  • The Millennium Tower may be the most recognizable sinking building in the city, but one researcher says earth-based and space-based observations confirm the entire downtown area around it is sinking as well. Jaxon Van Derbeken reports.

    People want to build SF like Manhattan, forgetting that Manhattan sits on granite while SF sits on silt, abandoned gold rush ships and fault lines.
    It should be built like Paris, which has hardly any skyscrapers bc it’s built on catacombs.
    Of course a huge part of the problem is a local government that, for 20 years has been totally complacent with wealthy international investors building massive vanity towers and empty investment properties.

    When I visited Berlin, I noted that there are no big skyscrapers because the city is built on what was originally a swamp. Much of SF is built on landfill. The "City Knows How" sure got it wrong when the city government allowed the construction of so many huge buildings.

    • @tvviewer4500
      @tvviewer4500 2 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      That is a lot of bull shit. Chicago is build on a swamp. In the past chicago architects made their own bedrock in a floating foundation made out of concrete and steel - those buildings were only a dozen stories high. The city has some of the tallest buildings ever - which were anchored to the bed rock hundreds of feet below the surface. In face the entire city is build on landfill and was raised 10-30 feet across the entire city - you can see the old houses in some places that were built at the original grade.
      The part of SF this building was built is naturally elevated.

    *And people should have listened. Back in the 1970s, San Franciscans opposed to the 'Manhattanization' of the Financial District area. However, Diana Fainstein and others heavily involved in the real estate business didn't listen. Most of the Embarcadero buildings area is landfill, much of the Marina is built on a former landfill, and is susceptible to soil liquefaction during strong earthquakes.*

      Many major cities have the same problem. Areas of Milwaukee are sinking due to being built on fill or unstable soil. If you live in an older building that is built near the coast you can tell if your building is sinking by how tight your doors close or if your door swings open by itself.

      Living in Fremont it became very obvious the sinking is accelerating. A telegraph pole opposite our 3 story high apts suddenly 'visually sank' beneath the peninsula skyline two years ago, almost three now. A new fissure opened under our complex going south east and running north west same time from the Hayward fault. Our building was tipping north east. Now heavily tilts south west. Two sinkholes growing from a couple of inches to at least a foot under the driveway on the east side of the property. The doors were tight fitting, now loose. The walls have heavy cracking. The patios buckling. $10 mill grant given to refurbish the place. When its a high tide? The drains don't work and the parking lot floods.speeding up. The city is built on more or less level, flat ground. But the higher the tides? The more the flooding occurs. Newark, Union City and Fremont all affected. No idea how to fix things. Watching in fascinated horror and praying nothing bad happens to any of us.

    The San Andreas is not “a fault”, it’s a fault zone. Other ruptures can occur parallel to the known fault lines anywhere in or near the fault zone. A building doesn’t have to be right on a known fault line to be affected, or collapse in an earthquake, the geological materials underlying it are more important than its immediate proximity to a fault. The downtown area is underlain by a hundred feet or more of very weak clays, fills and other materials above the bedrock, which continue to subside. All high rises in downtown should be required to have foundations seated in the bedrock, just look at the Millennium Tower fiasco. I hope it’s only a financial disaster in the end, not one which kills thousands of people.

    • @LukeL007
      @LukeL007 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It might be normal and inconsequential for small structures, however for a 50+ story building it is a different situation. Remember the crust compared to the rest of the earth represents around 1.67% if its total volume. So a slight change in the mantle under certain areas (the mantle is also moving continuosly ) could cause dramatic changes to the surface.
      We have only been making super tall structures for around 100 years (things like the pyramids are solid stone and wouldn't be effect by any sinkage) and have only been studying the earth in depth for around the same time.

During these turbulent times there is still hope in the middle of the fear. There are good news, God promises to be with you because he loves you.
