought I would buy my plants .BIG Mistake .
PS has anyone noticed the price of the bigger single potted Bonnie Plants. I won't buy them. It would cost me around $400.00 To plant my usual !00 tomato plants
Bonnie plants has taken over all the retail stores. I won't buy them. 4.69 per plant.
So little pride in work today. I was taught to always do my best, no matter how big or small the job is. Even though I'm on a tight budget, I now buy seeds from trusted sources, and pay more for them. Buying from a big box or dollar store is a crap-shoot.
Danny & Miss Wanda I am currently saving my own seeds from harvest this year- the plants all came from last years saved seeds. The cherry tomato seeds are exactly the same taste etc as last years so I am very excited. Also re-saving pumpkin seeds from my last year seeds planted & harvested this year again.You re teaching s so much- Thank You. Cheers Denise- Australia

The hornworms tore my tomatoes up over 2 days! I pulled 5 off of a few plants , thought I’d gotten them all … nope! I went ahead and harvested all of the green tomatoes and yanked the plants out. Going to start more for a small fall crop … but w the grand solar minimum, the freezes may get them early 🙄 … heading to Charlie’s U-pick Thursday to make sure I have plenty. Hopefully, theirs are ok this year! 💚Mims

When bluejays divebomb you, it's most likely that you are standing close to where their nest is located. I remember in high school, we had just moved to a new house, and it had a large backyard that had a gentle slope all the way down to where there was a small creek. There were some mature pine trees that flanked the sides of the backyard, halfway down it. And above those, a bit closer to the house were two holly bushes/trees. It was around this time of year, and we had the kitchen window open. We heard this commotion outside, birds squawking and it was getting closer and louder. Mom looked out the window and our tuxedo cat "Misty" was darting from tree to tree, trying to get cover as she tried getting up the backyard. She would run hunkered down a bit, trying to stay low to the ground. Every time she would make a run to the next tree, a couple of bluejays would just divebomb her. And squawk their heads off. We had to go out and get her, she at one point just froze still under the Holly tree! She didn't venture down the backyard for a week or so. Stayed on the breezeway, porch off the kitchen.
You can put a blossom bag around brand new flowers that haven't opened yet. When they open, shake the branch with the flowers to pollinate them. Once the tomatoes show themselves, you take the bag off, tie a ribbon or string around that branch so you remember where they are, and save the seeds from those tomatoes.
That’s what I’m gonna do with my giant crimson :)

I know they suck for tomatoes but those horn worms grow into lunar moths which are beautiful. They retain their beautiful green colors and some years we have many and some years we have none.. Well, now where am I going to plant 5 different tomato varieties? We are blessed with wild blackberries all over the property and if every bloom sets fruit this year its going to be a good year. Living in Maine there's no shortage of wild blueberries, elderberry, and raspberries either. But I will say here it is almost June and things are just getting started. Lord forgive me but I do envy those in the south.
Had a problem here in missouri with Bonnie plants they had all the yellow pepper plants labeled as butter nut squash at a local Wal-Mart
You could still isolate and collect seeds from both--there should be plenty of time left in the year. Take cuttings from the indeterminate plants and plant them elsewhere. Once you're sure the cuttings have established in the new spot, terminate the established indeterminate plants in the garden and remove all existing fruit and flowers. Of course, it's possible than none of the plants are Arkansas Traveler tomatoes.

I haven't had any tomatoe worms in over 30 years! I've been truly blessed with no pests on my tomatoes.
Those berries look delish! We have had issues with stink bugs this year! They are even getting in the house! We haven't seen those in years either! We normally have issues with those Japanese Beetles horribly!
Consider yourself lucky. I wave a tomato plant and they seem to come crawling....
Yes, the beetles....they love invasive bamboo plants so I left them there in the yard and the beetles don't touch my garden in return.
Jomama, you must practice good natural control. Turning the soil in early fall, getting rid of the pupae, and planting a cover with nitrogen producing plants make the difference. Again, turning the soil in the spring makes a difference for me. Beneficial wasp make a difference too. Marigolds and dills lure them away. Everybody does things differently, but I don't have time hunting for hornworms or using poison.
@@fastsetinthewest I don't do anything special except leave the last layer of fall leaves on the ground and turn the soil early spring, a month or so before planting. Put some Epsom salts in the soil as its turned. Not much at all. And some worm castings when I plant. I didn't even know what a stink bug was until this year when 3 of them got into my house! I haven't found any on my plants yet so hoping it was a fluke.

Had similar results from a Bonnie Ark Trav -- just small plants with strange tomatoes. Never saw so many mislabeled plants & seeds from different sources, as I'm seeing this year.

