@@lkjkhfggd it's very much not a spectator friendly category, beyond the initial shock of seeing it done. But it's really incredible from the game science perspective, and that's where it's merit really lies in terms of being able to appreciate it
@@lkjkhfggdtbh i dont get why anyone watches speedruns anyway like its cool theyvexist, the science behind some glitches is interesting but watching ppl do something over and over and over and over and over and over is boring no matter what it is
@@leaffinite2001 well, I don't get why anybody watches anybody live streaming video games at all. I like to see speed runs on TH-cam, where they've uploaded their best run. If you played the video game as a kid and it took like 30 hours to beat, seeing someone beat it in 1 hour is mind blowing.
Must of been so stressful having the trick fail again and again in front of a massive crowd like that, them clapping along and cheering when it was successful was really cool, even though it wasn't fast the crowd got really into it, awesome to see.
Fun fact, this glitch started a new issue for the OOT speedruns while resolving a previous issue at the same time, as the GIM glitch was responsible for the eventual fade in popularity of the iQue (a rare chinese-only nintendo system that many were opposed to, citing it as an unhealthy limitation to the category due to the difficulty picking one up) as a preferred device to speedrun on.
That GDQ run has got to be heartbreaking I can't imagine being in that position knowing the game is cursing you with the worst possible RNG in front of thousands of people...
Well the worst possible RNG would be if he kept trying that for the rest of Eternity without getting a single Deku nut, so when you think about it he was really lucky :)
I love how GIM is such a hard trick but it's 100% consistent in terms of RNG. The Defeat Ganon No SRM route that does GIM twice now is some of the highest skill expression in Ocarina of Time ever
I started following OoT shortly before all this, good memories. I used to hang out in Joden and then Skater streams. I remember an old skater stream that could make a cool random glitch video. He’s in forest temple climbing up the well vines and unequips iron boots a frame before emerging from the water. Boom, antigravity glitch and link is sidehop flying around. This was especially cool before srm completely broke everything. Plus it was super simple and even I could do it first try
Wait, why can't bottle duplication be used to get a second bottle in this case? That would definitely allow for two bottles, and it's a very easy glitch to do, even for casual players.
J you should do a video on Tak and the Power of Juju speed runs! It’s a 3D platformer on GameCube with a small but awesome speedrun scene! Love your videos! :)
Hot take, but that GDQ disaster is entirely the organizers' fault. That run should not have been accepted. An 85% failure rate that will kill a run is the furthest thing from marathon safe.
The GDQ run could've been worse... It could be watching someone messing up a Windwaker pause buffer multiple times... You couldn't pay me to watch another Windwaker speedrun after suffering through that.
Great vid!! Loving the BGM choices, too--Ocarina of Time, BoTW, Chrono Trigger... and is that the Mage Duel theme from Yu-Gi-Oh! Forbidden Memories at 12:30?!
Just sayin, any time I hear Chrono Trigger music, I pay attention. Good inclusion, man. Great video, good hook, and solid info. Learned some new things on this video. Subbed

Keep up the awesome videos man! I don’t do any speed running my self besides a 16 star run for SM64, but I don’t do it very fast😂 but all of these videos are so interesting and entertaining to watch! Love the videos!
Why did noone take action when the once-so-popular speedrun category started to die because of this glitch? They could have simply banned the glitch from Any%-runs, created a new category on the leaderboard or even allowed the usage of cheats/a modded ROM of the game to ensure a 100% success rate on the RNG-dependant element.
Nut drop, get item manipulation process.. that's a lot of stuff to remember so I like to take short cuts and abbreviate things. Especially with the get item manipulation process. GIMP but nut drop is 2 syllables so I just say nut drop and GIMP... what?
Those odds are so huge. Would never happen with just a couple people watching but hundreds of thousands of people watching and hoping and cheering...... I'm seriously wondering if quantum luck and the observer effect actually had something to do with the results. That's astounding
the main thing that pissed me off about the gdq run was people domated for a name, and he didn't use it. just using "J." that's when I said fuck him and never watched him again. he cared more about a time then he did the event raiser.
There’s a world of speed running. You guys won’t know about .. I’m heavily debating posting gameplay of what I unintentionally ended up speed running as a person who’s ripped gaming in 2010 when my Jiji committed suicide. There’s a lot of unrecorded depressed people with insanity syndrome, that got some out right Life after death style situations that end up becoming as but a mental strain as what happens at GDQ2015… I’ll be real a lot of people need to post up and story up about the dread personally and virtually that’s gone down in just the weird Times
For me this will go down as one of the worst routes in speedrun history. Any% was quite unwatchable at the time, but historically it's amazing to look at its existence.
top 3 worst of all time are probably iQue any%, this, and Wii U MM any%, which is hilarious seeing as they’re all either this game or the one other game on the same engine
I kind of hate any percent of this for a few reasons... but mostly how years of speedrunning glitches and tech just kind of disappear from the game. I hope a no wrong warp category becomes popular one day... for all games
No Wrong Warp is a really cool category I wish was more popular. It’s basically 2011 any% but with double GIM to skip the Light Arrow cutscene (longest cutscene in the entire game!)
Wait hold up so This game had TWO GLITCHES that almost killed the speedrunning scene of it???? The wrong warp with the 11th owl statue and this...... Bruv what
Only reason shit like this was super popular was because homies like me had nothing to watch after we came home from the back breaking labor. Glad Ontario is upping the immigration here super hard so I cant complain.
Some advice for speed viewers; If ONE little bad rng section in an entire speedrun makes it unwatchable for you.. you shouldn’t be watching speedruns at all. Cause I got some bad news for you, this isn’t even the top 50 of bad rng sections I’ve seen in speedruns. There’s plenty of runs where you gotta reset for hours before you get a run with good rng. To each their own of course it’s just absurd we’re acting like this is the worst thing to happen to speedrunning… a single low rng chance section….
with stuff like this you always have to ask shouldn't we just allow hacking to guarantee things like this. some luck based things are ok like when you need to farm drops of enemies that random drop chance is just time added to the run, but these tricks will be reset for until you get them first try so if everyone anyways only plays past if it is first try why not remove all the other runs before they even get played so that more palyers attempt this
Except that retrying RNG is a part of speedrunning culture basically. You want to change how the whole thing works to make it more viewable for you. I think it should be allowed at GDQ though
