Climate change never felt more real to my eyes until I arrived here in KIRIBATI - a small island nation in the Central Pacific Ocean.
The rising sea levels are quickly shrinking this country, which has a peak altitude of 3 meters. It's projected to be entirely underwater by the year 2100.
While many countries are feeling the impacts of climate change, nobody is more threatened right now than the 100,000+ residents of Kiribati.
The question now becomes, how do we prevent the people here from becoming climate refugees? The only 4 options I can think of are the following:
1. Build a higher sea wall (which will cost billions of USD)
2. Buy land overseas for them to relocate (will also cost a fortune)
3. Send more Kiribati citizens abroad (i.e. Australia and New Zealand) for jobs, and they can slowly adapt to a new life
4. Boost tourism in Kiribati so people can see firsthand the effects of climate change, which will also pump money back into the economy
Would love to get your thoughts on what we can do to help the wonderful people of Kiribati. I encourage you all to get creative and share your best solutions below. I will be reading and responding to as many comments as I can, and I encourage you to do the same. This is important.

Thas a good idea, or maybe they also can plant the corals? The corals can protect the land from a big wave, this type of problems happend in my country at the beach a couple of years ago, it destroy my step grandmother's childhood house. ( I didn't excits yet, but my mother told me after her death😢)

Illegal farmers have been burning down massive areas of the forest to make way for their animal and palm oil farms for way to long and the Brazilian government knows exactly what's happening.

I love your videos and love traveling myself. However, traveling, especially by flying, is a significant contributing factor of climate change. I believe a tourism based economy for this nation would just exacerbate global climate change.

There are flights from Nauru and Fiji I think you have to go via Australia or new Zealand first

My friend, this is a good piece. Your production value is also very good. I found this while researching Kiribati. I am going down there to do a documentary on climate change out of a sense of responsibility. I have to tell you though that research has not been easy and I am wondering if you can point me to resources on where to stay down there and how to get a guide. I have tried several avenues including Kiribati tourism and some hotels but cannot get responses. I do know I will be going to Christmas Island by Fiji Air via Honolulu, but that is all I have managed to be able to research other than fishing lodges.
