- What is Honda VTM-4 Light and why does it stay on?
The Honda VTM-4 (Variable Torque Management 4 Wheel Drive System)
There can be differences between Honda years, so be sure to read the manual for your specific Honda.
When there is an engine problem, the computer (ECM) shuts down VTM-4 system.
It works automatically by adjusting how much torque is applied to the rear wheels depending on how much traction they are getting.
When there is normal driving conditions, only front wheel drive is used.
When the vehicle detects that the rear wheels are losing traction, the VTM-4 system will send more torque to whichever wheel needs it, whether it be one or both.
The VTM-4 lock button locks the rear differential to force the vehicle to send power to the rear wheels.
The VTM-4 lock will disengage when the vehicle reaches roughly 18mph.
It is not suggested to turn the VTM-4 lock on dry, flat roads, and/or above 15mph, as doing this could damage the vehicle.
What To Do if VTM-4 Light Stays On?
Scan for other codes which will point to the problem.
For example, if a C003A Code - Right Rear Wheel Speed Sensor is given, there likely is bad speed sensor.
Great video, clear and to the point!!
Thank you so much for the video
Thank you for the video.
Great information
Very helpful.
Appreciate this video very knowledgeable
Thanks for info to understand operations. Im thinking low oil and bad spark plugs on customers 330,000 mile 2013 pilot. Extreme poor maintenance causing these lights.
Thank man ur video
helped me a lot
So basically just check it with the computer and then go from there afterwards?
thank you, i have VSA VTM4 SHOW UP WHILE DRIVING but it despairs when the ignition is off/on , sometimes the dashboard meters go down also, there are no codes, can you please help
So if I thought all the valve gasket seals replaced, I’ve done the sensors the catalytic converter the differential fluid all the spark plugs. Why won’t the engine light turn off because it’s the same error code over and over and over again and I’ve replaced the same thing.
Coil packs , cam sensor, crank sensor , valve adjustment, knock sensor, egr valve, pcv valve, ect sensor would all be changed if I bought second hand
Timing belt and component kit as well
Great video thanks for sharing. I just bought a 09 pilot ex-L I have two codes p2197 and p1174, on calls for a o2 sensor the other calls for an AF sensor . Are they the same? Also I googled it it show these have four sensors but it doesn’t show a diagram of where they are located. Any help would be appreciated
Hola amigo mi carro me mostro los mismos sensores que el tuyo, podrias decirme porfavor si solucionaste eso y si sabes cuales de los 4 sensores remplasaste ?
My 2004 Honda Pilot had the VTM-4 come on long before the check engine and it turned out to be a misfire.
so eventually the CEL came on? All my lights are on but no CEL so it's not scanning.
Toyota tundra 4wd servo causes that same stuff also a vss
This vtm4 like came on and after 5 min of driving shuts down the engine on a 2003 Honda Pilot.
Does your car still run, I have the same exact problem with the same exact car

Super helpful! We just had a repair on our front car right hand wheel 🛞… could this light have something to do with that? 🤨
Спасибо ❤

So if it’s on, that means it’s not working?
If the VTM light remains on - I'm wondering the same thing. Does that mean it is not working. No answers here yet. Maybe someday.
Someday is a long time to be stuck . . .
As stated in the video, the VTM-4 light is illuminated when the system is turned off. When VTM-4 is disabled (light on), it runs in front wheel drive only. It doesn't necessarily mean something is wrong with the VTM-4 system or PCM. As stated in the video, general codes that indicate stability issues will also disengage the system (misfires, etc). Chances are you have an engine light or ABS light on.
Either way, get the codes scanned, and you'll know why the computer is shutting the system down. The basic scanners like they use at AutoZone don't scan all systems, they only scan for generic codes. So you may need to have a mechanic with a higher end scan-tool, or the dealership diagnose the issue depending on the modules affected.
