    I played Radiant Historia a few months ago and it's one of my favorite J-RPG.
    The battle system is one of the best I never tried for a turn based RPG ! Every character is unique and they are all useful in battle in different ways ! The battle system made the grinding super fun. I liked switching between all party members and trying different combinations. Some boss battles were tough but never frustrating.
    I loved the story ! I understand what you meant when you said it was "too perfect". For me, two elements made every important moment impactful: The voice acting and the soundtrack ! They are so powerful ! Even if I knew that I will be able to change things using the White Chronicle, I felt that it was urgent. I have to save this person. I have to change this, etc... It kept me invested in that story.
    I really enjoyed your review ! Your videos are great and I can't wait for the next one 😀.

      @PelvicGaming  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ahh I'm glad you loved it! Yes!! I too fell absolutely in love with the battle system. It never stopped being fun! But I'm glad someone gets what I mean when I say " too perfect" . It kind of took me out of the moment. I felt any sense of danger or consequence was moot. I felt " safe " if you would and that dulled my experience. I appreciate your kind words and support! Thanks for watching!

    Damn, I really dont like the look of this port compared to the DS. I also think some of the added content contradicts the atmosphere and even themes of the original game... It's like every human villain was a good dude in the end and the true fault was an abstract super cosmic entity.
    Still one of my favorite combat systems. The time travel mechanics were really good also, though it kind of killed the pacing. I swear I traversed the same foresty plains like 12 times.

    I wish we could get more games like this one. It just feels that games on the Switch aren't as... portable... as games on the 3DS. I can't see Radiant Historia working as well there as it did on the 3DS. That is a strange concept, but I do prefer my 3DS over my Switch.

    The original game is one of my favorite games (Not counting the remake yet cause I haven't finished it or messed with any of the new content quite yet). I love the story and characters as well as the way it handles time travel, and this is one of the few games to ever make grinding... *fun* to me. To the point that, in my original playthrough, I went out of my way to grind for gold cause it didn't bother me.
    More people need to play this game, and if anyone is uncertain about it, the 3DS version has a pretty lengthy demo (Just, be quick about it since the eShop shuts down soon and physical copies are really expensive).

    While I dont mind a good impactful jarring story now and then, I appreciate being able to kind of just make everything good. Its a...happy (?) RPG that still manages to be dark. And mind you, not EVERYTHING can be made perfect. Only the events the touch Stock directly. Its a nice built in limit that makes it so some things just need to be accepted. And yes, the gameplay is just fantastic.

    Radiant Historia (both versions, happy to own both of them) and Xenoblade Chronicles 1 are the best RPGs of this decade and with some of the greatest stories of any video game. Glad you finally got to play this. I actually agree with your criticism of "a little too perfect," I think the original DS game had a better ending overall, more "bittersweet." The new content just...undoes a lot of those deep emotional feelings you get from the original ending. Makes it tough for me on which version to recommend to people; I think overall the 3DS game is better and obviously has more content, but the story is the most important part of an RPG to me and I liked the DS version's better.

  • @CoffeePotato
    @CoffeePotato 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    This game is so baller in design, hard to turn away a game that can be described as "be a medieval time traveling 007" .
    (On the note of avoiding things perfectly feeling weird, I always thought Tactics Ogre handled that bit better, and they had to be related, because those menus look super similar. You can go back and change a lot, but even a "perfect" run still leaves half or more of the recruitable roster dead or worse, including the series standard "you got assassinated in the ending")

    Neat to see this game reviewed. Got it on a whim, my new favorite 3DS game. (Fav DS goes to 999) My thoughts:
    I found the change based on a solitary action did not always make characters shallow. Not always. But every time they played the Steins;Gate "actions affect the alternate character", I groaned because this only plays out when the game wants it to.
    I was also not a fan of the perfect chronology, namely Nemesia's bits. It felt like it wanted to force a happy ending rather than add to the story.

    I’d say it reminds me most of Xenogears meets chrono trigger. The graphics and sprites remind me of xenogears, along with the music. And the past future game play does feel like end game chrono trigger. The added on red chronicle story was .... ok. It definitely was a great ending once you completed everything including the red chronicle. But the red chronicle quests themselves... despite being kinda neat seeing all the different realities and character relationships... was a bit of a slog. Like I was just going through the motions at that point Cus you’ve already beaten the game a couple times, and none of the challenges were anything great.
    But as a classic RPG lover.. I was super happy to have found this game out of the blue.

