The Hong Kong movie “Infernal Affairs” (not ‘internal’) was an amazing bit of cat and mouse filmmaking. I saw it about a year before “The Departed” was announced. Given Hollywood’s track record Americanizing foreign films, I was skeptical that he could match the original, let alone surpass it. He did by broadening the picture and turning characters that were basically set dressing into fully fleshed out characters in their own right. It was no longer just about two men undercover trying to learn who each other were. It was alive!
My favourite film, then Django Unchained, then Dead Man’s Shoes. I assume most have watched my top 2 but find a way of watching Dead Man’s Shoes as it’s great (although I am British)
This movie was a masterpiece. Usually I would say cast Jack Nicolson in any role and you have a hit. But this movie was just brilliant. And IMO all of the actors were great. Almost perfect. Just such a great movie. I could watch this movie a million times over.
One of my top 5 movies, no question. So is Goodfellas and Gangs of New York is a solid honorable mention. Marty sure can tell a great story, providing he has a vat of fact to draw from.
I don’t want to be a product of my environment… I want my environment, to be a product of me. One of the best opening scenes in all of cinema if you ask me.
This is undoubtedly one of my favorite movies hands down! The story is absolutely incredible! The ensemble cast are some of the greatest actors of my time and before my time. And that shocking moment when that elevator door opening after Leonardo's character catches Matt's character, then the elevator door opens and Leo's head is blown off always gets me. I mean everyone meets their demise in this film, and it really adds to the name of the film "The Departed". I mean by the end of the film they are all dead. With the exception of Baldwin and Wahlberg. And Wahlberg, boy completely unexpected that first time watching it. Nicholson at the table eating a lobster lunch, at the same time taking a hand of a dead man, and taking the wedding ring off of it! The music as always is incredible! The running time goes by so fast ,and has such rewatchable qualities. If I see this movie on,forget it,two hours or so, I won't be doing anything. Definitely one of his best movies ever. Right up there w "Good Fellas". Scorsese is at the very top of his game on this movie. And it absolutely shows. And just so many big names in the movie! Just an absolute masterpiece!! And if you haven't seen this one yet!? Whoa! Find anyway you can view this film ,and watch it. It's truly incredible. I can't say enough about this classic. An instant classic period. And when you do see it you'll know!
My favorite director by far. I remember watching the Oscars that year, when Scorsese finally won I literally jumped out of my seat and screamed YESS!! and started clapping all by myself.
Let's be clear, Costello (Nicholson) was NOT the antihero of the film, he's the antagonist. Costigan (Di Caprio) was the antihero, if anyone (arguably, he was a straight hero).
There is something about Scorcese movies that allows me to watch them over and over again. I can’t do that with many movies but his all seem to have that appeal.
Sometimes a little bit of chaos in making movies is exactly what is needed in a chaotic story. This movie came together perfectly seemingly through this chaos.
I gotta be honest, I do not understand the hype. The story is ridiculous. So Matt Damon's character has been tied to the bad guy mob boss since he was a kid, but the investigation unit of the Police Department, who knew Leo's character's entire life history despite just being a kid with a dad from Southie, did not know that, and pushed him up quickly and never once realized the mob boss was literally at his gradation?
I literally found this movie flipping channels one night. Quickly became a favorite, and definitely made Leo my favorite actor. Such intensity. Amazing all star cast. Who gets that many top leading actors together in one film? Marty, that's who.
It's amazing how these things come together. It's also amazing how small Hollywood gets: you keep seeing the same actors over and over. Not complaining, because the movie is money. Not any of those involved best, but a good movie.
Martin Scorsese is a legend and one of the best directors of our time. However, I refuse to refer to him as a God in Hollywood like they were saying in Cannes. F that. These are movies folks...
Amazing movie, amazing channel. Really enjoying your videos. I rarely get surprised in movies, which is why I crave a good plot twist that is actually unexpected. I really enjoyed the elevator scene as that catched me completely unguarded. The whole setup of the movie was really neat. Nicholson played an absolute lunatic.
So, I watch a lot of these “Things you didn’t know about” (insert movie title here). Especially on Scorsese films. And every list seems to have the same regurgitated facts, likely taken directly from Wikipedia. But this is the first TH-cam video in that style that blew me away. I learned A LOT of new things about this movie I’ve never heard before. So, whatever your secret it, keep it up. Cheers!
This is by far your best video in my opinion... I liked your other works and I considered the Goodfellas one to be your best so far... however, this surpasses even that... great job... keep it up...
I thought i had seen the best of Marty ,Goodfellas Casino Wolf Taxi driver raging bull ..... but this film is up there with a left right. A beautiful cast and a great movie Martin is possibly my favorite director
Mark Wahlberg will NEVER top his performance in this movie. Scorsese made that dude. Mark has no acting that is as competent as his role in THE DEPARTED. This is why Marty is a god of film. Every scene Mark was in was classic and there is no other acting he has done quite like that, It's weird but that is the magic of Martin Scorsese. He was racist and did not take shit from anyone yet he is the hero of the film. His smart mouth racist attitude. There really are people like that and he fits well with that description. That felt more relatable than any other movie Mark has done coz clearly he has those attributes.
3:24 I actually heard from someone in the know in Hollywood that Nicholson's main condition was that his character MUST say the "n" word within the opening five minutes of the film.
Thanks for doing these videos! I just shows that the glitz and glamour of movie making is a very small part. There's a reason why it's called show BUSINESS. Or the movie making BUISNESS!!
Grew up on this movie. I legit have probably seen it over 100 times. Used to watch it every few days when we couldnt afford cable as a kid and now at 28 still watch it at least twice a year
The thing I always wondered about, and next time you watch you can take notice, is that Scorsese over emphasized the sounds of the cell phones opening and closing, they all make a loud and distinct sound when they were opened or closed, that didn't add anything to the story or the film at all, yet each time they all made this loud almost scraping sound. Cell phones were common, why did he need to ramp up the sound?
it'd be interesting to see a version of this movie that's cut to center only around jack nicholson's character, i think it might still work as a whole different movie.
There are good movies with memorable moments everyone knows even if they haven't seen the movie in its entirety. For example... My mom has never seen a single second of any star wars movie but if you say "Luke , I'm your father " She'd pick up on it immediately
Wasn’t the part of mr french given lines as Scorsese have lunch with ray winstone at the savoy and ray asked if he would write in a speaking part for him? Who could resist ray winstone…. Powerhouse of a film
The comment regarding the Nazi uniforms was not correct. Hugo Boss designed the Nazi uniforms they were not designed using Mass. state police uniforms.
I watch the original movie first, then I watch this movie without knowing this movie is the remake. Midway watching, I notice that I was watching the remake. But if I'm not mistaken, the ending is different. Guess I have to watch this 2 movies again
I think Departed seems original to the western audience due to the casts and directors. What a lot of people don't realise is Infernal Affairs is more original and a break through in the Hong Kong context as films around that time were too manufactured where both stories and cinematography are "lazy". Also The Departed has the original story changed Vs Infernal affairs where it has a prequel and a sequel (which was the 3rd installment). For me this is a "better" version of Old Boy by Spike, but definitely can't beat the original.

