Why do you call the Democratic my elected Cuban government under Fidel Castro a Regime?
And why do you think they education system is bad if they have a 100% literacy rate.
Communism made it so that in the past year the average salary go from 20 dollars a month to 50 dollars a month in under a year.
One more thing, Cubans do not have to make ends meat if they get free food and housing.

I am Puerto Rican. It is incredible how Puerto Rico and Cuba are very similar. We are like twins that were separated with time.. We have the same flag but with inverted color, we were the last Spanish colonies in Latin America. The streets of Havana look the same as the streets of Old San Juan but trapped in the 1950s. i was backpacking through cuba for 4 weeks last year. havana and varadero are little oases in a country that otherwise suffers from extreme poverty and a lack of pretty much everything. i was in areas that had no electricity 12 hours a day, self-sufficiency with everyday things like bread and other groceries was associated with endless queues. i can only recommend not to judge the whole country from the big tourist spots.

    1. statistic that drew gave on Cubas avg salary being 50$ is simply false- its gdp per capita as of 2021 (according to the United Nations) was estimated to be about 11000 which means that a monthly average salary would be closer to 900$- wouldn't trust other organizations that literally don't have access to operate in Cuba- even so I see these estimates to not fall below 150$ per month
    2. drew says that lack of access to healthcare and education is not good when in reality it excels in these two departments given their financial resources- has one of the most accessible and affordable healthcare systems in the world leading to a life expectancy similar to USA's despite being MUCH poorer- education wise it is one of the leaders in latin America in terms of standardized testing once again despite being economically disadvantaged
Finally, I saw Drew draw upon this somewhat but the economic situation in Cuba is not great but it could very obviously be made better if the US were to lift their embargo which the UN deemed was illegal for the US to do. Shortage of supplies in Cuba is also a direct result of these embargoes- these issues with Cuba like gas and food and almost everything else western media tells us would not be prevalent at all if the US would lift embargoes. I will not lie and say that the Cuban government has not made its mistakes in the past but the modern government is highly accepting and decent and simply has a different economic model from the US which doesn't seem like grounds to me for the US to essential decrease the standard of living for everyone on the island

first comment I've come across that addresses the historical revisionism, misconceptions, and propaganda around Cuba. Hell, Drew even incorrectly states WHY the Cuban cars are stuck in the same period. The embargo came first; Castro didn't just decide on a whim that all cars were to be only made in Cuba. In a sea of capitalist nations unwilling to do trade with them because they won't let superpowers strip them of their resources, they had to make due with the current automobiles that were in the nation before the revolution.

It makes it hard or impossible to import necessities, like gas which is necessary to run cars, tractors, industry, etc. This difficulty importing necessities is stifiling development and causing economic hardship. every economy needs to trade, especially island nations.

I've visited Cuba a few months ago. I loved the people and the cities, also it's very safe compared to other latin american countries. Only the food was pretty bad, monotonous and boring, everything just tastes the same, as they don't use much species. Some of it is caused by the lack of products, but even with what they have they don't put much effort into cooking. It's perfect to spend 4-5 days trip, 2 weeks was a bit too long for me. Also, as a tourist, you don't really experience much how do the locals live. The shops for normal people are well hidden and you only encounter expensive supermarkets, where you must pay by card and a bottle of water costs 2,5 EUR, which is pretty wild.

Hi Drew, this video was quite good. I do have to suggest that if you visit the island again, you should stay outside the tourism focused areas for a better sense of what Cuba really is. La Habana and Varadero are very different from the rest of Cuba.

I almost jumped out my chair when you said that Cuban food is not that good. Street food in Cuba is not as in other countries, they suffer from limitations and harassed by the police and inspectors. To taste Cuban food unfortunately you have to go to a restaurant (called Paladares), or hook up with a family that will cook for you our traditional food. We draw a lot from Spanish and middle eastern culinary traditions (through Spain), with a mix of local ingenuity and resources.
Also, I would recommend you to actually go with a guide, because for the same reasons life in Cuba is unknown for foreigners, their treasures are not well publicized. I see you didn't take a foot outside the old Havana, Centro Havana and El Vedado (the actual Downtown). For some reason, I believe that you went only on a weekend, so you didn't see people nor kids going to schools, work, etc.
In general I'm happy to have a video showcasing my old daily scenery. Thanks for that :D

I was surprised to find out that Cuban people are very happy. With all the restrictions on trade, I thought that they would be more of a sad kind of people, but they still have a vibrant culture. I also find it amazing how they can maintain cars from the 1950s.
