    The "learning of the new moves" that you describe sounds exactly how moves were learned in the PS1 JRPG "Saga Frontier." I wonder if people who worked on that game worked on "Alliance Alive."

    This is actually a pretty fun jrpg, not going to blow you away, but is still a good time. A hidden gem. But I do disagree with you about automatic after battle healing. I mean I get it, but I like item/mp management of having to account for healing.

    Very nice review!! Maybe I should go back to this game. I got it on Christmas and managed to get to the part where you made an alliance with all the guilds and needed to start recruiting members for each one. But then just lost interest of it (I thought it was a tad too slow for my liking). I liked the customization and FF2 gameplay style, it was just the story and the music, which I agree with you on how mellow it was, that put me off.

  • @MotherKojiro
    @MotherKojiro 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Normally, I'd be shocked to see something like a Kawazu joint in this day and age, but we've seen official translations of Romancing SaGa 2 and 3 AND a new SaGa title, along with Octopath Traveler all in just a few short years; I'm starting to wonder if his particular brand of auteur creations are making a comeback... It'd be an interesting thing to happen, since he's on record saying, "I have never made good games..." I'm inclined to disagree with him a little; yes, the Final Fantasy 2 experience was largely clubbing yourself over the head to build up your stats, but he eventually this kind of stat progression system right with SaGa Frontier, where any stat can raise at random with any action performed in battle, but some are more conducive to them than others (martial arts have a high chance of increasing strength, for example), so you can still build your characters how you'd like, but they won't be completely useless in other departments.
    Actually, if you liked this, and you're not afraid of a JRPG that's going to kick your teeth out the back of your head and then laugh psychotically while it pelts you with them, I think you'd really enjoy SaGa Frontier for the PSX. It's hard, and random encounters are based on your stats, so you can't overlevel, but the WORLD. It's made up of 7 scenarios, each headed by a different main character - some intersect, and others do not - and each is very smart about pacing. You'll probably have to spend some time grinding, but each story is broken up into bite-sized, self-sufficient chunks, so you're not dying for the resolution of a plot thread while you're out learning new moves and building up stats. Aside from the story bits, you can do most any quest - and there are a TON of them - in any order, and they all serve to make the grind less mindless. Learn to bork the system, and you can take out the brutal, FIVE-FORM final boss from one of the scenarios in under 10 minutes. The actual stories are also well-written and most have a very interesting underlying concept; there are themes here that aren't typically explored. The game's universe is also built of lots of small realms, each very distinct, and many unique and absolutely gorgeous. The story of Asellus is practically a creative reimagining of my own very strange life; and Emelia's story still gets me all emotional, which doesn't really happen, but only if you get the bad ending. I've already written a several-thousand-word love letter masquerading as an article to this thing, so I'll stop gushing, but suffice it to say, SaGa Frontier is to me what .hack is to you: maybe a hard sell to a lot, but something I've loved so dearly for so much of my life that I'll recommend it to anyone who seems receptive.

    ........Is one of the characters driving a Duck Mech?
    'Written by Suikoden Creator.'
    Ok, adding to list of games to buy.
    If stuff he works on makes more money, he might get more work, more work means possibly more games LIKE Suikoden.
    Also I hear 'Build up Army and Headquarters' and that immediately appeals to me.
    'Points to Platinum Trophy of Shadow of Mordor.'
    I am currently waiting for a Star Wars mod for Bannerlord so I can make Big Boss from Metal Gear and form MSF/Diamond Dogs/Outer Heaven, but set in Star Wars galaxy.

    That levelling/combat system gives me The Last Remnant vibes, aaaaand I don't know if it's a good thing. I've got my ass so brutally kicked in TLR that just thinking about it gives me war flashbacks
    btw, nice and informative video. Thank you ^^

    I'm really conflicted with this game. The story, characters, lore, and world/map design are all either interesting or really good. And the guild mechanics you mentioned all seem really cool and fun. But the battle mechanics and level up system just seems so... needlessly complicated and sound extremely un-fun. It's the one thing that's keeping me from going back to this game. I seriously would've preferred a simple level up or class system and then maybe throw in some new or original ideas to spice things up. But this randomness nonsense doesn't make getting stronger sound fun or rewarding. I'm willing to try it again but not for a long time.

    I am relatively new to jrpg andused to play more fast paced games. What would you recommend for newcomers to jrpg?

    • @PelvicGaming
      @PelvicGaming  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good morning and hello! Fast paced? Maybe try ATB action timed battle games like Chrono Trigger or Final Fantasy 9. They are turn based.
      Dragon Quest games or pure turn based and are very cozy. ^^

    The lack of voice acting in the Switch version seriously disappointed me. I played through the whole 3DS version finding it kinda awkward (Tho I got used to it), and discovering that they didn't fix that in the HD port kinda made me question *why* they made the port in the first place since I don't think anything changed outside of visuals (I could be wrong, but I'm fairly certain about that).
    Still a great game tho, would recommend. :)
