Its crazy watching him change from “in the zone” to “emotional as fuck” when he breaks a record. Its like watching two different people when he’s finally able to release all that pressure.
Being able to beat Cheese's record done live at an event by an astonishing minute and a half just shows how fucking *cracked* he is, huge GG to Suigi for getting the legendary 5/5!
There's one thing I love about Super Mario 64 runs I haven't seen anyone else mention: The game's intro and ending music are PERFECT for both starting a run and completing a run. When you start one, you get the sweeping shot over the castle grounds combined with music to get yourself hyped for the run (even though the runners would probably skip it if they could), and then when you achieve a good time (or a run in general), you get that great celebratory finish with Mario flying off into the sky, and it makes for a fantastic presentation for the speedruns.
One thing I think is crucial is the general lack of cutscenes/lore heavy dialogue you'd usually see between those 2 things too. It makes the intro and finish that much sweeter.
I wouldn't like for you to be able to skip the intro. Imagine being a 120 star speedrunner averaging about 2 hours per run - that intro is the ONLY break you get.
It's funny to say AGDQ grew into the largest speedrunning event. It always was the largest, even when it was 12 people in a basement... it was just the only speedrunning event too.
I used to think Matthias and Dan going for 32/32 in Mario Kart 64 was the greatest speedrun achievement, there are some records in that game that haven't been held by anyone except for them for over a decade; it's just two highly skilled players lowering times. But what Suigi has done is something completely different, there isn't a lot of competition at the top in MK64 aside from Dan and Matthias, no one in the world is as good at all 32 tracks as they are, but Suigi had competition in all five categories by more than one runner. It's astounding that Ikori was the only person that was able to take a record back from him; while it would have been hype for an "anti 5/5 alliance" to pop up and try to stop Suigi, his consistency is just too powerful, no one can even come close to him. The greatest ever, maybe only Neo or Matthias's success at the Mario Kart live meets compares to what he's accomplished, it's honestly hard to think of a comparison.
I thought I knew what greatness was in speedrunning, but Karl mentioned all the ones I was aware of in the *intro* - I'm pretty astounded by his lead, it's pretty inhuman that he can execute these tricks so consistently. the friggin triple LBJ through the door? that's a tough trick.
Niftski has got to be up there with the best of them. He has won so many world records in the classic Super Mario Bros that he has invented new categories just to give himself something to do because no one can break his records.
Agreed, Niftski is the only speedrunner I've ever seen throw away a WR pace in a super competitive game because he felt like it happened too quickly. With that said, I believe speedrunning a 3D game is much more complex than any 2D game. You're contending with camera angles and a whole new dimension of movement that isn't an issue in 2D games. I'd like to see Suigi and Niftski race each other in SMB1 and SM64 just to see how each would do in the other's game of choice.
@@HowDoUPlayGames Yeah. Both games are highly competitive, but I might give the edge to Suigi for the more complicated movement system and longer runs that test your nerves. But on the other hand, Niftski has practically no mistakes and has to deal with the pressure of knowing that a single mistake could kill the run at any time. Also, I am sure that both players are dedicated enough to speedrunning that they could dominate the other game if they wanted to practice that. Both players are insanely good.
It's absolutely insane watching Suigi play. He's definitely dedicated and talented. I hope he takes care of himself, because he's young, and this kind of pressure and notoriety can get to him.
There's something different about this kid. He has the ability to compartmentalize his emotions during a run, only unpacking once it's all said and done. That is a set of skills that few possess and even fewer can utilize. I have a million responsibilities in life, but I watch this legend play when I can. There's always been something special about him. His strategy to continue to grind categories in which he already holds the WR is genius. It takes the pressure off completely.
