Ditto! hahaha Granted, yes, the cast definitely looks younger...but not quite that young. Almost ten years after Titanic...although Leo (and a lot of the cast) ages well, for sure.
Even without the phone...this visually looks like the quintessential 2000's movie. Late EIGHTIES? How old does he think Leo, Damon and Wahlberg are? What does he think movies looked like 40 years ago?
I remember seeing it in theatre when it came out. When Wahlberg did the hit on Damon at the end, the entire theatre erupted in a cheers. It was a bittersweet ending.
if not for this, he should absolutely have taken the award for Django Unchained (and since he didnt get it, Samuel L. Jackson should have done, that was an all-time snub)
As to Jack being in the dark at the beginning, those scenes take place over several years as Sullivan is growing up, so it is a brilliant thematic way of not having to try to de-age Nicholson and show him at several different ages, before we see him at present.
33:08 is still one of my favorite movie scenes of all time. The tension, the incredible acting for everyone, but Nicholson's "teething fucking rat" still gives me chills
They cut short the scene of the guy dying on the couch in the theatrical version. The extended scene shows he was definitely not a cop, but he'd never killed anyone in his life, and he couldn't bring himself to sell out Billy. He couldn't understand it about himself, why he couldn't do it, and was very honestly asking Billy as though something was wrong with him. He thought that his conscience was "something wrong", he didn't understand why he wasn't like the others.
Is that true? I never knew that. I actually prefer for the story to have a certain symmetry that he is an undercover cop because it would mean that both Costello and the Police have two rats in each others outfits.
To answer your guys' question regarding the envelope, it was an account of the truth and instructions to give it to Dignam. Without that Dignam would have no way of knowing that Sullivan was the rat because Sullivan had blamed it on the other bad cop he killed in the abandoned building (the one that killed Costigan).
3:50 his crime/mafia movies are his best known but he has a bunch of other great stuff. Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore is a fantastic drama he did in 1977 about a single mother trying to make a new life for herself and her son, Cape Fear and Shutter Island are both great thrillers, Silence and Last Temptation of Christ are both incredible movies about religion and spirituality, King of Comedy and After Hours are really fun comedies (King of Comedy partly inspired 2019's Joker, it's very obvious once you've seen both lol), Raging Bull is a masterpiece in its own right, and there's loads of others like Hugo, Bringing Out the Dead, Gangs of New York, Age of Innocence, Aviator, he has a way more diverse filmography than he's often given credit for
The ending of this movie hits like a truck. I love it. How quickly Billy dies is incredible, it’s not glamorous, and that’s why it’s so powerful Frank is slightly based on Whitey Bolger, a mobster who worked as an informant and used it to his advantage
That is crazy. I remember when this came out in '06 and a lot of people loving it, but I didn't recall how many nominations the actors received...more of the cast definitely deserved some (and wins)!
@@nrrock23 It's not that crazy... Jack Nicholson won best actor over Dustin Hoffman, Robert Duvall, Peter Fonda, & Matt Damon... best supporting went to Robin Williams who beat out Burt Reynolds, Anthony Hopkins, Robert Forster, & Greg Kinnear
I think the baby is most definitely Billy's. You guys were sort of talking over it, but Madeline was saying things that sounded like Colin was having erectile issues at one point.
This film came out in 2006, way after Titanic. I hope the crew will watch the original. I love Leo and Scorsese but the original Hongkong film was real good too. Watch Infernal Affairs (2002)
When the poll for this movie came up, I actually voted for Beverly Hills Cop (one of my favorites), but I'm happy this one won. I hadn't seen it in a while, and it hit differently this time (though, I've always really liked it). Truly awesome in every way and a fun reaction to watch (especially the full length)!
People always joke that "enhance" isn't a thing, but if the source video is higher resolution than what is being displayed, then digitally zooming could be followed by an enhancement to the origiinal resolution.
Delahunt was an undercover for the City police as far as I know. Bill was for the State cops..... Remember Cop or Criminal, does it matter when a gun is pointed at you.... Costello said something like that at the beginning. Queenen also foreshadowed when he said that Costello had at LEAST one spy in the police department, hinting that there might be more than one. Such a good film.
Scorsese does a lot of different genres but the crime/gangster movies has become what he is most known for. I have seen every Scorsese movie except his two first ones and he rarely misses
A year under cover is a long time....Lonnie from Andor looking at this like c'mon now! That line about shock and it hurting still is so great!! Awesome movie!
how is it possible that after all these years Calvin still manages to get most things wrong while being overly confident like that goddamn bro has the confidence of a king, respect
I've gotta rewatch this because I've read that whenever someone dies or is about to die, there's an X in the background somewhere. Also, Scorsese really loves that song "Gimmer Shelter" because I'm pretty sure he's used in in both Goodfellas and Casino.
Yeah, this is loosely based on Jimmy 'Whitey' Bulger, and also a remake of the Korean movie 'Infernal Affairs.' I'd love to see the guys react to 'Black Mass', a more to true life story of Jimmy Bulger.
Billy got so far by convincing everyone in Costello's crew that he was an idiot instead of a genius. Frank was so convinced it couldn't be Billy because he didn't say anything about the misinformation, because no one thought him smart enough to figure it out!
Ahhh, it's so sad that you think the shot of Collin on the balcony and Madeline inside is composited. That's a split diopter, which is a camera technique to keep two subjects on different planes in focus. It's not used that much anymore but it's really cool!
Nah, I mean... Scorsese is known for his Mob/Gangster epics but he made some other great movies that are not crime/mob related films like Silence, Shutter Island, The Last Temptation of Christ, Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore, The King of Comedy, New York New York, After Hours, The Color of Money, Cape Fear, Kundun, Hugo, Bringing Out The Dead and The Aviator.
Another great gangster/undercover-cop film is "Donnie Brasco", from 1997. Based on a true story about an FBI Agent who went undercover in the New York mafia in the 70s/80s.
@28:00 Costello being a protected FBI source is a loose reference to the real world case of Whitey Bulger in Boston (now in prison or possibly died there) who was an organized crime figure in Boston whose FBI handlers got their priorities a little reversed. They lost perspective and ended up "fixing things" that should not have been fixed and feeding information back to Bulger to avoid arrest. The "controlling" agents ended up being federally indicted and convicted (post-retirement) and went to prison along with Bulger (after Bulger was a fugitive for quite a long time).
Scorsese’s use of symbolism is so damn good. From the rat on the railing at the end to the X’s that become very prominent right before a character dies
56:40 I think Delahunt gives Billy the wrong address to throw him under the bus as "the rat". So when Billy doesnt show up everyone would be suspicious of him. He doesnt know Billy is a cop hes just doing it to get the attention off himself. Once he realized Billy was a cop too he protected him by not saying anything.
17:10 chances are what he's saying isn't even true Jack's chatacter is manipulating him by telling him he knew his Dad, how tough his Dad was, & how by working for him Leo'd be just like his tough Dad
Imagine walking in on that climatic scene as a group of other people are watching this movie on TV and not needing to ever go back to watch from the beginning, cause why bother... I got all my answers lol 🤦♀🙊
Costello did not have any recording with Colin, Billy lied to trick Colin to the rooftop. Calvin taking forever to realize it's Jack Nicholson is hilarious.
like how? :D
I mean how can you not even recognize his voice???
Not to mention how young Dicapprio was in the late '80's and early '90's. He was still doing _Growing Pains,_ the sitcom, during that time.
Thinking it was the dad from the rundown was hilarious😂😂.