the movie sucks dick and so did someone to the academy board.
The music was great & made by: Scott Bollas.
I’m sure someone already corrected you @kolokinoclips, but the Hong Kong picture is titled “Infernal Affairs”, NOT “Internal”.
"Don't laugh! This ain't reality TV" is such a great line from Jack in this movie.
I find that line funny by jack Nicholson
What he said before that was just as funny.
I have watched the Departed over 100 times and still enjoy watching it again.
Me too lol never gets old.
The Hong Kong movie “Infernal Affairs” (not ‘internal’) was an amazing bit of cat and mouse filmmaking. I saw it about a year before “The Departed” was announced. This bugs me too.A lot of people get this wrong.Infernal affairs is a trilogy too.
The first thing I checked when I head “internal,” was to see if anybody else caught that. As said by @Adam J, this totally bothers me too.
Great post and so on point, i was the same as i watched the movie around a year before The Departed came out.
My favourite film, then Django Unchained, then Dead Man’s Shoes. I assume most have watched my top 2 but find a way of watching Dead Man’s Shoes as it’s great (although I am British)
100th like

Same. Might be my favorite film of all time
He definitely should have won an Oscar for Goodfellas!
Casino too
Possibly Marty’s best work. Finally won his Oscar for this one. Absolutely sensational cast, pace, writing, direction - unreal.
One of my top 5 movies, no question. So is Goodfellas and Gangs of New York is a solid honorable mention. Marty sure can tell a great story, providing he has a vat of fact to draw from.
Great movie, one of my favorites. I personally think Goodfellas is the best film Martin ever did, but that is just me.
The departed is excellent.
@࿘ COROA ࿗ a lot of people will insist Taxi Driver and Raging Bull are better then his other films. So many great ones to choose from.
For me, Goodfellas and The Aviator are Scorsese’s best work. Keeping in mind he doesn’t do anything bad …
I don’t want to be a product of my environment… I want my environment, to be a product of me.
One of the best opening scenes in all of cinema if you ask me.
Wahlberg, Damon and Dicaprio in one movie!!! The casting alone is amazing
And Nicholson. And Sheen. So many A listers.
This is undoubtedly one of my favorite movies hands down! The story is absolutely incredible! The ensemble cast are some of the greatest actors of my time and before my time. "And if you haven't seen this one yet?! " don't worry you've just saved everyone two hours by spoiling the whole story well done.

Anyone reading the comments on a movie review should expect spoilers!
@@mr.donovan7440 this channel doesn't really specify certain points throughout the movie more so all the behind the scene elements.
Jack is just immaculate in this movie
I worked as a Extra on the Departed ..was a lot of fun ..20:takes of walking by Martin Sheen on a street, I nearly ran into him in one of them!
Was it when he was headed to 344 Wash to meet Costigan?
@@caseylayton4898 must be I think ..it is right before he is thrown of the roof wearing a green jacket.