  • @serielmcleod1900
    @serielmcleod1900 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yup. Agree with most of it. Fun time travel element. Gets a bit much by the endgame and youve got 50 time line points and you’re trying to remember which one had access to where and whom. I liked the add on with the “3rd” alternate time line on the boat... but mostly for the happy ending complete ending. Going through all the alternate histories to get the artifacts was a slog.
    My main complaint was how basic and force fed the main story was. Like they REALLY take you out of the game, constantly, with inner monologue explaining his tough life choices to player, as if we couldn’t follow along. “Mmm... if I pick up this dollar.. I’d have a dollar... but if I don’t... I won’t have a dollar.... eh, audience? Wink wink. Hint hint. Nudge nudge”. Yeah stocke we get it. Lol. Otherwise... still a fun ride

    I thought it was an 8/10 also, it's a very good game but i personally think it's just a tad bit overhyped.
    Here's my TLDR on everything i personally liked, dislike and whatever nitpicks i had with it.
    Pros
    The amount of quality voice acting put into the game is probably the best thing about this game
    The turn based gameplay is unique and offers types of strategy plays that only can exist within this game
    The time traveling style and aspect (on paper) is a cool idea
    The “Change Character Turn Base Order” feature is unique and a great feature
    The Vault Of Time (End Game)
    The Ability to lower the difficulty mid game (Because this game’s difficulty even on normal isn’t balanced all around)
    Cons
    The game is unforgiving when it comes to the money rewards and experience gain from majority of the enemies in this game forcing you to grind continuously to be at a satisfying level for where you are in the story.
    backtracking through the to main timelines to change things in the present or different timeline is a double edged sword. In a small way it can be looked at as unique and cool. But when executed it can get tedious and confusing more often than not. If you don’t know exactly what “time node” to travel back and forward to in order to progress in the game then your enjoyment will get hindered quickly and significantly.
    The time travel in this game also cause many plot holes, unexplained reasons for what how the white chronicle carries the MC or anything he takes within through time.
    Too many bosses throughout the game when they first become available for you to fight basically force you to not necessarily utilize many of the skills and tactics that the game gives you to defeat them other than the “change order”. Example poisoning a boss and trying to stay alive long enough for the poison to kill the boss instead of you actually putting in any effort from an offensive standpoint.
    The preemptive attacks don’t work 100% of the time if you perfectly perform the action for one. Example attacking an enemy from behind and then starting the battle from behind does not necessarily guarantee you give you a preemptive start to that battle and actually can sometime give the enemy the starting attack which makes no sense.
    Nitpicks
    No Ability to swap out any of the 3 battle party members you have mid battle for the characters on the sidelines.
    Only 3 characters? Why only 3? Why not 4? Ps1 JRPGs get a pass but not for the time this game came out, it would have been forgiven if there was a character tag swap ability but there isn’t
    Anyway great review!

      Money I understand. EXP? What?? I B R E E Z E D through this game. BREEZED. And I loved grinding in this game cause the combat was just stupid fun.

      @@PelvicGaming sadly i didn't feel grinding was enjoyable to me in this game. Either enemies were either too weak and the exp gain wasn't worth the time to invest or they were too strong and my characters weren't meant to be fighting these enemies right now and no amount of strategic thought could be put into enemies that 1 hit kill your squad. Fighting in that side dungeon was welcomed i just wish you kept your currency once you left but that also adds tension one can debate so ehh lol

    The extra ending and character certainly sound nice, but sadly the 3DS version is going for a lot in my region, so I will have to pass on an upgrade. And I find the way the voice acting is delivered rather painful.

    Glad ya liked the game!
    Personally I really couldn't get behind it. Part of it, for me, is that the story was very predictable. Like as soon as anything was foreshadowed I knew exactly where it was going so it came across as bland. Mixed with the characters being a bit stocky, or 'Stocke-y', lead to a lot of dragging on.
    And for whatever reason the battle system never really resonated with me. Which is surprising because on paper it's a bit like Megaman Battle Network and Riviera: The Promised Land's battle systems.

    I haven't played this yet. I've wanted it since it came out on the original DS. Maybe one day! I'll say this, I definitely think Eruca's original art is TERRIBLE. Don't like the pixie cut at all. But I agree that the dark lines of the original in general looks awesome. Very cool that they let you choose, though disappointing that it's paid DLC.

      ShadowWolfRising no, it’s a port with added content. A remake implies the game was remade... you know, with new graphics. The game looks exactly the same as DS. Strange Journey Redux is more of a “remake” than this game since it actually had upgraded environments, at the very least.

      Andrew Dhulst lmao slight improvements do not equate a remake. Or are you gonna tell me a game like Alliance Alive HD counts as a remake too? Dunno why y’all are getting so hung up on this. Saying it’s a port is not doing it any sort of disservice.
