I am trying to grow lima beans this year. Our weather here in Ohio has not been on our side so far. Deer ate my garden last year, so this year I fenced it in and bought deer netting to put over the top. They stand there at night staring at the garden like they are puzzled. I love watching them.

What you're doing is wonderful!! I didn't enter because truly I have so many seeds. Probably not as much as y'all. But, I'm good. I didn't want to take them away from someone who might really need them. I loved the way you explained your OCD about saving them. LOL I guess I'm a little that way myself. Y'all have a blessed day!!
Oh and It's too early to tell. But, it looks like that hurricane may go up instead of over to the gulf. But, it can change on a dime. At any rate, I hope it stays out in the Atlantic and doesn't come ashore anywhere.

In Israel we would wake up very early Between 4:30am and 11:00am am to get anything done because the heat and sunlight in the middle of the day was too extreme. We also had no airconditioning back in the 1970's. Everyone would take a Siesta between 2:00- 4:00 pm then get up tp work in the evening before bedtime. That way you ccould be productive and pace yourself with the afternoon rest. There was a saying in the Middle East : " Only Made dogs and Englishmen go out into the noon day sun. The Old Farmer's Alamnac sad that the center states would suffer drought conditions this summer 2023. Take care.

Congratulations to all! You just gave me a thought, Mr. Danny! In case of emergency, have bartering items, cash and seeds plus a sturdy set of clothes on your back ready to go. Makes more sense than buying bunches of stuff to sit around the house and try to pack. Yes, it would take a while to grow. But, it would be security.

Hi Danny and Wanda. I appreciate you sharing about seed saving.
I know your still busy picking for the seeds and have to be diligent.
I'm glad so far the storms have continued to pass you by. It's giving you more time to get seeds.
Blessings to Angela for coming up with the idea of a seed give away.
This will be a blessing for all those who get these seeds. Even if in a different area one will have to
take into consideration the different areas.
Yeah to all the winners of the seeds and plants. I'm excited and hope to hear how the seeds do for them in times
    to come.
These seeds will help the winners to supplement their seeds they have and in this day and age this is a huge thing.
I'm glad your talking about saving seeds that are more uniform in size. Makes very good sense to me.
It's good to know about the peas and corn and the worms.
in the event things go stupid and very well might having the bean seeds will be a plus if needed in addition to having them
    to plant.
Thank you both and so appreciate what you share.
    Rich blessings to you both.

I’ve found here in Ohio, that when I let my beans dry on the plants, they end up shriveled up to almost nothing and/or get mildew or mold on the pods & often also the seeds. And the seeds were mostly small or tiny. So a few years ago I started picking the pods when they’re mostly yellow, but full size. Then I lay them out in the house to dry. Actually, 2 years ago, I started pulling open the yellow pods while still pliable and it’s SO much easier on my fingers & fingernails! Then I leave the seeds out on a plate for a few weeks to finish drying & hardening up. This has provided me with higher quantity, larger, better quality bean seed than I used ever get.

Didn’t get my garden planted til the middle of May this year because of weather. And Yelp I be saving my seeds to for next year . Thanks for all y’all’s videos. I will saw for some unknown reason my poor sweet potato’s slips I grow and the ones I got from Hoss Tolls are the saddest looking plants I have in the garden. And I noticed today my squash are blooming with all females . Never remember that ever happening before. I’ve always had the male blooms then the females but not 2023.

Do the same sorting here after each seed harvest. Usually somewhere in late fall though, because that week or two out to dry ends up just, ahem, a touch longer... We do keep the second best rejects. Although our selection process starts (after the plant qualities itself) with the length and form of the seed pod, in both beans and southern peas. So some look perfectly fine, but we use those for problem years.
When the best your going to get for the season is an eating harvest, due to timing, human or other illnesses, whatever. Grab the reject batches and plant those, saving the best seeds for another year. Knowing it doesn't matter if they aren't extra long and straight, or if they develop unbalanced pods in high heat, or whatever the reason the saved seeds were second string. Same with the melons and squashes, etc.
We don't select sort that much with space crazy seed production plants. Like the jurassic bush looking swiss chards, but if those plants are making seeds it was because that plant performed amazing, and we are promising it a legacy. Those are only sorted for basic quality, and size.
Good video series! Hope more people look into these things, and consider them. I've received many tiny seed packets from small sellers, at high prices, that barely look fit to soak as animal feed. Much less use as my breeding starter stock of seeds, for that variety.

Along those lines even if you have multiple varieties and such where you wont have pure varieties put some of the seeds back. If it comes down to it and you NEED seeds they will still grow and get you food. Might not be the same thing it started out as (especially thinking of squashes/melons) but it will be food.

We have some strands of field peas here in NC that I haven't seen in seed books or store's. One is September peas. A old man saved these seeds every year until he died in 2020. He would say you can plant them when you want but the peas will be ready in September. I noticed he was right. I have some of this stand of pea for my own use. The other stand is a one hill pea which I have managed to get also. I plant Dixie Lee, Mississippi Silver, Top pick Pinkeye Purple hull, Red ripper also but there nothing like the peas I mentioned earlier.

congrats winners! :) I've also had 2012 seeds be viable this year, but I noticed the germination is 50 percentish. Danny & Wanda you guys are very sweet to offer the giveaway seeds :)
