I have been waiting for this video, Mike. I remember drooling over this very commemorative at a local gun shop for years. I could not afford it at the time. I was named after Robert E. Lee
so you can imagine how much I wanted this. As a Boy Scout, I camped on Antietam Battlefield in September of 1962. There were thousands of surface finds of spent Minie Balls all over the cultivated field we camped upon. 100 years of plowing had brought them to the surface.

I am named after Robert E. Lee also. Better watch out they will cancel us all.

    • @Deadener
      @Deadener 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@robertlittle7407 Nah, no cancelling. Just pity. I'm so sorry you had to be named after a dude who renounced his oath to the Constitution and attacked US soldiers to preserve and expand the institution of slavery. Robert is a pretty common name, though. You can always pretend otherwise.

It was Val Forgett and his articles about black powder shooting and his pictures of him in Africa taking Dangerous Game with his black powder firearms, that was instrumental in getting me into black powder back then. There's probably only a few of us old geezers that remember Val and Navy arms.
It was he and Phil Spangenberger who inspired me to take up black powder shooting and hunting.

I never heard of these 2 guys. I'll have to check them out. I was 11 when this Colt was made and was into Hemingway, Ruark, Gene Hill, Jack O'Connor, Fred Bear, et al. It is only recently that I've gotten into BP by seeing CAS shooters use them.

Same here. I still have a Navy Arms Catalog from 1968(?) with wonderful prices on military surplus firearms and ammunition. That also got me into collecting surplus. I bought my 1st repro 1851 in Williamsburg, VA.

I had a Robert E. Lee commemorative I bought at the Log Cabin gunshop in Lodi Ohio in about 1973 or 74. I sold it when I was rebuilding a 1948 Indian Chief Roadmaster in like 1980 to pay for a new motor.

I have a Hornady ultrasonic 2 liter that's just for situations like this and after-shooting cleaning. Take it down to a pile of parts, dump em in, let em cook for 5-10 minutes. It makes what used to take 30+ minutes of manual de-greasing into a maybe 10 minute job. Worth every nickel.

At 11:30, looking at those rough revolver frames, I would say that those are forgings, not castings. A cast part will have a small part line, forged parts have wide part lines, as these do. I'm willing to bet that the barrels and cylinders are forged also. This is a good thing, forgings are generally stronger than castings.

Thanks Mike. I recently bought a second gen 1851 with the square trigger. Came in the wood box with all the components and is unfired as well. I have an 1860 army signature series as well. These are beautiful well made guns. I haven't shot the 1851 yet, and I'm almost afraid to. But they're made to be used in my opinion. By the way, I found a set of airbrush cleaning brushes at harbor freight the other day, and these things are excellent for cleaning the nipples with. I found them quite by accident. Just thought I'd let you know about those brushes cause they sure do work well.

Thanks Mike, appreciate all the information and looking forward to the next installment. I have been collecting newer Colt BP for somewhere between 15 and 20 years. I have individually cased Lee and Grant revolvers after that they are all 3rd generation which includes all the produced Navies and Armies. Missing from my 3rd Gen collection are the Dragoons, Walker and Patersons. Back when I was still buying these and production had stopped Ken Enger from Chattahoochee Black Powder Arms Co said he could still get me one of the later Patersons and sorry I never took him up on it. Not really sure what you would consider my Signature series Special Model Musket. I picked this up off the brother of the Sales Mgr. of the management team who came into Colt when they were in Chapter 11. his brother sent him two and he sold me one. I used that musket for N-SSA comp. Of the revolvers the only one I take to the range to shoot is a 3rd generation 1851 Navy.

Hi Mike, Greetings from the U.K. I enjoyed your talk on the Robert E Lee Navy Colt. I was offered the same revolver back in 1972, but it was out of reach back then. However some 30 years later l was offered the cased square back model , unfired as well.I just had to buy it.Problem is that I have 2 Uberti’s and a first generation Navy. Can’t bring myself to shoot it. Have to agree with you about the trigger guard on the square back as it does seem a bit small. The flasks for the Grant Model were originally made in Sheffield by James Dixon.

Mike!..I like watching your videos for your complete information on the, historic and new Bp firearms! I think I've seen about all you videos at least two or three times now if not more. I know I learn something each time. I love Bp firearms and own and shoot about 20 of them ( most are hand guns but there's 6 rifles). When I shoot them I shoot for accuracy! If I see you do something that makes sense in the accuracy potential department I explore that to my pistols! One of my major problem today is I can't find real black powder and for a few years now have been shooting Pyrodex P in all my pistols! I use to shoot only Swiss Bp in my pistols. I'm 76 yrs. Old now and have had at least 4 strokes and can't drive to far. I live in a small town just outside of. Phoenix, AZ. I purchase my powder thru the mail from Midway USA or Dixie Gun Works and they never never have Swiss or for that fact real BP. Years ago I could get GOEX put not now. Have you got any suggestions for me !?? About a year ago I had text Blacky Thomas about where can I find Swiss BP but never heard anything! One of the strokes knocked out my short term memory so if I watch one of your videos and see something you do that I might try I have to watch the video three or for times with paper and pencil in hand. Thank you so much for your videos and how to modifications etc. ...Love them all!!!

Beautiful pistol. Since you stated in the video you plan to shoot it. Have to ask. Can you get replacement parts ( screws, bolt, trigger and bolt spring) if you lose or break? Hate to see it become non functional. I know you know a few gunsmiths that could probably make replacement. But its a Beautiful gun.

I like black powder revolvers more than modern handguns. I have a Uberti Walker. Thinking of getting a Lemat revolver. Ugly but interesting.

They are a lot of fun.

That box is so nice. Tell me the spout on the flask being tilted, was that a regular thing in the1800s?

It was common, but not universal.

I got an 1860 Army made by Pietta. I got to thinking about what it would look like if I darkened the wood on the grip to a black. Any experience doing that? I reckon it might have a different method on account of the constant handling of the gun.