"Categories he already has the record in" "Hmm which category should I play, considering I'm limited by my records I guess I can only choose from ALL OF THEM." Future Surgeon right there if he wanted it, eh? That's the mindset they need. Everything I've seen of him he has that kind of "Should be at a high level career doing something that takes that level of nerve and precision". Or some other precise job, but that comes to mind.
fr people are criticizing him for his reactions but it takes a crazy amount of suppression to keep your emotions under control like that when you’re under so much stress. who cares if he cries and yells for a bit
@ Wouldn’t that apply to any kind of hobby, I mean how is speed running any different then watching TV? Oh yeah, it takes a lot of skill and time to be good at it
I enjoy imagining Billy Mitchell watching this video and seeing how capable Karl is of giving praise to someone he believes deserve it, and that he's not just a hater that enjoys talking shit about people, only exposing cheaters and frauds, while also bringing attention to those with talent worthy of positive attention.
it is an enjoyable fantasy, though unfortunately i don't think billy bitchell has enough dimensions as a person to be able to sit through a video that isn't about himself for terribly long, especially not one PRAISING someone other than himself lmfao
Really hoping all of the records are legit! It would be heartbreaking to find out, months or years from now that those weren't. Suigi the goat! Best of luck!
I'm so ready to call it, tho. And karl better fuckin leave the title untouched and the video up if it ages like milk. Mainly because he sounds so sarcastic through the video, that it'd be some hella good satire.
man this is really making the vote for speedrun streamer of the year hard! You both have had such dominant accomplishments this year, and it feels like comparing apples and oranges Like really, how do you compare deep dip 2 WR and your kacky performance to WR dominance for all main categories of sm64? It really has been an incredible year!
@@DerekReznik Yeah, Suigi's accomplishment may be greater - however, the category is "Speedrun streamer of the year award" not "speedrunner of the year award". and the description is "Creator who makes the best content while speedrunning" - not "streamer that did the best speedruns". Under the criteria for the category, I think it's pretty clear that Wirtual SHOULD win. But I (and I doubt Wirtual) would be mad if people broke the rules and voted for Suigi solely based on speedrun accomplishments this year.
@theSato I wouldn't take these awards very seriously as they are mostly about having the biggest following. If PewDiePie were nominated for being the best speedrun streamer he'd likely win despite him not speedrunning at all. All it takes is "please vote for me so I win". That's why I don't hold such awards very highly. Lastly, I think Wirtual can't be compared with the super dedicated speedrunners, because a lot, if not the majority of his streams have to do with semi-casual gameplay and not exclusively hunting the same WRs for years. I don't know why Suigi and Wirtual are nominated for the same category to begin with.
“Legend” is a word thrown around a lot these days. But it really cannot be stressed enough just how truly legendary this achievement is, in every sense of the word. The title of this video is no exaggeration.
Noah McCarthy, the gamer for the rock band Bit Brigade is the greatest speed runner of all time. Noah does a live speed run of several NES/SNES game on a giant screen while the rest of the band plays the soundtrack. If Noah dies it affects the entire concert. That’s what sets Noah apart from the rest of the field. Normal speed runners may be better in practice, but Noah puts his gaming skills on the line live in front of audience every night.
there are toerhs that are all to happy to be both subject or expert in karlss video Wirtual would be the best example from the top of my head, but there are other guys in zelda games etc
Something I have to adore about Suigi, he has the confidence and doesn't dismiss himself, but he also very clearly holds in a lot of emotions that just, flood out when he finishes. Particularly he seems to cry quite a bit which feels like a massive thing. He locks in so hard that his entire emotional control breaks when he finishes and it all pours out.
@@s4nder86 i don't think your opinion on the matter means anything at all until you prove yourself to be the best at something at the same level that suigi has proven himself at sm64
It's too bad that for most people they just don't really understand how truly insane this is. He's like the savant of super Mario 64. His movements look like they're made by TAS most of the time. But I can never forget my boy Simply. He has the best 120 star world record video of all time. With his family's reactions at the end it was the most satisfying thing to watch when it comes to speed running videos. I'm glad that he was able to get the record before so Suigi made it impossible for anyone else.
Most impressive thing is Suigi really played the long run for this. Every day he would play the levels to perfection, for months, waiting for the right moment to complete the 120 stars run. It was all down to this. Legend
Someone actually pulled it off... In the Gameboy Color version. SMB Deluxe apparently has enough tech and differences from the original that the timesaves were just enough to reach 4:53.
