Pam's Replacement - Office Field Guide S8E7

  • Cathy’s here, Pam’s ready to get a little crazy, Jim had (spoiler) high blood pressure, and the Kevin and the Zits origin story. Pam’s Replacement has got a little of everything we didn’t need, and remains entirely inconsequential. But funny nonetheless…

Think Jim made the right choice though he could have just said she's attractive but, so what? But, given Pam's state, he probably made the right move. Also, as someone who's been with my wife for over a decade, there's not enough focus in popular media on physical lust moving into romantic love. It's either you're always hopping into the sack every chance you get, or you're about to head to divorce town. No wonder media has screwed so many people up?!

It does kind of help establish the main relationship conflict between Jim and Pam, which is that Jim has tremendous trouble being open and honest with Pam, sometimes for seemingly good reasons, but that's really the one thing she asks that he make a priority, and he consistently fails to deliver on.

I always thought Mike Tibbets was a doctored photo of Nelson Franklin (the IT guy... I forget his name, maybe Shadow or Garth). The general shape of the face looks like him, and taking off his hair and plumping him up is easy enough
This allows the show to avoid giving some poor boring looking guy a complex for the rest of his life. Fun fact: this same form of mercy was used with "Buzz's girlfriend" in home alone.... WUPHF!

"Pam's Replacement" was a decent but not outstanding episode. It had some funny moments and some touching ones, but it also had some flaws. The main plot of Pam trying to prove that Jim likes Cathy was a bit silly and unrealistic, and it made Pam look insecure and paranoid. The subplot of Robert joining the band was even less entertaining, but it also felt like a way to show off Robert's talents and charisma, without giving much development to the other characters. The episode had some good jokes and lines (e.g., grabbing the penis), but it also had some clichés and stereotypes. It was a typical episode of The Office, but not one of the best ones.

It's really just a judgement call and it depends on your spouse and your relationship with them. I've been in relationships where I know I could be open and honest about those types of things. I've also been in relationships where if you were open and honest about those types of things, you would open the flood gate for insecurities and hurt feelings. So I believe Jim made the correct call not answering based on what we all already know about the character Pam based on my past experiences. We know it would bother her and it would fester in the back of her mind which would then create issues in their relationship, if not right away later on in the relationship.

This episode leads the audience on the path to the lows of the Office series. The Jim/Pam A plot in the Steve Carell era would've been a B plot. The episode reveals how much the show's struggling to get it's footing in a post-Michael Scott world of the Office.
Gonna have to side with Jim, 100%. Yeah, Pam says she wants honesty from Jim, but there's absolutely no upside to him admitting her replacement is attractive. Not a good idea before Pam's pregnancy and definitely not in the final stages of the pregnancy. Dangerous territory and a no-win for Jim.

  • @jordansweet8054

The cold open was absolutely a retread of diminished returns. The episode was so mid. Pregnancy and fat jokes don't carry an episode alone. Dwight and Pam are fun, the "tests" are pretty fun but the episode is a slog. Kevin's band is okay but its not their best outing.

The hormones have control of the ship at that point and you will be doing her a favor by saying no and then quickly changing the subject to something about the baby.

11:14 the point you just made is why a lot of modern women have strange views of men. Men are supposed to be honest because we're tough and strong and the only barrier between ourselves and the truth. We aren't supposed to lie because we can fight and use our strength to uphold the truth. So what if he got into a fight about an obviously hott woman?! It sharpens our spirits we have to be strong enough to handle a discussion. I'm sure Pam would have gotten over it. Especially since she thought she was hott too.

There is no benefit to admitting she’s an attractive person. But just bc she’s attractive doesn’t mean he wants to be with her. He is absolutely in love with Pam and Cathy stands zero chance. Maybe Jim could have addressed it better, but ultimately it’s an unnecessary trap. The better way of dealing with it was just reassure Pam that she’s the apple of his eye. But at the end we see the pettiness of the whole notion of even asking that question, when they both realize the health of each other trumps everything else…because they are having another child together and their bond of being parents is more important than who each other finds attractive.
