  • On Friday, 3 February 2023 I attended the 16th annual 18th Century Artisans Show. This year’s show was held in the Carlisle Expo Center in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, and featured the work of a host of artisans and crafts-people who recreate the artifacts of the 18th century.

    My God, all those muzzle-loading longarms are so beautiful it breaks your heart to look at them! Absolutely incredible, I'd swear I was looking at originals brought back by a time traveler. And all the other crafts as well!
    Thanks for bringing us along Mike!

    I absolutely love these shows and walk through. You could make three videos of it and it still wouldn’t be enough for me. Maybe a few interviews with the craftsmen, some mention of ballpark price ranges, etc. Facts to get us interested in buying or building a long rifle like you did. These shows fill the long cold winter days when shooting is not possible!

    Thanks for the tour. Carlisle is a bit closer to me. Good to see that PA is still keeping up its heritage. It is amazing and encouraging to see that there are so many people involved in historical muzzleloading as art, target, reenactment, or hunting. People are missing out when they use modern muzzleloaders just for hunting. The romance is gone. Here in NC, anything goes with hunting muzzleloaders and I cringe at the ones that are really single shot, modern rifles, and especially the scoped ones! However, anything that gets people out to thin out our deer herds is good.

    • @wayneantoniazzi2706
      @wayneantoniazzi2706 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've always felt that if you don't use a muzzleloader that doesn't look and function like an original then what's the point? But that's just me. Hey, it's a big tent with plenty of room.

    G'Day from Australia,
    I don't think there have been any gun shows in Australia for around three years since Covid and the restrictions kicked in. What a magnificent display of 18th Century American Artisans work! I wanted to reach into the screen and grab one of the beautiful powder horns to replace the one that I foolishly sold when I gave up muzzleloading around 30 years ago. I still have the firearms and most of the accessories but no powder horn. I've decided that 2023 is the year that I resurrect my muzzleloaders--they were a lot of fun shooting targets and gongs as well as rabbit hunting with shot in my smooth bores.
    Thanks for giving us the tour of the artisans show---would have liked to have seen it in person.
    Cheers,
    Steve

    Good day to you, Sir!
    My husband is new to black powder guns, his grandfather had them but now it's his turn. 😊
    He has been watching many of the different channels on black powder but has found you to be the absolute most informative. He says to tell you THANK YOU!
    So far he has a 50 caliber Hawkins rifle with an 1851 Navy Pietta* pistol kit due to arrive this afternoon. Your videos are so informative for him along with your advice and different little "tricks".
    Between severe degenerative COPD, degenerative nerve damage in his neck and back and arthritis, he doesn't have hardly any pain free days. Your videos help distract him from what ails him and for that, I thank you.
    Kindest warm regards from the beautiful Pacific Northwest of Washington State! (please don't hold that against us) hahaha

    Effective May 1, the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission says it will no longer allow "force on force" reenactments on its sites or in its museums. Those are reenactments "that involve exchanges of weapons’ fire, the taking of casualties, hand-to-hand combat, or any other form of simulated warfare or violence between opposing forces."

    So, I'm torn a bit on the new location. On the one hand it's much closer to me - but on the other hand, I really enjoyed Lewisburg and the Country Cupboard and it's RESTAURANT! No such nice restaurant at the Expo center (that I know of anyway). But hey - it's all good! I had a conflict this year but I'm looking forward to next year. Your "whip-round" version of the show is great and because you know so many of the vendors - that helps as well. Good on ya Mike!

A QUESTION for you: I want to buy a flintlock muzzleloader that I can use both for shot and ball. Am I better served by a fowler (20 gauge) or smoothbore in .50, .54, or .58 caliber. • @duelist1954
      @duelist1954  ปีที่แล้ว

      Most of the rifles at the show are not for sale. Usually they are rifles that the builder’s clients have loaned back to them to display at the show. If you like the rifles displayed by a particular builder. You commission him to build one for you. The price will depend on how in demand the builder is, and what features you want on your rifle. Prices will run from about $3,000 up to $20,000 depending on the builder, and how fancy you want the gun.