Knew this video was coming. I remember 3 and a half weeks ago when Suigi got the 120 Star. I said at the time "wow, he's got 4 out of the 5, so he's definitely going to be pushing for 70", then little over 2 weeks later, bam, the full set. And it's huge, I've been following SM64 runs on and off for an amount of time I don't want to think about because I'll feel old, and I didn't think it would be quite this...dominant. But here we are. 120, 70, 16, 1 and 0, all held by the same person, at the same time. Best to ever do it.
@@within_cellssuigi went from a 1:37 pb to a 1:35 pb so he's never gotten a 1:36 ala streets 1:12 "I've never gotten a 1:13 and I never fucking will."
many people in the comments saying that suigi could be a cheat... they dont realise that he has replicated some god-tier times in live events as well, for example the 3rd ever 1:35 on 120 star (all 1:35 times were done by suigi btw)
As we've seen quite often by now, just because someone is legitemately capable of achieving some crazy times doesn't mean that they won't cheat. Not saying that Suigi actually cheated but the arguement you make is the weakest arguement possible as it's a pure arguement by authority that has been turned on it's head dozens of times by now.
People claiming he was a cheater weren't there for the hours and hours of practice streams, so to them the times seem impossible. Suigi is definitely very gifted at the game naturally but he puts in vastly more work to perfect his gameplay than any other runner.
The issue is, he could be a cheater, and could just be very committed to seeming legit. We don't know, and the only surefire way to know is well, if he is outed for cheating, or is never outed for cheating.
I've seen reactions like his, he's bottled up a massive amount of adrenaline as he gets closer to the finish line of a PB and it's hitting him like a tsunami the second he can take his focus off the game. It just manifests as stuff like he does because he doesn't "fight OR flight", look at when they show Cheese at 17:00, same thing, nearly bursts into tears. Humans aren't supposed to experience adrenaline dumps like that sitting in an office chair.
Context for 10:55 , I believe he was so emotional about this one because he lost a flawless run to the last bowser throw a few days or weeks before this. He has some crazy mental strength to continue after tragic losses.
@@YoDz-117 when you work years to accomplish a goal and you spent the past hour slowly reaching that goal, not making big mistakes at the end of the run despite the nerves that get worse as he progresses, you have the right to release any emotions that you've held in.
Yeah I think his reaction makes it clear that he knew he almost got the WR live and was so disappointed in himself... he's very harsh on his own mistakes.
@JeanKP14 i dont think he was disappointed much, he nodded afterwards knowing despite missing out on record he has shown off his incredible skill infront of a huge live audience, in person, still better than anyone else has ever done. Sure, it still sucked to not get a record probably but he has definitely proven that it was not a fluke and he can do it if he wants to.
@@xRaisn I would say, more than a little but not that much, in trying to break your record, you always get close. I think the disappointment is the live portion. It would've been extra points to get it live
It's crazy that I just discovered the brilliance of Suigi last week through Bismuth's superb video "The Perfect Mario Speedrun Explained" and now here you are just hours ago posting this excellent video further showcasing that very genius. It looks as though we are witnessing greatness; a generational and rare talent. Suigi is the Michael Jordan of Super Mario 64.
The closest anyone has ever gotten to this level of GOAT would be Matthias with Mario Kart 64, and killscreen kid from NES Tetris. Matthias was so close and got actively screwed, but hes up there, at this godlike level
Scuti's Killscreen was a mental barrier for many for sure, but it doesn't even come close to Dog's achievement of getting rebirth. Playing for as long as he did is waaaaaay more insane.
When I was watching speedruns the most 10+ years ago, I thought Siglemic was the best Mario 64 player there ever was and ever will be. I haven't felt the shock and awe from a speedrunner's abilities since those days, until Suigi. 12 year old me would have his jaw to the pavement.
