  • The owner of this clean 2010 Honda Ridgeline tells me that the orange "VSA" light comes on intermittently while driving.
    Well, let's hook up the scanner and see why this Honda is fussing. Along the way we learn quite a few things...that's the PHAD way!
    Enjoy!

    I had a Jeep do this once. The steering wheel was off center about a quarter turn after installing a suspension lift kit. Wheel alignment and setting the toe fixed the problem.

    To reset the VSA module turn the car upside down, shake three times on each axis, turn it back right side up, do doughnuts for ten seconds and slam on the brakes, all without turning on the ignition.

    What to do if you have ethos scanner. You just said that knowledge is power. We learned from each other. 1) go to antilock- abs/vsa replacement- make sure car is on flat level and steering straight- switch off ignition don’t touch the brakes pedal, now turn ignition switch on abs flashing and goes off press the vsa button on and off. The abs light will come on again près vsa button on and off the vsa light will flash and goes away .

    Ivan i had this symptom on a couple on Iveco dailys. Could be the steering angle sensor is not reading zero when driving straight line. The abs system seeing all wheel sensors correct for straight line but steering is showing turning angle. Or you could have wrong size tyre on one side? Have you got a relearn option for the steering sensor.

    When diagnosing cars, check codes first. If it won't start, check for spark using a timing light. Check all plug wires to check for a bad cap and rotor and coil. Get a Actron CP9690 code tester for on the road tests. That code should give a memory code. If no codes, there may be a fuel problem or non-computer problem.

Hit the button and cleared the light. Light went out and never came back on. From what I see on TH-cam that's a finicky code that can be set by just plugging a scanner in. I was just checking fuel trims the night before with the DS808 and never drove the car. the next morning that light came on when I just started the car without driving it. Don't know if this helps but drove me nuts for days.

    When I first saw the VSA and that caution symbol I thought it was something Emission related because for some reason Toyota, Honda, and I think Subaru will turn those lights on and the problem will have nothing to do with those systems. It would be a Misfire,Evap, or O2/AFR issue. Then you did the scan none of that stuff showed. Then thought something with the ABS System speed sensor dropping out?

    I would have thought the low pressure warning for the RR might be tied to the stability aspect of it (in software?)

  • @joe2mercs
    @joe2mercs 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I guess the VSA needs to monitor relative wheel rotation and does this by reading the pulses from the ABS sensors. It would be consistent for the vehicle to monitor steering position (SAS) to accommodate the discrepancy in ABS readings from the wheels when the car when cornering. My first instinct would be check the sensors for fraying wires, bad connections or corrosion jacking of the sensor mounts, perhaps rust or dirt on the reluctor rings. Basically the system is saying that the steering position sensor and the ABS readings do not add up and this compromises the function of stability control.

    Definitely scan it with another scanner to see if it agrees with snap on. Does the VSA go active above a certain speed? Can alignment issues cause a fault? Other than that it comes down to signal integrity checks.

    If the battery was replaced recently, perform the reset procedure that super Mario diagnostics mentions. Go into scs mode, then perform the relearn. Basically theres a sensor for the vsa that looses its "nuetral" position once the battery is replaced. Pretty sure that's your issue

  • @niccocowboymetoyer2972

    I have the same issue with a 2006 Honda Pilot. The right front brake will lock up and the only way to release the pressure is to crack the bleeder valve open. I’ve replaced all brake pads, brake hoses, calipers, and recently the master cylinder. I tried bleeding the brake system but now I have no brakes at all. Any ideas.

  • @jeremystone6613
    @jeremystone6613 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    The launch system resets VSA very simply as a special function. Worth a try before spending more time.

  • @SuperMarioDiagnostics
    @SuperMarioDiagnostics 5 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    This usually applies to a code 84, but i always give this a shot when things seem a little weird. They're a reset procedure where you short pins 4 and 9 turn the ignition on, when the vsa light shuts off, push vsa button. when the light turns on again, press the button again. Then the same procedure again But with the brake pedal instead of the vsa button.
    But something tells me yours may not be the case. All we can do is guess at this point. I'd whip out the scope! Looking forward to part 2.

      One Hunnit Tech you being a Honda man, I believe you. But there are a ton of cars that will reset that data if disconnected for a second. Ever see an rx8 do that? You get the death wobble 😲

    • @williamtanner8222
      @williamtanner8222 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@EKHondaMotive most of the time on the hondas it doesnt. It wont reset learned values such as fuel trims, idle, etc, if you just swap the battery. BUT, at times, it WILL reset the learned steering angle sensor "nuetral" position. Sometimes there will be a code, and other times there won't. Performing the relearn corrects it though. I've done it on countless honda vehicles.