Looks great guys. I wish I had more time for my garden. When you work a 9 to 5 job you just can not be with it as much as a person should but it is doing pretty good with what time I do get to put in to it.
In the future you will have to depend on it or do without eating.

Unfortunately, not sharing it is the reason such wisdom is lost.
Most people don't share knowledge of something because they realize others aren't interested..someone in the comments said it being the equinox that causes that to happen...according to them, it happens on the 23rd of September this year but do some research into it
@@cocomochalatte5937 I read the comment about the equinox but that was their guess. The opportunity was lost to share the wisdom learned, for those that might have been interested. Perhaps it will be shared on Patreon or in a book.

@@barbaratucker7125 I love Danny and Wanda. I'm not the most tactful person, I admit that, but he said there is only 1 day a year and it changes from year to year. He knows the day. It would seem the fall equinox would be most likely but he didn't say that. And then what specific day during the equinox? I'm not even planting apple trees so this definitely doesn't even apply to me but I was left feeling like I was taken by the old man in the State Farm commercial where he has a dollar on the end of his fishing pole, "You almost had it but you gotta be quicker than that!" 😆🤣

I understand the frustration about the seeds. Last year I planted what supposed to be yellow crookneck squash and it ended up being spaghetti squash. Which we don’t like. Grrr This year I tried a new cucumber. The munchinger. Planted 5 of them. All came up and one looked different. I just watched them and now I have a yellow squash growing with the other 4 cucumbers. It’s like whoever is packing seeds just finds random ones occasionally and throws them in another pack. I am trying for the first time this year to save seeds (after 35 years of gardening) and now I’m unsure if I’ll ever have true vegetables. Either way, I’m not cutting anything down as I feed too many people to waste any vegetables.

Danny, I would venture a guess as to what happened. An employee at the local store, probably a high school kid, ended up combining plants from two sets of cell packs or if they were in individual pots, the labels got mixed up. I'm sure the kid had no idea how much it matters. As to saving seeds.... You can buy Arkansas Traveler seeds from quite a few online companies. I would just buy a pack and either start them in another area of the farm or save them for next year.
Julia Hovey is right, smaller, smooth and grow in clusters. The two on the right. Three years ago, rain drowned out a half dozen of out tomato plants. I went to the local green hose and bought a half dozen Amish Paste to replace the others; All came up cherry- disappointing. God Bless and stay safe.

I only buy plants from my locally owned garden center as they start all their veggie plants. I’ve always gotten what I purchased. Their plants are always healthy and vigorous. My neighbors always tell me how much money I could save if I bought from the big box stores. Yeah. Right. You get what you pay for v
I am getting more and more glad that I have seed saved from years back. As long as it’s still viable, I have a much better chance of getting when I thought I bought, and I WILL be saving seed!

My lemon grass came back in the spring after I harvested last fall (I didn't take the roots out of what I wasn't going to use because I wanted to mulch the dried heads). I live in the Piedmont North Carolina. God bless y'all!!!

Those blackberries look so good! My son has been picking the wild dewberries out at his grandparents place so I have some in the freezer, but I prefer those big ole blackberries like you have.

wow, that is really cool out. Here in florida, it was 78 degrees, at around 80 percent humidity by 7am. I am growing potatoes in our above ground beds. We do have those pesky white flies. They trash all the leaves fast. Good information, thank you.

Get some party favor sheer fabric bags and put them around your tomato flowers before they open, then when they open shake them occasionally. Save the tomato seeds from them. You can control cross pollination in many fruits and vegetables using this method, though beans, corn ect are another story.

I'm a tomato breeder. Most tomatoes do not cross pollinate because the stigma is encompassed within the anther cone. It does sometimes, but not as often as you might expect. A flower has both male and female parts in the flower so most self-polliniate. If you want to save seed, it's really easy. First, the two indeterminate tomatoes are the Traveler tomato. If you want to make sure your seed is true, bag a few buds just before they open. You can use a ziploc bag or small paper bag or anything similar. Once the flower opens (check daily), take the bag off, and tap the flowers several times easily to pollinate the flowers and put the bag on. You'll only need to do that for about 3 days and there you go, you'll have true seed in the fruit. I have tons of tomatoes right next to each other and this is what I do. I actually use very small white fabric pots and a twist tie. Very cheap on Amazon. If saving seed is of interest to you, and you want to make sure, it's very cheap insurance.

Cross pollination is something that us trying to homestead and save seeds in a urban setting have to deal with so for us we grow different things to see what we really like then kinda focus on growing that variety. I'm always impressed with your gardens. Your chickens must have different appetites than mine when it comes to tomatoe worms, mine won't touch them things.
Actually, tomatoes have perfect flowers, like okra. Cross pollination is rare, you almost have to manually do it (force it)