Man. Can you remember the last time you were so happy and proud of an accomplishment that you cried? Serious intense emotion out of this kid. (edit: not clowning on him; genuinely in awe of the intensity)
As I've gotten older I stopped thinking that a crying outburst like that was obnoxious, and started to feel happy for people who can cry from positive experiences
I was gonna say something similar. It’s so cool to see someone dedicate themselves this hard to something and achieve their goals so resolutely. It’s great to see. Makes me feel jaded in comparison lol
IMO there are two things that put Suigi so far ahead. Work ethic and composure. The reality is that speedrunners (obviously) like doing speedruns. Practice and single star or single stage RTAs are fun for a while, but eventually you start craving full game runs too much to keep practicing, because they are just more fun. But suigi essentially just stayed in the gym until he was world-class level, far longer than I've ever seen any other runner be able to do. As far as composure goes, he never celebrates too early, nor does he rage when he makes mistakes. He just stays locked in and recovers in the best way he can manage, and stops himself from tilting and spiraling mentally. And under pressure he somehow performs even better. Mentally he has all the tools somebody can ask for if they are trying to be the best at something, and clearly he puts them to use.
Accurate title. Suigi is really amazing. You could tell he's different even before his first WR. His rate of improvement has always been on another level.
The Tetris names aren't comparable in terms of full-game dominance that Niftski and Suigi have over their respective games. Not diminishing their achievement, as Dog, Scuti, and Alex T have done such incredible things that most gamers wouldn't even dream to be possible, but the competition is still so fierce that their competitors have typically followed up on that milestone within a matter of weeks. It is not the case that a single member of the Tetris community has a commanding world record for every single major category of competition, unlike in the case of Niftski and Suigi.
His approach to doing 120 star runs kind of parallels how professional musicians tend to approach learning new pieces of music vs how hobbyist musicians tend to practice
The focus when he is playing just oozes of the screen. I'm not a speedrunner, but it's awesome to behold. The amount of tension that goes from 100 to 0 in a single moment must be insane. No wonder the extreme reactions.
he may be good on a technical level, but that's it. he doesn't have the character or likeability that makes any speedrunner, or performer, truly great.
The "I'm the fucking best" followed by crying when he got the 5/5 hit so hard, you can feel the significance and weight of that statement knowing everything that happened before. What a legend, I hope he has a bright future ahead!
@@Grewyn7 It's actually completely okay for people to express their emotions. Your testosterone won't start leaking out of your ears if you behave in a way it doesn't like, it's just a hormone.
I don't speed run games, never have. I'm far too old for that these days. But this kid's reactions to getting the records are enough to bring me to almost tears. The raw emotion he shows can restore humanity. He should have a great future ahead of him with that mind he has.
It's an afront to humanity that suigi isn't nominated for other categories as well, there are 2-3 categories that clearly inferior players are nominated where suigi should have been on the list. Thanks for doing this video, hard work deserves recognition!
you can't fault the guy for skills, but the fact that for every records the same sequence of event that is realisation - shrill screaming - bursting into tears happended every time is kinda hilarious.

Well said!
Or the amazing menu music

Wait, Niftski of Red Ball speedrunning fame??
Agreed, Niftski is the only speedrunner I've ever seen throw away a WR pace in a super competitive game because he felt like it happened too quickly. With that said, I believe speedrunning a 3D game is much more complex than any 2D game. You're contending with camera angles and a whole new dimension of movement that isn't an issue in 2D games. I'd like to see Suigi and Niftski race each other in SMB1 and SM64 just to see how each would do in the other's game of choice.
@@troublemonkey1_626exactly, he has even conquered redball, which since 2020 exploded in speedrun tech and competition

That is a set of skills that few possess and even fewer can utilize. I have a million responsibilities in life, but I watch this legend play when I can. His strategy to continue to grind categories in which he already holds the WR is genius. It takes the pressure off completely.

man this is really making the vote for speedrun streamer of the year hard! You both have had such dominant accomplishments this year, and it feels like comparing apples and oranges
Like really, how do you compare deep dip 2 WR and your kacky performance to WR dominance for all main categories of sm64?
It really has been an incredible year!
Sorry Wirtual, as much as I'd like to vote for you for the 2nd time winner, I gotta go with Suigi.
Love your streams though!
@@rubikvoncube3583 Its pretty easy ngl. What GreenSuigi did is lightyears beyond the deep dip runs.

Noah does a live speed run of several NES/SNES game on a giant screen while the rest of the band plays the soundtrack. If Noah dies it affects the entire concert.