I thought Costigan was a sacraficial hero. He didn't have to do what he did, but he gave his life
Mark Wahlberg was amazing in this movie and was ignored thoroughly
BS.

Great video! I had never noticed the part about the X's signifying death but look forward to watching it again and can't unsee them now!
One of my favorite movies of all time. In a league with No Country for Old Men and The Wolf of Wall Street.
I gotta be honest, I do not understand the hype. The story is ridiculous. It's amazing how these things come together. It's also amazing how small Hollywood gets: you keep seeing the same actors over and over. Not complaining, because the movie is money. Not any of those involved best, but a good movie.
I need to watch this masterpiece again
It’s hard to believe that was Scorsese’s first Grammy.
I never noticed the "x" marking a character for death 😮

Ooh, that bit of Jack having real gun to surprise Leo and then going to how Alec Baldwin was cast really cuts sharper than the edit now.
Every person in this movie is on the top of their game, another masterpiece from the master film maker❤❤

I like how you used clips from the Entourage episode where Marty called Vince to star in his movie after having a career low
Nicholson ... option three? THREE? Jack #1, always. 🕶
Nicholson is an artist. Older I am the more I see it. And funny af.
Wahlberg turned down the role because he was pissed and wanted the lead role Dicaprio had. It’s nothing to do with basketball diaries.
This is by far your best video in my opinion... I liked your other works and I considered the Goodfellas one to be your best so far... however, this surpasses even that... great job... keep it up...
this was a true pleasure to watch, and it feels like my love for film is in good hands!! thanks a lot, keep it up
It blew my mind when it came out when I was in high school. I went and watched in the theatre two days in a row lol
😃
I say thank you to whoever turned down this movie. It was perfect
I never knew about the Xs. What a great detail

Mark’s a southie from boston theyre all racist 😂 not much acting there bud lmao
I think this is one of Scorsese’s most underrated films. It’s amazing.
@miketidbits2604 it was made last century.
Its not Martin Sheen. Its Ramon Estevez playing an irish guy.
I thought the original was Infernal affairs
BRU, you didn't even remark on the fact that the X markings in the film are a reference to the original Scarface movie with Paul Muni.
3:24 I actually heard from someone in the know in Hollywood that Nicholson's main condition was that his character MUST say the "n" word within the opening five minutes of the film.

Glad you enjoy it!
The Departed is one of my all time favourite movies great story cast and production
I watched this opening weekend. My face hurt so much from smiling.
Marks character is my favorite in the movie
Masterpiece. A cinematic gem
Please share stories like this.
DeCaprio is unbelievably over-rated.
In this movie he sucks
Arkin had it coming, but yeah.
Marty deserved the Oscar. ❤
I like how the dog didn’t like Matt Damon’s character.
It’s taken me forever to find a physical copy of this on blu ray. The thrift store came thru! $2

One of best Remake you can ever make
The only thing you have to know is that it’s a line for line remake of “Infernal Affairs”. Hollywood deserves almost no credit
It's like saying that no James Bond movie released after the first ones has any merit.

My favorite movie. Simply perfect
I've seen this film about 6 times in my life. I have the double DVD- The Departed and Goodfellas.
If Infernal Affairs was out in the 2020s, an easy Oscar won I would say.
Narrator says Internal in this vid
great video. subscribed
The three men who gave Marty his award are his most important contemporaries.
Wasn’t the part of mr french given lines as Scorsese have lunch with ray winstone at the savoy and ray asked if he would write in a speaking part for him? Who could resist ray winstone….
Powerhouse of a film
I love the background music

Amazing that an Actor would turn down a role in a Scorsese movie, what was Liotta thinking.
One of my favorite movies
The comment regarding the Nazi uniforms was not correct. Hugo Boss designed the Nazi uniforms they were not designed using Mass. state police uniforms.
Every line you used from the movie is sooo funny..
Anyone find it f’d that he cuts from “jack nicholson using a real pistol pointed at leos face to alec baldwin” lol
Love this. I’ve seen this film multiple times and didn’t pick up on many of these.

One of greatest movies ever with exceptional cast n acting

& the oscar goes to, the greatest film maker of them all, Martin "The One" Scorsese.
Its actually Infernal Affairs and not Internal Affairs that The Departed is a remake of.
Mark probably didnt like Leo because Leo can actually act. That said he did play a great Dignum.
I think Departed seems original to the western audience due to the casts and directors. Exactly bro
Best movies of all time:
Goodfellas

The Departed
Scorsese is the man
Truly amazing channel!
Such a good movie. The casting is top tier and acting is top tier.
Unpopular opinion maybe, but this is right up there with Goodfellas and Casino.
Probably my second favorite Scorsese film, after Casino