    • @EKHondaMotive
      @EKHondaMotive 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @William Tanner...I concur.
      There's no rhyme nor reason but I think time elapsed between "battery out" & "battery in" could be a factor. Also, if the leads were touched together...
      The biggest issue we have is the Verus can't communicate with the VSA to the depths we need now.

    I'd agree with some of the other comments. Personally I'd check tyres, steering and suspension for wear and tear. Do a full wheel alignment check then recalibrate the steering angle sensor and lateral acceleration sensor.
    It'll be interesting to see the outcome!
    I've also seen various manufacturers cutting ABS data above a certain speed, very annoying but all in the name of safety!
    Oh and VSA as far as I know is just Honda's name for ESP/ESC... it compares the steering input to the actual rate the car turns to make sure they agree.
    Does it feel like the traction control is cutting in when the fault occurs?

    @mctobbsi 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Ivan! I have seen unwanted ESP/VSA activation like during 9.13-9.22 into the video. That fault was because of incorrectly matched tires with to much difference in wheel circumference. However, if it did actually activate, you should have felt some driver feedback from the system trying to correct the non-existing skid.

    Check if the steering angle sensor reads 0 to 5 degrees with the steering wheel in the straight ahead position, if it doesn't then road wheel alignment could be out, if the wheel alignment is good, conduct a neutral position reset for the steering angle sensor. If neither of these solve the problem then steering angle sensor/wiring/module could be the cause

    • @ablackformula
      @ablackformula 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was thinking to drive the vehicle in a straight line at a slow speed and see the steering angle (should be less than 5 degrees.) This way you're testing the front toe and thrust line and steering angle all at once.

    Hard to tell from the dash/windshield view but it appears in some of the driving sequences (Assuming your driving a straight line) there is quite a bit of steering wheel offset. Is it possible VSA "sees" steering wheel not centered at speed with no accompanying lateral acceleration = fault. Is the right rear tire pressure you mention early in the piece an issue? This is something that I have been dealing with for months and it's frustrating because there is really no way to accurately diagnose this problem. The codes that you get when the VSA, check engine, triangle lights come on are not connected to the problem. You only get ghost indicators or codes. Misfires on cylinders when there is nothing wrong with any cylinders. All kinds of sensors. The problem seems to be electronic and most Honda dealers / mechanics don't want to spend the time to really find out what it causing it. Another problem is that it's intermittent. For weeks the car is driving fine. Then the check engine light comes on. Then a day later, the VSA / triangle light comes on, and the car won't run. Two days later the car drives fine.

    What criteria is met "at speed"? Wheels are rolling. Centrifugal force. Vibration. WSS? ABS tone ring loose or cracked? TPMS on (a) front wheel dropping out? If you had a large enough hill, coast down in neutral- or would PRNDL indicator know better? You checked PRNDL when parked (was wonkey) but what about driving? Snap-On is so afraid a Tech might kill or get killed while testing. BTW "Testing while driving" is a no-no in NYS AFAIK.

    Its most likely that bad tpms is what’s causing it.

    I have a feeling its linked to the shifter or cluster somehow as that was doing funky stuff P>N and D>N R>? etc on the scanner, to coincidental for it not to be related. anything in the diagrams that link them?

    If it is anything like a Toyota, it is an evap leak caused by a gas cap that needs replaced. It probably has the original gas cap.

    My wife's 2012 Odyssey I've noticed with the tpms light on (low air pressure) I can not turn off the stability control. Get tpms light to clear, you can turn off VSA. You had an inital tpms code that you cleared, and the overall code scan showed no codes -- I think it would be worth going into the actual tpms module to check for codes. Weird no tpms light comes on but I'm wondering if the 40mph deal is the tpms sensors "turning on" or something..

  • @davemcgaffney9401

    The problem sets when the car is moving. And above a certain speed...this system is tied to the abs and abs monitors the speed of each tire. The low pressure in one tire might cause a "problem" (tire pressure is monitored) and who knows the stability circuit might trigger on this above a certain speed.

    The light should go off by itself if you change the spark plugs and coil packs. The coil packs dont normally have to be replaced but its a good idea since you are replacing the plugs anyway. It is sad to see that even with expensive Snap On people still do not know anything about cars and charge customers because they pull out their gadgets. Just to tell them they dont have a clue.
