  • Uh oh.
Next day after diagnosing the "VSA" light on this 2010 Honda Ridgeline, the owner called me to say that two MORE warning lights are on his dash...the "Check Engine" and "VTM-4"!
Let's take another look at this troublesome Honda and see if there is another issue with this car...I mean "truck" :)
    Enjoy!

The short fuel trim went from 20+ down to 10ish. The intake tube needs replacement and the vehicle needs the PCM reset. More driving will relearn it to do well again. I think you overanalyzed this one, but good job anyhow. I like your work and your personality. 10 and even in the teens is fine for short fuel trim especially when overcoming a gross vacum leak. Especially in short trim. You need to reset the PCM and then drive it a while. Its fixed. Good Job. You should charge for the diag and duct tape anyway. This was a valuable diagnosis. They can now get the part and easily replace it themselves or have you or someone else.

My 05 Acura did the same thing. Snorkel tore, fuel trims went nuts. I too had to reset the ECU in order for it to keep the light off, and relearn, after I replaced the intake rubber inlet air pipe. It just wouldn't learn by itself! Good vid!

as a side note, I always check the motor/trans mounts when I find a torn air tubes. brake torquing, going from forward to reverse or rocking them back and forth on a flat surface, while in park/off.
I also find all sorts of bad suspension and drive-line issues by rocking.
that one was so dry rotted it would have torn with everything else good anyway.

Wow, that hose was smoked! Used to see stuff like that all the time in Phoenix, where the heat just destroyed anything made of plastic or rubber. Sand also blasted the glass pretty bad, too, especially during monsoon season. Up here, the salt destroys the metal. Can't win for losing with automobiles!
Glad you showed this one - I've had this happen to me, and I was flipping out. Cleared the codes, and bam - fixed! WTH!! 😁

Car bodies love Phoenix, but upholstery, plastics, rubber, and batteries hate it. Lived there for 25 years and never had an under-hood battery survive three summers. The afternoon it was 122F I hit the starter and was rewarded with a "pop" and vapors from under the hood - the battery had exploded!

I have seen several cases of unexplained high fuel trims on Honda J35's (around 10-15% on both ST and LT.) Each time I'd ruled out vacuum leaks and MAF. In my own limited experience, replacing the O2's has fixed it in every case. So, if the car is in the mid 100K mile range then it's time for new O2's, including the downstreams. Honda does use downstream O2's for fuel strategy.

I have a 2012 ridgeline and during cold weather the rpm tends to surge between 1100 to as low as 400 rpm and it will not give a code right away , if it gets worst the rpm will get faster surging then will trip the check enfine light along with vtm4 vsa mulfunctions then if its warm weather its fine .. but what i notice the FUEL TRIM in the dash board its high for me its ranging between 18 to almost 20 liters per 100 kmh... its just getting worst during cold season

Believe it or not, you can take a clean old t-shirt, a putty knife, and black rtv, remove the air tube, clean it with alcohol, apply a whole tube of rtv to the T-shirt, spread it even and thin, then wrap the tube. Wax paper or piece of cardboard HIGHLY recommend. It won't fly on a concourse car, but it's effective, and lasts. Oh, yea, and price....

Thank you for that info. What is the purpose of a heated crankase vent? Avoid clogging?

    • @ThePracticalMechanic
      @ThePracticalMechanic 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

I never really thought about why honda and some fords heat the PCV and crankcase vent hoses but my guess would be this. The Crankcase vent and PCV get vapors from the top of the engine which include water vapor as the engine warms up. In cold weather the water vapor could condense and then freeze causing a restriction in the line. If the line gets plugged you could end up with leaking oil seals. Hope this helps.

So my 08 Acura (Honda) Runs very similar at times. At idle I can see my short terms going 8-15% and my longer term getting higher. However when I start to drive it even its out eventually. I think it is Honda's strategy, after I reset the data it goes back to normal for a bit. I'm assuming until all the tests have ran. I do have more factors in my car like a Short ram intake and maybe working cats. That's why I'm surprised to see a Honda with none of those factors.

James Fenton is absolutely right. If the check engine light is on the right way it so take 10 min or more to look everything under the wood (because every proper mechanic knows that engine light on means the issue is surely under the hood ...) rather than take 1 min to read the code and have a direction to look closely. After checking under the hood, you read the code and swap the more probable part. It will not fix the problem so you swap another part. And so on. That's how works a proper mechanic. Ivan how dare you diagnose an issue ?

Lol, always a critic, good job on diagnostic Ivan. Issue was found, doesn't matter how you got to it-enough said.

No, you are wrong. If there's a check in light, you scan first. Always.

That what i figured after i watch him do it in the bonus footage. The first couple times i seen it happen i thought he just gave it a little bit of throttle but in the bonus footave u see him give it a bit of throttle and its stays in cl then when he puts wot it goes to ol. Is this a honda stratagie or does all manufacturers do this. Ive never really noticed.

Hi Dylan, most cars go to Open Loop at WOT for more power delivery with a richer mixture.

For a tag line, you could play on pronunciation like "I Vin again" - I win again ; Ivan again... (slinking away...)

Now, you can come up with your own brand of duct tape!!
You can call it pigeon tape! In keeping with naming you maintenance adhesive roll after water foul!! McGyver tape is already taken!

It amuses me people use the word 'footage' in relation to digital video. No feet of film was ever used to make it, so where does the additional 'footage' come from?

Tried duct tape before on with a similar problem on another brand- complete waste of time-only answer was new tube , needs to be completely sealed that’s why they have hose clamps on ends
